The fortress was intended to reaffirm Russia's right to access the sea and at the same time form a bulwark against the Teutonic Order, which dominated the Baltics. On the left bank stands since the 13th Century the powerful Hermann Castle, a castle of the Teutonic Order. In the following decades, the structures of the fort have been expanded and strengthened. After the collapse of the German order of Estonia came under Swedish rule, and since the end of the Livonian War in 1583 the Ivangorod fortress also belonged to Sweden.
History
The original castle was constructed in one summer, in the year 1492. It was named after Moscovian Grand Prince Ivan III. Its purpose was to fend off the Livonian Knights. The castle is strictly quadrilateral, measuring 1,600sqft (150m2), with walls 14 meters tall.
Ivangorod is a major border crossing point and a railway station by the Tallinn–St.Petersburg line. It is located just opposite to the Estonian town of Narva.
The town is the site of the Ivangorod Fortress, a prominent fortification monument of the 15th and the 16th centuries.
History
The fortress was established in 1492 during the reign of IvanIII of Moscow and was named after him. Between 1581–1590 and between 1612–1704, it was controlled by Sweden. Ivangorod was granted town privileges and administered as a Russian township under the Crown of Sweden (who conquered it in 1612 from boyar Teuvo Aminev) until 1649, when its burghers were ordered to remove to a Narva suburb. In 1617, the Treaty of Stolbovo was signed between Russia and Sweden, which placed the area under the Swedish sovereignty. Russia reconquered it during the Great Northern War in 1704. Despite other changes in territory and sovereignty, Ivangorod was considered an administrative part of the town of Narva from 1649 until 1945. In 1780, Ivangorod, together with Narva, was included into Narvsky Uyezd of St.Petersburg Governorate. In 1796, Narvsky Uyezd was abolished and merged into Yamburgsky Uyezd.
After 8 hours of questioning from FSB I managed to enter the Russian side and city of Ivangorod explore this GEM of a castle with me on this short video.

The most awkward Victory Day parade on Estonian border
9 May 23 Residents of Narva, Estonia, came to the border to watch a concert in honor of May 9, which was organized for them in Ivangorod.
At the walls of the fortress and on the bank of the river the Russian side installed large screens, which show images of the war years and include songs of Victory.
Thousands would gather in Narva each year on May 9, when many European countries celebrate Victory Day to mark the end of World War Two, but the events were banned after Russia invaded Ukraine last year, and Soviet war monuments were removed from the town.
Also, despite the ban by the authorities, since the morning Estonians carried flowers to the monuments dedicated to the heroism of the Red Army.

The castle was reconstructed and fortified many times, becoming one of the strongest defensive structures in the 16th century. The castle was in development until the 17th century, becoming a large, sprawling fortress with several lines of defence.
In 1612, the Swedes conquered the fortress. In 1704, Peter the Great captured the castle from Swedish troops, bringing the fortress back into Russian control. After the early 18th century, the military role of the fortress became obsolete due to improvements in warfare.
In 1840, some improvements were carried out in the fortress (roofs were renewed), and further improvements took place in 1863 and 1911-1914. During World War I, the fortress was captured by the Germans on 25 February 1918.
