James McBride Interview: That's the America I Live In

“When you glorify violence, then it comes back to bite you.” In this short video, writer James McBride reflects on the riots in the city of Ferguson and America’s refusal to take a long critical look at itself.
There’s a class war going on in America, and blacks are still involved in a large part of that, as “the majority of blacks still have not enjoyed the fruits of great commercial or life success”, says James McBride. Even though the situation is not as bad as it was thirty years ago, it’s still a problem: “Every once in a while it rubs in a way that is very embarrassing for us as Americans.”
Observing the tense situation in the city of Ferguson, where massive protests arose when an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer, who was subsequently not indicted, McBride claims that you can’t simply blame the police: “It’s not really a police problem – its’ a society problem”, he argues. “Beneath the uniform, there’s a man, who wants to go home to his wife and children”, he continues, commenting on what happens when you put a lot of poor people in one place and then tell the police to take care of them. According to James McBride, you need to turn the mirror and look at America’s idea of policing, with cops who are heavily armed, and the general accessibility of firearms: “This is what happens, when you allow guns to be rampant.”
James McBride (b. 1957) is an American writer and musician. His bestselling book ‘The Color of Water’ (1995) was on The New York Times’ Bestseller List for more than two years and has since become an American classic. McBride’s novel ‘The Good Lord Bird’, was the winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Fiction.

An accomplished musician as well as the author of the classic memoir The Color of Water and the National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird, McBride infuses every word of his eagerly awaited new novel—the first in seven years—with his signature rhythmic prose, dynamic storytelling, and sheer passion. Set in Brooklyn in 1969, the narrative leaps into action with Sportcoat, a Baptist preacher, shooting Deems, a young drug dealer, in the courtyard of the Case House project. As news of the killing spreads, the community’s residents tell stories of their own experiences of racism and the rising scourge of drugs and fill in the details explaining how Deems and Sportcoat came to their dramatic showdown.

James McBride, "Kill 'em and Leave"
A writer and composer, McBride has enjoyed a varied career that includes the best-selling memoir, The Color of Water, the National Book Award-winning novel, The Good Lord Bird, and the American Music Theater Festival’s Stephen Sondheim Award-winning jazz/pop musical, Bobos. Combining his literary skills and musical interests, McBride traces the life of the legendary James Brown (1933 – 2006), separating myth from truth, and celebrating the remarkable achievements and legacy of the Godfather of Soul from his start in Gospel through his 1960s peak with Live at the Apollo and on to his title as the most sampled artist some six decades later.

In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and in front of everybody shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range.
The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird. In Deacon King Kong, McBride brings to vivid life the people affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local cops assigned to investigate, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church where Sportcoat was deacon, the neighborhood's Italian mobsters, and Sportcoat himself.
As the story deepens, it becomes clear that the lives of the characters - caught in the tumultuous swirl of 1960s New York - overlap in unexpected ways. When the truth does emerge, McBride shows us that not all secrets are meant to be hidden, that the best way to grow is to face change without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in hope and compassion.
Bringing both his masterly storytelling skills and his abiding faith in humanity, James McBride has written a novel every bit as involving as The Good Lord Bird and as emotionally honest as The Color of Water. Told with insight and wit, Deacon King Kong demonstrates that love and faith live in all of us.

Many people these days are looking for free audiobooks on youtube. and rightfully so, because there are a lot of full length audiobooks on youtube available.
but still, many people dont know how to find audiobooks on youtube. So I made this video to clarify once and for all the best way to get audiobooks on youtube (full versions).
Now of course, not every audiobook is available on youtube. but there are a lot of public domain audiobooks that you can listen to. For these, I recommend specifically the following three audiobook channels on youtube:
Greatest audiobooks: https://www.youtube.com/user/GreatestAudioBooks
Audio books: https://www.youtube.com/user/rt20bg
Librivox: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsHiFXTYJrc6ZKK_HJMX6jA
As I describe in the video, there are also audiobooks on youtube that are not public domain and there are ways how you can find those.
I hope with this video I can encourage you to listen to more free audiobooks, as it is a great way to learn and broaden your horizon.

The Good Lord Bird (Audiobook) by James McBride Reviews:
Publisher's Summary
National Book Award, Fiction, 2013 From the best-selling author of The Color of Water and Song Yet Sung comes the story of a young boy born a slave who joins John Brown’s antislavery crusade - and who must pass as a girl to survive. Henry Shackleford is a young slave living in the Kansas Territory in 1857, when the region is a battleground between anti- and pro-slavery forces. When John Brown, the legendary abolitionist, arrives in the area, an argument between Brown and Henry’s master quickly turns violent. Henry is forced to leave town - with Brown, who believes he’s a girl. Over the ensuing months, Henry - whom Brown nicknames Little Onion - conceals his true identity as he struggles to stay alive. Eventually Little Onion finds himself with Brown at the historic raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859 - one of the great catalysts for the Civil War. An absorbing mixture of history and imagination, and told with McBride’s meticulous eye for detail and character, The Good Lord Bird is both a rousing adventure and a moving exploration of identity and survival.

The Color of Water by James McBride
9781594481925 | $16.00 | Trade Paperback
From the New York Times bestselling author of Deacon King Kong and The Good Lord Bird, winner of the National Book Award for Fiction:
The modern classic that Oprah.com calls one of the best memoirs of a generation and that launched James McBride’s literary career.
More than two years on The New York Times bestseller list.
Who is Ruth McBride Jordan? A self-declared “light-skinned” woman evasive about her ethnicity, yet steadfast in her love for her twelve black children. James McBride, journalist, musician, and son, explores his mother’s past, as well as his own upbringing and heritage, in a poignant and powerful debut, The Color Of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother.
The son of a black minister and a woman who would not admit she was white, James McBride grew up in “orchestrated chaos” with his eleven siblings in the poor, all-black projects of Red Hook, Brooklyn. “Mommy,” a fiercely protective woman with “dark eyes full of pep and fire,” herded her brood to Manhattan’s free cultural events, sent them off on buses to the best (and mainly Jewish) schools, demanded good grades, and commanded respect. As a young man, McBride saw his mother as a source of embarrassment, worry, and confusion—and reached thirty before he began to discover the truth about her early life and long-buried pain.
In The Color of Water, McBride retraces his mother’s footsteps and, through her searing and spirited voice, recreates her remarkable story. The daughter of a failed itinerant Orthodox rabbi, she was born Rachel Shilsky (actually Ruchel Dwara Zylska) in Poland on April 1, 1921. Fleeing pogroms, her family emigrated to America and ultimately settled in Suffolk, Virginia, a small town where anti-Semitism and racial tensions ran high. With candor and immediacy, Ruth describes her parents’ loveless marriage; her fragile, handicapped mother; her cruel, sexually-abusive father; and the rest of the family and life she abandoned.
At seventeen, after fleeing Virginia and settling in New York City, Ruth married a black minister and founded the all- black New Brown Memorial Baptist Church in her Red Hook living room. “God is the color of water,” Ruth McBride taught her children, firmly convinced that life’s blessings and life’s values transcend race. Twice widowed, and continually confronting overwhelming adversity and racism, Ruth’s determination, drive and discipline saw her dozen children through college—and most through graduate school. At age 65, she herself received a degree in social work from Temple University.
Interspersed throughout his mother’s compelling narrative, McBride shares candid recollections of his own experiences as a mixed-race child of poverty, his flirtations with drugs and violence, and his eventual self- realization and professional success. The Color of Water touches readers of all colors as a vivid portrait of growing up, a haunting meditation on race and identity, and a lyrical valentine to a mother from her son.
