The history of philosophy is the compilation and study of philosophical ideas and concepts through time. Issues specifically related to history of philosophy might include (but are not limited to): How can changes in philosophy be accounted for historically? What drives the development of thought in its historical context? To what degree can philosophical texts from prior historical eras be understood even today?
All cultures — be they prehistoric, medieval, or modern; Eastern, Western, religious or secular — have had their own unique schools of philosophy, arrived at through both inheritance and through independent discovery. Such theories have grown from different premises and approaches, examples of which include (but are not limited to) rationalism (theories arrived at through pure reason), empiricism (theories arrived at through observation), and even through leaps of faith, hope and inheritance (such as the supernaturalist philosophies and religions).
History of philosophy seeks to catalogue and classify such development. The goal is to understand the development of philosophical ideas through time.
history of philosophy, i guess (history of all ideas)

INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY | Timeline of Western Philosophy #1
The Timeline of Western Philosophy. The Ultimate History to Western Philosophy.
This is the first episode in a multipart series on the history of Western Philosophy. This took a tragically large amount of time to produce and I'm hoping all of you really appreciate it.
In this episode we will explore the origins of philosophy and outline this series intentions. So to serve this end, we’ll split up different philosophers into eras. There’s a good deal of overlap here, especially the closer we get to present day, but there’s definitely something to be gained from telling a certain story about the history of philosophy.

THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY ¿WHAT IS PHILOSPHY?

¿WHAT IS PHILOSPHY?
Philosophy is above all a feeling of amazement at reality and asking why things are as they are.
1. THE GREEKS
Philosophy started in Greece in the 5th century BC, when people asked themselves what life was like and why. What is nature? What is life made up of?
Being used to explaining natural phenomena through myths and legends, the Greek philosophers tried to explain the secrets of nature through reason. They tried to imagine what material made up the cosmos, starting with Thales of Miletus, who said everything was made up of water.
Socrates and his disciples centered their inquiries on the person, making philosophy a more practical tool for finding out about human beings. Socrates became famous in Athens for asking people ‘What is ju...
The History of Philosophy: Origins of Ancient Philosophy Around the Globe
In honour of World Philosophy Day on November 18th, we are bringing you an introduction to the history of philosophy, and the origins of ancient philosophy from around the world! What is philosophy you may be asking? Well, the word philosophy comes from the two Greek words philos meaning love and sophos meaning wisdom, so philosophy literally means the love of wisdom. Philosophy can be broadly defined as the study of human existence and the fundamental nature of existence, reality, and knowledge.
There are five main areas of interest in modern-day philosophy which can be applied to philosophy in both the east and the west, but the names that they’re now known by came from the Greeks; Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Politics and Aesthetics. By c. 4000 BCE it seems that philosophy was a...

