Dayanand Saraswatipronunciation born (12 February 1824 – 30 October 1883) was a Hindu religious leader who founded the Arya Samaj, a Hindu reform movement of the Vedic tradition. He was a profound scholar of the Vedic lore and Sanskrit language. He was the first to give the call for Swarajya as "India for Indians" – in 1876, later taken up by Lokmanya Tilak. Denouncing the idolatry and ritualistic worship prevalent in Hinduism at the time, he worked towards reviving Vedic ideologies. Subsequently the philosopher and President of India, S. Radhakrishnan, called him one of the "makers of Modern India," as did Sri Aurobindo.

Logically, the Self is pure awareness which transcends all of the objects of perception. Swami Dayananda is a member of the Order of Sanyasins, or spiritual renunciates. He suggests that we often confuse this true self, which is awareness itself, with the objects of awareness--such as our own body. The path of Vedanta is one of brining this realization into a state of continuous clarity.

Passados quase três anos do falecimento de Shri Swami Dayananda, a dimensão da sua contribuição ao mundo ainda não foi apropriadamente medida, pois só a distância do tempo e da história poderá nos fornecer a correta perspectiva. Contudo, para os que foram seus alunos (direta ou indiretamente) e, graças a ele, encontraram nas suas vidas a medida do infinito, a grandeza do Swamiji não se mede com a régua ilusória do tempo, mas com a plenitude que vive em seus corações para sempre. É este o maior legado de Shri Swami Dayananda Sarasvati.
