The History of Latvia began around 9000 BC with the end of the last glacial period in northern Europe. Ancient Baltic peoples appeared during the second millennium BC, and four distinct tribal realms in Latvia's territories were identifiable towards the end of the first millennium AD. Latvia's principal river, the Daugava River, was at the head of an important mainland route from the Baltic region through Russia into southern Europe and the Middle East that was used by the Vikings and later Nordic and German traders.
In the early medieval period, the region's peoples resisted Christianisation and became subject to attack in the Northern Crusades. Today's capital, Riga, founded in 1201 by Teutonic colonists at the mouth of the Daugava, became a strategic base in a papally-sanctioned conquest of the area by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. It was to be the first major city of the southern Baltic and, after 1282, a principal trading centre in the Hanseatic League. By the 16th century, Germanic dominance in the region was increasingly challenged by other powers.
Latvians and Livs are the indigenous people of Latvia.Latvian is an Indo-European language; it and Lithuanian are the only two surviving Baltic languages. Despite foreign rule from the 13th to 20th centuries, the Latvian nation maintained its identity throughout the generations via the language and musical traditions. Latvia and Estonia share a long common history. As a consequence of the Soviet occupation, both countries are home to a large number of ethnic Russians (26.9% in Latvia and 25.5% in Estonia), some of whom are non-citizens. Latvia is historically predominantly ProtestantLutheran, except for the Latgale region in the southeast, which has historically been predominantly Roman Catholic.
The 2004 European election was the sixth election to the European Parliament. However, as Latvia had only joined the European Union earlier that month, it was the first election European election held in that state. The election took place on June 12.
There were lists of candidates from 16 political parties. with a total of 1019 candidates. The voter turnout was 41.20%, with 574,674 voters casting votes. It was significantly lower than the usual turnout for Latvian parliamentary elections (which has been between 71% and 73% for previous three elections) but higher than the turnout in the rest of the EU.

Countryballs - History of Latvia
Welcome to the Canvas Countryballs channel. In this animated video we will analyze the history of Latvia. Latvia is a country in the east of Europe. Despite its small size, it has a large and interesting history. Until 1917, Latvia was in most of the history of the Russian Duchy - the Duchy of Courland, but as soon as the First World War began, Latvia was occupied by German troops. Latvia gained autonomy during the occupation, and later gained sovereignty after the collapse of the German Empire. However, everything was not so positive... Latvia was touched by a new problem - Russia, and the name of the RSFSR. The RSFSR did not recognize Latvia as an independent homudrast, therefore declared war on it. The Latvians held on tight and pushed the invaders back, defending their sovereignty. How...

The Rise and Fall of the Balts: Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians
How did the Balts (Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians) rise and fall in Europe from one of the most powerful empires in history, to the collection of middling post-Soviet states that we see today? Today let's discuss some of the history of the Baltic peoples and others that have inhabited this region, and the evolution of the modern nations into what we see today.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the Baltic nations and their rise, fall and evolution throughout history. Thanks for watching!

The Latvians held on tight and pushed the invaders back, defending their sovereignty. However, decades later, the USSR was able to carry out its insidious plan by signing an agreement with Germany, the Soviet Union gained the right to a sphere of influence in the Baltic States and annexed the countries in 1939. In the USSR, countries received their national republics. In 1941, without declaring war, Nazi Germany invaded the territory of the USSR. She walked through the territory of the Union with lightning speed, and took the Latvian land and then the capital - Riga. The people of Latvia, under the influence of the propaganda, positively reacted to the occupation, regarding it as liberation from the Communists. In 1943, the Red Army launched an offensive and liberated Latvia! After the War, Latvia was restored, and in 1991, together with Estonia and Lithuania, declared its independence, thereby beginning the collapse of the USSR. After the collapse, Latvia began to actively compete with the United States and Germany, joining NATO and the EU. At the end of the video, I also left a little surprise, so I recommend watching until the end!

The history of Latvia began around 9000 BC with the end of the last glacial period in northern Europe. Ancient Baltic peoples arrived in the area during the second millennium BC, and four distinct tribal realms in Latvia's territory were identifiable towards the end of the first millennium AD. Latvia's principal river Daugava, was at the head of an important trade route from the Baltic region through Russia into southern Europe and the Middle East that was used by the Vikings and later Nordic and German traders.
In the early medieval period, the region's peoples resisted Christianisation and became subject to attack in the Northern Crusades. Latvia's capital city Riga, founded in 1201 by Germans at the mouth of the Daugava, became a strategic base in a papally-sanctioned conquest of the area by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. It was to be the first major city of the southern Baltic and, after 1282, a principal trading centre in the Hanseatic League.
By the 16th century, Baltic German dominance in Terra Mariana was increasingly challenged by other powers. Due to Latvia's strategic location and prosperous trading city of Riga, its territories were a frequent focal point for conflict and conquest between at least four major powers: the State of the Teutonic Order, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Sweden and Russian Empire. The last period of external hegemony began in 1710, when control over Riga and parts of modern-day Latvia switched from Sweden to Russia during the Great Northern War. Under Russian control, Latvia was in the vanguard of industrialisation and the abolition of serfdom, so that by the end of the 19th century, it had become one of the most developed parts of the Russian Empire. The increasing social problems and rising discontent that this brought meant that Riga also played a leading role in the 1905 Russian Revolution.
The First Latvian National Awakening began in the 1850s and continued to bear fruit after World War I when, after two years of struggle in the Latvian War of Independence, Latvia finally won sovereign independence, as recognised by Soviet Russia in 1920 and by the international community in 1921. The Constitution of Latvia was adopted in 1922. Political instability and effects of the Great Depression led to the May 15, 1934 coup d'état by Prime Minister Kārlis Ulmanis. Latvia's independence was interrupted in June–July 1940, when the country was occupied and incorporated into the Soviet Union. In 1941 it was invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany, then reconquered by the Soviets in 1944–45.

This timeline shows modern Latvia from it's independence from German and Russian occupation in 1918 during World War I to the present in 2023.
