John W. Campbell (1962) - Interview by Fred Lerner
John W. Campbell and his views on science fiction are showcased in this intriguing audio interview (presented with illustrative pictures) from 1962. Fred Lerner, noted librarian, bibliographer and historian, was just 16 when he interviewed John W. Campbell, the man that shaped much of science fiction for decades. Campbell was both a successful author and the long time editor of Astounding Science Fiction (later Analog). Topics discussed include Rudyard Kipling as a science fiction writer, the government's interest in Cleve Cartmill's fiction, and the nature and value of science fiction. If you like Golden Age science fiction, this is an opportunity to hear one of the giants of the field in his own voice. Thanks to Fred Lerner for providing the recording. John W. Campbell is often credited as the one to kickoff the Golden Age of Science Fiction with the pulp fictiion magazine, Astounding Stories of Super Science. First published in 1930, Campbell would take over as aditor and contributor in 1937. Astounding Stories would see some of the most well known names in science ficton, such as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Invaders from the Infinite - John W. Campbell
Invaders from the Infinite by John W. Campbell
The alien spaceship was unthinkably huge, enormously powerful, apparently irresistable. It came from the void and settled on Earth, striking awe into the hearts of those who saw it. Its burden, however, was not conquest - but a call for help.
First contact was a job for the brilliant team of scientists, Arcot, Wade and Morey, explorers of the Islands of Space. And what they learned was an offer of an alliance against an invading foe so powerful that no known force could turn them back.
John W. Campbell's Invaders from the Infinite is a veritable odyssey of the Universe spanning across 3 novellas. It continues to stand as a defining Science Fiction epic in which new worlds are explored, new beings discovered, and Cosmic secrets revealed.

#11 - John W. Campbell and the Golden Age of Sci-Fi
John W. Campbell was the controversial longtime editor of Astounding Science Fiction who single-handedly directed the course of science fiction in the 1940s, a time that is not called the "golden age of sci-fi." However, I argue the golden age continued through the 1950s as writers who got their start under Campbell began publishing on their own.

Islands of Space - John W Campbell - Science Fiction Audiobook
'John Campbell’s book was written as a sequel to ‘The Black Star Passes… and believe me, it was a world-beater in those days.
‘Arcot, Wade, Morey and their computer, Fuller, put together a ship which will travel faster than light… they give us what may have been the first space-warp drive. The concept was simple; to make it plausible wasn’t – unless you were John Campbell.
‘With this out-of-space drive they hightail it among the stars. They locate the fugitive planets of the Black Star… find a frozen cemetery-world of a lost race… then head out for another galaxy… and wind up in a knock-down-drag-out interplanetary war in the other galaxy.’

The Ultimate Weapon by John W. Campbell. librivox, literature, audiobook, adventure, fantasy, fiction, science fiction. The star Mira was unpredictably variable. Sometimes it was blazing, brilliant and hot. Other times it was oddly dim, cool, shedding little warmth on its many planets. Gresth Gkae, leader of the Mirans, was seeking a better star, one to which his "people" could migrate. That star had to be steady, reliable, with a good planetary system. And in his astronomical searching, he found Sol.
With hundreds of ships, each larger than whole Terrestrial spaceports, and traveling faster than the speed of light, the Mirans set out to move in to Solar regions and take over.
And on Earth there was nothing which would be capable of beating off this incredible armada—until Buck Kendall stumbled upon THE ULTIMATE WEAPON.

Morey worked a moment with his slide rule, then said, "We made good time! Twenty-nine light years in ten seconds! Yet you had it on at only half power...." Arcot pushed the control lever all the way to full power. The ship filled with the strain of flowing energy, and sparks snapped in the air of the control room as they raced at an inconceivable speed through the darkness of intergalactic space. But suddenly, far off to their left and far to their right, they saw two shining ships paralleling their course! They held grimly to the course of the Earth ship, bracketing it like an official guard. The Earth scientists stared at them in wonder. "Lord," muttered Morey, "where can they have come from?"

John W. Campbell
John Wood Campbell Jr. (June 8, 1910 – July 11, 1971) was an American science fiction writer and editor. He was editor of "Astounding Science Fiction" (later called "Analog Science Fiction and Fact") from late 1937 until his death and was part of the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Campbell wrote super-science space opera under his own name and stories under his primary pseudonym, Don A. Stuart. Campbell also used the pen names Karl Van Kampen and Arthur McCann. His novella ""Who Goes There?"" was adapted as the films "The Thing from Another World" (1951), "The Thing" (1982), and "The Thing" (2011).
Campbell began writing science fiction at age 18 while attending MIT. He published six short stories, one novel, and six letters in the science fiction magazine "Amazing Stories" from 1930 to 1931. This work established Campbell's reputation as a writer of space adventure. When in 1934 he began to write stories with a different tone, he wrote as Don A. Stuart. From 1930 until the later part of that decade, Campbell was prolific and successful under both names, though he stopped writing fiction shortly after he became editor of "Astounding" in 1937.
It is as editor of "Astounding Science Fiction" (later called "Analog Science Fiction and Fact") from late 1937 until his death for which Campbell is primarily remembered today. As well, in 1939, Campbell started the fantasy magazine "Unknown," although it was canceled after only four years. Referring to his time spent as an editor, The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction wrote: "More than any other individual, he helped to shape modern sf." Isaac Asimov called Campbell "the most powerful force in science fiction ever" and said the "first ten years of his editorship he dominated the field completely." In his capacity as an editor, Campbell published some of the very earliest work, and helped shape the careers, of virtually e...
