The surge was developed under the working title "The New Way Forward" and was announced in January 2007 by Bush during a television speech. Bush ordered the deployment of more than 20,000 soldiers into Iraq (five additional brigades), and sent the majority of them into Baghdad. He also extended the tour of most of the Army troops in country and some of the Marines already in the Anbar Province area. The President described the overall objective as establishing a "...unified, democratic federal Iraq that can govern itself, defend itself, and sustain itself, and is an ally in the War on Terror." The major element of the strategy was a change in focus for the US military "to help Iraqis clear and secure neighborhoods, to help them protect the local population, and to help ensure that the Iraqi forces left behind are capable of providing the security". The President stated that the surge would then provide the time and conditions conducive to reconciliation between communities.
The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or Mandatory Iraq (Arabic:الانتداب البريطاني على العراقal-Intidāb al-Brīṭānī ‘Alá al-‘Irāq) was created in 1921 following the 1920 Iraqi Revolt against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia, and enacted via the 1922 Anglo-Iraqi Treaty.
Faisal ibn Husayn, who had been proclaimed King of Syria by a Syrian National Congress in Damascus in March 1920, was ejected by the French in July of the same year. Faisal was then granted by the British the territory of Iraq, to rule it as a kingdom, with the British Royal Air Force (RAF) retaining certain military control, though de facto; the territory remained under British administration until 1932.
The civil government of postwar Iraq was headed originally by the High Commissioner, Sir Percy Cox, and his deputy, ColonelArnold Wilson. British reprisals after the murder of a British officer in Najaf failed to restore order. The most striking problem facing the British was the growing anger of the nationalists, who continued to fight against the imposition of British authority. British administration had yet to be established in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The indigenous Sumerians and Akkadians (including Assyrians and Babylonians) dominated Mesopotamia from the beginning of written history (c. 3100 BC) to the fall of Babylon in 539 BC, when it was conquered by the Achaemenid Empire. It fell to Alexander the Great in 332 BC, and after his death, it became part of the Greek Seleucid Empire.
Iraq war remembered: inside the surge with US troops
This report was first broadcast on 12 July 2007
It is the experience of the US troops which is turning American opinion against the conflict in Iraq.
Channel 4 News gained an unprecedented insight into the dangers they face each day.
Guardian photographer Sean Smith spent two months with US troops, following soldiers taking part in the surge and trying to contain the insurgency.
The US administration claim the extra troops have brought some stability to Baghdad, but the city remains divided between Sunni and Shia communities. As a cameraman and stills photographer, his is an impressionistic view of war.

"If he goes to a different part of the neighbourhood, I'll arrest him." The 50°C heat is taking its toll on the soldiers. One starts throwing up from heat exhaustion and two others are given a drip of saline solution. "The heat's pretty crazy. Sometimes you just can't drink enough." All the men have had their tours of duty extended by at least three months. They're exhausted and being stretched to their limits.

Looking back at 2007, progress was made in Iraq -- but it came with a heavy price tag.
A U-S troop surge into insurgent strongholds helped violence drop dramatically in the second half of the year ---
But it also threw soldiers into the most dangerous neighborhoods --- resulting in 899 U-S troops being killed -- making 2007 the deadliest year for the military since the invasion began almost five years ago.
And with the surge now being pulled back, the military hopes the gains in security will not go in vain ---

At least 12 people were killed in the attack

Iraq Slams U.S. and Israel for Using Its Airspace to Launch Attacks on Iran, ‘Do Not Exploit…’
Iraq has strongly condemned the use of its airspace by the U.S. and Israel for launching attacks on Iran, calling it a violation of its sovereignty. The country’s National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, reiterated Iraq’s firm stance against the exploitation of its territory for military actions against any neighbouring nation. This follows allegations that Israel used U.S.-controlled airspace over Iraq to conduct airstrikes on Iranian military sites. Iraq has submitted formal protests to the United Nations, demanding accountability for the breach of its airspace and emphasising its commitment to maintaining neutrality and regional peace.

Hi friends, it would mean the world if you supported our ability to keep making videos like this one and our fundraising efforts here through Seek Discomfort's new drop live now:
🌎 For US & Worldwide (minus Europe): https://www.seekdiscomfort.com/
🌍 For Europe: https://eu.seekdiscomfort.com/
Thanks to our fantastic guide and friend Aya Salih @aya__0_0/@safraty__ for making that trip so memorable. Don't hesitate to reach out to her if you ever want to travel to Baghdad.
Then just a note from Thomas here, I am super grateful and humbled to have the ability to create and share stories like this one. I know this isn’t the most algorithm-optimized, easy to consume, but I do feel that we need more stories like this more than the mindless YouTube challenge content. So I do hope it resonates with you and that it can, as I say in the video, build a bridge or plant a seed for empathy within us. I appreciate any and all of your support whatever it looks like from liking, commenting or buying some Seek, all of it goes a lot further than you can imagine. Much love to you all, see you on the next one.

How Iraq Became Iraq: the British Mandate after World War I
British Mandate in Iraq after World War I: Mandatory Iraq was a period where the country was owned by Britain. They installed their own government and their own monarchy to hide behind, but they were the ones pulling the strings. They maintained order with brutal bombings from the Royal Air Force so that they could keep the oil flowing for as long as possible.

Mandatory Iraq
The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or Mandatory Iraq was created in 1921 following the 1920 Iraqi Revolt against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia, and enacted via the 1922 Anglo-Iraqi Treaty.
Faisal ibn Husayn, who had been proclaimed King of Syria by a Syrian National Congress in Damascus in March 1920, was ejected by the French in July of the same year. Faisal was then granted by the British the territory of Iraq, to rule it as a kingdom, with the British Royal Air Force retaining certain military control, though de facto; the territory remained under British administration until 1932.

PH Labor Chief: There may be no need for mandatory repatriation in Iran, Lebanon | Headstart
No more mandatory repatriation for Filipinos in Iran and Lebanon. Philippine Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello says the initial alert level 4 raised in Iran has been removed, while Lebanon's has been downgraded to alert level 2 based on unofficial advice. But the alert level 4 in Iraq stays, meaning mandatory repatriation and evacuation continues.

Iraq's Death Valley: This September 2007 report from SBS Dateline follows American soldiers in their attempts to find insurgents in Diyala, and the difficulties they face every day.

"We're gonna kill the people that need to be killed and be frickin' decent to the rest of them," states Sgt. Maj. Edgar. "There's no in between." The plan is simple. Airborne troops go in at midnight, followed by a heavily armed convoy. But the roads are littered with IEDs and progress is painfully slow. It takes 15 hours to travel 30 km. The soldiers arrive exhausted but there's no time for rest. "We know the insurgents are here." They search every house, checking residents against a blacklist of known insurgents. Then they mark villagers' hands with their house numbers. "He cannot wash it off and needs to stay around this house for the next 24 hours," orders one soldier.

Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Lawrence Korb discusses a recent report that the "surge" in troop levels in Iraq has been underestimated by not accounting for the support personnel necessary for an increase in combat troops with MSNBC's Keith Olbermann. 2/1/07
