The Intertidal Zone — A Visual Journey (Coastal Marine Life of Singapore 2022)
Awhile back I was commissioned to do 4 videos for The Untamed Paths to promote their guided nature tours. I decided to re-cut the footage into these visual journeys, not narrative driven, but centered around a general theme. This is the third of this series—on the incredible & alien intertidal zone, (the area where the ocean meets the land), which comes alive when the tides recede. I hope you enjoy! If you do please share this video with your friends! It helps Touching Tails grow so I can produce more videos in the future.
If you have any questions on the animals featured, please comment with the timestamp and ask away! I will do my best to answer your questions and if I can't, I'll consult friends who are more knowledgeable in the field and get back to you. The whole point of Touching Ta...

The tides are generated by the gravitational forces between the moon, the sun, and Earth. The Intertidal zone is the coastal area between the high tide mark and the low tide mark. Not a huge area maybe, but for the organisms that live here, it means putting up with some serious physical and biological stresses. Have a look!

The Intertidal | UnderH2O | PBS Digital Studios
One of the most difficult habitats for any organism to inhabit is the intertidal. Wave energy, temperature fluctuations, and salinity changes make living here impossible for all but a few of the hardiest plants and animals. In the 4th episode of our series UnderH2O, we sneak into this mostly unexplored habitat during the short window of time when the tide is out and the tidepools are accessible.
Please subscribe to our series, and join our team of cameramen as they give a behind-the-scenes look at underwater film making and show how they go about capturing images of some nature's most exciting underwater events, creatures, and locations.

Camouflage in the Rockpools: How to Hide in a Variable World
Dr Sam Green
07 Aug 2023
For many animals camouflage is a matter of life or death. Successful concealment hinges on a close association between an animal’s appearance and the visual aspects of its surroundings. However, patches of microhabitat in nature are highly variable in terms of colour, shape, and texture. Furthermore, animals may need to move through multiple patches when seeking resources (e.g., food or mating opportunities) or the habitat itself may change around them (e.g., seasons or tidal cycles). This talk will explore the strategies by which animals attempt to maximise camouflage in space and time in order to remain hidden in such a visually variable world with a focus on behaviours, colour change, and transparency in the chameleon prawn (Hippolyte varians). Additionally, Sam will cover some more recent work looking at how anthropogenic changes to the natural world, such as pollution, may impact animal camouflage.