Pre-Socratics
We’ll begin with the beginning, with a group of Greeks and Mediterraneans that started asking the big questions. What’s going on? Who are we? Why? Their ideas might seem primitive at first, but they are the key to everything which follows.
The Ancients
Right after them come the big hitters, the names you’ve probably heard like Plato and Aristotle. These guys are the ones who really created the tradition and set the terms and ideas that would dominate the thousands of years of thinking to follow.
The Prophets
We’ll then take a step back and a few forward by looking at the religious beliefs and thinkers that will completely change the terms of philosophy. During this time, there’s a little guy named Jesus Christ who sorta becomes a big deal.
The Medieval
Such a big deal that his life and the church that followed him would completely determine the Medieval thinkers that came next. These thinkers would use Christianity as a philosophical tool for understanding the universe.
The Reformers and Revolutionaries
After the Dark Ages, comes a burst of light in the reformers and revolutionaries of the Protestant and Scientific revolutions. We’ll see how changes in religion and knowledge permanently change philosophy.
The Moderns
With the world forever changed, Modern men start producing modern thoughts. We’ll explore their beliefs, their thoughts, and their great hairdos.
The Empiricists
Science and modern philosophy expand with a new type of knowledge of the world. We’ll spend most of our time this episode on the British Isles taking a stab at some of the Empiricist thinkers. We won’t forget to make room for tea time.
The Idealists
Trying to solve some of the riddles from their Anglo-Saxon brethren, the continental Germans will transcend the thinker of their day. These idealists would contribute the biggest breakthroughs in philosophy since perhaps the ancient days.
The Analytic
But some of their thoughts and writing are a little loose-goosey and not properly structured. Analytic thinking comes forth trying to solve some of philosophy’s riddles with logic and mathematics.
The Continental
But not everyone will want philosophy to be about logic and linguistics. Thinkers mostly from Continental Europe will start to rethink what it means to be part of the world. Things get pretty existential.
Contemporary
And then finally, we’ll arrive at where we are today. What does modern philosophy look like? Where’s it going?
That about does it for this episode. Next time we will take a look at the group of thinkers that came before Socrates. These thinkers, the Pre-Socratics are responsible for many things, not least of which is the formula we all learn in first year trigonometry. I’ll do my best to make the next episode more interesting than triangles though. No promises.

Socrates became famous in Athens for asking people ‘What is justice?’, ‘What is beauty?’. He demonstrated that people knew much less than they thought. When they asked him, he would say, ‘I only know that I know nothing’, realizing that acceptance of one’s ignorance is the first step towards wisdom.
Faced with the questions that his master Socrates asked, Plato found the answers in what he called ideas. What are ideas? Plato divides the world in sensory, perceived through feelings, changing and uncertain, and the world of ideas which is permanent and the source of all truth. Good, which Plato compared to the Sun, is the most fundamental idea from which all other truths are born.
Aristotle rejected the big abstract ideas of his teacher Plato, preferring observation accompanied by logic. The Platonic ideas were no longer sufficient to explain the richness of things if you didn’t take into account the material of which they were made. So his questions focussed on the particularities of the world and the human beings who lived in it. What made each one unique? For Aristotle, the wise man was not the one who contemplates good and evil but rather the one who knows what to do in each situation.
In Greek philosophy it’s worth mentioning two influential schools of philosophy which used philosophy as a way of helping us live.
The Stoics thought suffering comes from not accepting how things are; the road to happiness is in the control of the soul that allows us to feel free of the passions and desires that disturb us: ”he who doesn’t expect much will not be disappointed”
The Epicureans on the other hand believed that wisdom is knowing how to enjoy sustainable pleasures, which means those that in the long run will not create suffering.

By c. 4000 BCE it seems that philosophy was already established in Egypt in the form of a response to the Field of Reeds and in Mesopotamia, they saw themselves as co-workers with the gods; the gods created humanity and so the humans owed the gods a debt of gratitude through worship and proper behaviour. Problems arose when humans kept their part of the bargain but it seemed the gods didn’t come through with theirs.
Philosophy developed in India as a response to the Hindu texts known as the Vedas, in the form of the Upanishads and philosophy in ancient Persia was certainly developed before 1500 BCE, which is known due to the Avesta (Zoroastrian scripture) that was written down between 1500 and 1000 BCE and draws on concepts from the Polytheistic early Iranian religion. During the Zhou Dynasty in China between 1046 and 256 BCE, philosophy was first written down in the form of the early Confucian texts. Ancient Greek Philosophy began in the 6th century BCE with Thales of Miletus asking the question, what is the basic stuff of the universe? He was the first of the Pre-Socratics (all the philosophers before Socrates), and then after Socrates came Plato, Aristotle and others.

Today Hank begins to teach you about Philosophy by discussing the historical origins of philosophy in ancient Greece, and its three main divisions: metaphysics, epistemology, and value theory. He will also introduce logic, and how you’re going to use it to understand and critically evaluate a whole host of different worldviews throughout this course. And also, hopefully, the rest of your life.
