Raphael Homer "Ray" Bryant (December 24, 1931 – June 2, 2011) was an American jazz pianist and composer.
Early life
Born in Philadelphia, Ray Bryant began playing the piano at the age of six, also performing on bass in junior high school. He turned professional before his age of majority. Bryant's brothers were the bass player Tommy Bryant (May 21, 1930 – March 1, 1982) and Len Bryant, who plays drums and is also a singer.
Later life and career
In 1948-49 Bryant toured with guitarist Tiny Grimes. He was house pianist at the Blue Note club in Philadelphia from 1953 to 1956, accompanying many other leading players such as Lester Young, Jo Jones, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Sonny Stitt. He also played with Sonny Rollins, Melba Liston, and Coleman Hawkins, as well as singers Carmen McRae and Aretha Franklin. Bryant later resided in Detroit, Michigan. From the late 1950s, he led a trio, performing throughout the world, and also worked solo. He toured Europe regularly after appearing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973. In addition, he was a noted jazz composer, with well-known themes such as "Cubano Chant", "The Madison Time", "Monkey Business", and "Little Susie" to his credit.
"If You Go Away" is an adaptation of the 1959 Jacques Brel song "Ne me quitte pas" with English lyrics by Rod McKuen. Created as part of a larger project to translate Brel's work, "If You Go Away" is considered a pop standard and has been recorded by many artists, including Greta Keller, for whom some say McKuen wrote the lyrics.
The complex melody is partly derivative of classical music - the poignant "But if you stay..." passage comes from Franz Liszt'sHungarian Rhapsody No. 6.
Lyrics
A sad but hopeful song, the lyrics are told from the perspective of someone telling their lover how much they'd be missed if they left. This is described in vivid, hyperbolic terms, such as "there'll be nothing left in the world to trust". If the lover stays, the narrator promises them both devotion and good times ("I'll make you a day / Like no day has been, or will be again"). Some lines show that the narrator is speaking to the lover as they are already leaving, or considering doing so ("Can I tell you now, as you turn to go..."). The lines "If you go, as I know you will" and later "...as I know you must" make clear that despite the narrator's protests, the lover's leaving is inevitable.
"If You Go Away" is a song by pop group New Kids on the Block (although the group was credited under the moniker of NKOTB on the jacket.) Released as a stand-alone single on December 14, 1991; it was later included on their 1994 album Face the Music. Written by John Bettis, Trey Lorenz and Walter Afanasieff, the latter of whom also served as the songs producer. Lead vocals are shared by Jordan Knight and Joey McIntyre, with a spoken word by Danny Wood. It was, at that point, the first song the group put out after having split with longtime manager and producer Maurice Starr.
Reception
The song returned the group to the US top twenty, peaking at number sixteen on the Billboard Hot 100 and number nine on the UK Singles Chart, and was a commercial rebound for the group after having seen its three previous songs all fail to reach the top forty. The group performed the song on The Arsenio Hall Show, while addressing an alleged lip-synching controversy. The single was the group's last hit until the release of the top 40 hit "Summertime" in 2008, and to date remains its final top twenty entry.

If you go away on this summer day then you might as well take the sun away All the birds that flew in the summer sky When our love was new and our hearts were high When the day was young and the nights were long And the moon stood still for the night bird's song If you go away if you go away if you go away But if you'll stay I'll make you a day like no day has been or will be again We'll sail the sun we'll glide on the rain we'll talk to the trees and worship the wind Then if you go I'll understand leave me just enough love to fill up my hand If you go away if you go away if you go away If you go away as I know you will you must tell the world to stop turning Till you return again if you ever do for what good is love without loving you Can I tell you now as you turn to go I'll be dying slow to the next hello If you go away if you go away if you go away If you go away as I know you might there'll be nothing left in the world to trust Just an empty room full of empty space like the empty look I see on your face I have been the shadow of your shadow If I thought it might have kept me by your side If you go away if you go away if you go away But if you'll stay I'll make you a night like no night has been or will be again I'll sail on your smile I'll glide on your touch I'll talk to your eyes that I love so much But if you go I know I will cry and all the good is gone from the words goodbye If you go away if you go away if you go away please
