The India and Pakistan Border, known locally as the International Border (IB), is an international border running between India and Pakistan that demarcates the Indian states and the four provinces of Pakistan. The border runs from the Line of Control (LoC), which separates the Indian controlled Kashmir from Pakistan controlled Kashmir, in the north, to Wagah, which partitioned the Indian Punjab state and Punjab Province of Pakistan, in the east. The Zero Point separates the Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan to Sindh province of Pakistan, in the south.
Drafted and created based upon the Radcliffe line in 1947, the border, which separates Pakistan and India from each other, traverses a variety of terrains ranging from major urban areas to inhospitable deserts. From the Arabian sea, the naval border follows the course of Manora Island of Pakistan to the course of the Mumbai Harbour, in the South east. Since independence of India and Pakistan, the border has been a site of numerous conflicts and wars between each country, and is one of the most complex borders in the world. The border's total length is 1,800mi (2,900km), according to the figures given by the PBS; it is also one of the most dangerous borders in the world, based on an article written in the Foreign Policy in 2011. It can be seen from space at night due to the 150,000 flood lights installed by India on about 50 thousand poles.
Guards at India-Pakistan Border Perform Independence Day Ceremony
Pakistan and India border guards take part in a daily ceremony at the Wagah border post as Pakistan celebrates the 75th anniversary of its independence, August 14, 2022.
Crowds go wild and soldiers goose-step in a chest-puffing theatrical ritual symbolizing the countries' antipathy after independence, but the display ends with a brisk, brotherly handshake.
Several hours before the ceremony, enthusiastic spectators begin trickling into sitting areas on either side of chunky iron gates separating the nuclear-armed Asian rivals at the Attari-Wagah frontier.
India and Pakistan, which celebrate 75 years of independence from Britain next week, share deep cultural and linguistic links but their history has been mired in violence and bloodshed.

INDIA VS. PAKISTAN FACE-OFF AT WAGAH/ATTARI BORDER CEREMONY (WITH COMMENTARY)! (4K)
The Wagah/Attari Border Ceremony at the India-Pakistan border, which has occurred here since 1959, is the most unique and surreal changing of the guard/flag lowering ceremony in the world. Why? Because India and Pakistan are basically enemies and have fought three wars against each other since 1947 and even today, they are technically still at war over the disputed territory of Kashmir. Furthermore, soldiers from each side come within inches of crossing each other's border, as they continually taunt and try to outdo each other with high-stepping, chest puffing, arm waving, and clenched fists. What makes this ceremony even more unique is the festive pre-ceremony; I felt like I was at an American football game instead of being at a tense border ceremony. In fact, the pre-ceremony is just as ...

In fact, the pre-ceremony is just as fascinating as the ceremony itself. Despite the rivalry, it was a display of pageantry, respect, and cooperation, which gives me hope for the future of Indian-Pakistani relations!

The British tasked Cyril Radcliffe with the job of drawing a line to separate Punjab and Bengal provinces from India into East and West Pakistan. Muslims and Hindus weren’t the only ones being separated from each other. Sikhs and people from other faiths were affected as well.
A Sikh pilgrimage was divided because of the new border, Punjabi people of all faiths were separated from each other, and a culture was ultimately divided.
This Vox Borders episode looks at how the Radcliffe line changed Punjab and how communities are affected now.
