The Holmenkollen Line (Norwegian:Holmenkollbanen) is an 11.4-kilometre-long (7.1mi)Oslo Metro line which runs between Majorstuen and Nordmarka in Oslo, Norway. Operating as Metro Line 1, it is the route with the fewest passengers and the only one still to have level crossings and short station platforms. The line runs mostly through residential areas of detached houses, and the upper parts of the line principally serve the recreational area of Nordmarka. Holmenkollen Station is located close to Holmenkollen National Arena which hosts international Nordic skiing tournaments.
The line is the oldest one on the metro system, having been opened as a light railway in 1898 by the Holmenkolbanen company. Originally it ran for 6.2km (3.9mi) from Majorstuen Station to Besserud. In 1916, the line was extended to Tryvann, with the last 1.4km (0.87mi) being used for freight only. In 1928, the city terminus was moveTd 2.0km (1.2mi) to the underground Nationaltheatret Station.
Holmenkollen (pronounced[ˈhɔlmənˈkɔlən]) is a neighborhood in the Vestre Aker borough of Oslo, Norway. In addition to being a residential area, the area has been a ski recreation area since the late 19th century, with its famous, eponymous, ski jumping hill, the Holmenkollbakken, hosting competitions since 1892. To the north, the area borders to the woodlands area Marka.
The name is a compound of the farm name Holmen and the finite form of kolle m 'hill, rounded mountain top'. The farm name Holmen (NorseHolmin, from originally *Holmvin) is a compound of holmr m 'bedrock' and vin f 'meadow'.
Holmenkollen is a station on the Holmenkollen Line (Line 1) on the Oslo Metro, located in the Holmenkollen area, between Besserud and Voksenlia. Until 1916 when Holmenkollbanen was completed, the terminus station was Besserud and was called Holmenkollen. The station is at an elevation of 277.7 meters (911ft)above mean sea level. The station architect was Erik Glosimodt.
The station is close to the Holmenkollbakken facility and skiing museum. The area also has several residential buildings.
Norway's national ski arena offers great experiences and magnificent views all year round. Visit the Ski Museum, take the lift up to the Ski Jump Tower or join the crowds at the annual Nordic Skiing World Cup competitions in Holmenkollen.

The Magic of Holmenkollen - Inside the Fence - FIS Cross Country
Cross-country skiing originated in Fennoscandian countries in prehistoric times. It was still widely practiced in the 19th century as a way of moving from place to place in winter. As a sport, cross-country skiing is one of the most difficult endurance sports, as its motions use every major muscle group. Modern cross-country ski competition is experiencing a revolution that is resulting in greater compatibility with audiences which began with the addition of the Sprint event to the World Cup and Olympic competitions in 2002.

Holmenkollen Ski Jump - Oslo Norway
The Holmenkollen Ski jump lies right smack in the middle of Oslo the capital of Norway. HolmenKollen is a short 20 minutes max ride on the metro from the center of the city. I was fortunate enough to capture this footage while hanging out at the top of the Ski jump waiting to see one of the jumper do his thing. I can imagine the thrill jump at this speed and at this height must be but I think this video sums it up pretty well. Check out the second half and you get a real appreciation for the distance off a ski jump.
Much respect to these cats who have the stones to jump off this and to live to talk about it.
Hope you enjoy if you've never seen what a ski jump looks like here's your chance.
