Dangerous Corner - J.B. Priestly - BBC Saturday Night Theatre
Dangerous Corner was the first play by the English writer J. B. Priestley. It was premiered in May 1932 by Tyrone Guthrie at the Lyric Theatre, London, and filmed in 1934 by Phil Rosen.
Priestley had recently collaborated with Edward Knoblock on the dramatisation of The Good Companions and now wished "to prove that a man might produce long novels and yet be able to write effectively, using the strictest economy, for the stage." While it was praised highly by James Agate, Dangerous Corner received extremely poor reviews and after three days he was told that the play would be taken off, a fate that he averted by buying out the syndicate. It then ran for six months. Priestley's action was further vindicated by the worldwide success the play was to enjoy, although he soon lowered his estima...

Robert and Freda Caplan are entertaining guests at their country retreat. A chance remark by one of the guests ignites a series of devastating revelations, revealing a hitherto undiscovered tangle of clandestine relationships and dark secrets, the disclosures of which have tragic consequences.

Jan Francis leads a lively cast in Beiderbecke writer Alan Plater's definitive adaptation of J.B. Priestley's celebrated novel. Charting the rollercoaster fortunes of a struggling concert party, Francis co-stars alongside Bryan Pringle, John Stratton and Moody and Pegg's Judy Cornwell, with guest appearances by Roy Kinnear, Denis Lawson and Nigel Hawthorne. Priestley's defining work -- and one which established him as a national figure -- The Good Companions has been a mainstay of English literature since its initial publication in 1929.
Jess Oakroyd, discontented with his home, his work and his football team, tears up his Insurance Card and disappears into the night. He intends to go to Nuneaton, but instead finds himself on the ragged edges of show business. We share with him the trials and tribulations of the Good Companions as they tour seaside towns, industrial cities and rural backwaters in their search for success and stardom.

Robert and Freda Caplan are entertaining guests at their country retreat. A chance remark by one of the guests ignites a series of devastating revelations, revealing a hitherto undiscovered tangle of clandestine relationships and dark secrets, the disclosures of which have tragic consequences. The play ends with time slipping back to the beginning of the evening and the chance remark not being made, the secrets remaining hidden and the "dangerous corner" avoided.

Seguirono, tra gli altri, Angel Pavement (La via dell’angelo, 1930), The Magicians (I maghi, 1954), Saturn over the water (Saturno sopra le acque, 1961), e altri.

J B Priestley: A Soldier's Cause
J B Priestley was an author, playwright, broadcaster and social commentator. Best known for his plays such as 'An Inspector Calls' and his postscript radio broadcasts during the Second World War, his work commonly explored social and economic inequality.
In this short film, Dr Will Butler, Head of Military Records at The National Archives, uses Priestley’s service record to highlight how his experiences on the battlefield during the First World War shaped his ideas on social reform.
'Literary Lives' traces the footsteps, through the marks they left in our records, of some of our nation’s famous, and less famous, authors, spotlighting moments in their lives that have shaped them into the characters we know them to be today.

THE OLD DARK HOUSE (4K Restoration) New & Exclusive Theatrical Trailer
Frankenstein director Whale turned J.B. Priestley’s novel Benighted into a nerve-jangling tale that became the template for all spooky-house chillers to come. This atmospheric thriller features an unforgettable post-Frankenstein horror role for Boris Karloff, as the hulking, disfigured butler Morgan. Also starring in early-career roles are Melvin Douglas, Charles Laughton, Raymond Massey and Gloria Stuart of Titanic.
