The ITER project aims to make the long-awaited transition from experimental studies of plasma physics to full-scale electricity-producing fusion power stations.
The ITER fusion reactor has been designed to produce 500 megawatts of output power while needing 50 megawatts to operate. Thereby the machine aims to demonstrate the principle of producing more energy from the fusion process than is used to initiate it, something that has not yet been achieved in any fusion reactor.
The project is funded and run by seven member entities—the European Union, India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea and the United States. The EU, as host party for the ITER complex, is contributing about 45 percent of the cost, with the other six parties contributing approximately 9 percent each.

This "reverse" operation was necessary so that two of the components making up the module - the vacuum vessel sector itself and thermal shield panels - can be repaired. The Iter project is a multi-billion dollar international collaboration to build a prototype of a fusion power plant. The goal of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion as a source of safe, clean, and virtually limitless energy for the world. The project involves dozens of partners from around the world, including the European Union, the United States, China, Russia, South Korea, and Japan. Construction of the prototype, known as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), began in 2007 and is expected to be completed in 2025. The ITER facility will use a tokamak design to confine and heat hydrogen plasma to the conditions needed for nuclear fusion to occur.
