Clynelish 14 - The Duke of Sutherland's distillery, A dark history
This video had me flip flopping from being a little amazed that Diageo had produced this whisky at 46% ABV, with no chill filtering and no colouring. As it turned out I had read some mis-information so even though it was 46% ABV it appears that it is chill filtered and some colour has been added. This will always be an issue in countries like Canada because the government does not make it law to have that information on the label of the bottle. The spirit beverage companies are required to put the ABV percentage and size of the bottle but that other valuable information is not enforced. There was no where on Diageo's website or any website that would give me any accurate information on whether it had chill filtration. I only found out about the colouring because another European reviewer r...

TRENTHAM ESTATE THE DUKE OF SUTHERLAND MONUMENT
"In the southern extremity of Trentham Estate, and, in sharp contrast to its natural surroundings, stands the monument to the 1st Duke of Sutherland. This colossal statue, designed by Winks and sculptured by Chantrey, surmounts a plain column of stone on a tiered pedestal.
Set into the base of the column is a weather-worn inscription that gives some indication of the Duke's popularity. It reads:
"In lasting memorial of-George Granville-Duke of Sutherland Marquess of Stafford KG-An upright and patriotic nobleman-a judicious kind and liberal landlord-who identified the improvement of his vast estates-with the prosperity of all who cultivated them-a public yet unostentatious benefactor-who while he provided useful employment-for the active labourer-opened wide his hand to the distresses-of t...

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

The story behind the #Dukes of #sutherland is a captivating journey through centuries of history, #aristocracy, and the dramatic evolution of a prominent #Scottish noble family. With roots that extend deep into the annals of Scottish and British history, the #Dukes of #Sutherland have played a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of their homeland and the broader political and social landscape. From their rise to power during the medieval era to their involvement in controversial events like the Highland Clearances, this tale is not only a chronicle of aristocratic privilege but also a reflection of the broader historical forces that have shaped the #United Kingdom.
The title of #Duke of #Sutherland holds a distinguished place in the #Peerage of the #United Kingdom, having been established by King William IV in 1833, primarily for George Leveson-Gower, who was the 2nd Marquess of Stafford at the time. The prominence of the Dukes of Sutherland in British aristocracy can be traced back to a series of strategic marriages within the Leveson-Gower family, which ultimately led them to become one of the wealthiest landowning families in the entire United Kingdom. This accumulation of #wealth and #titles continued for generations within the family. The title remained within the Leveson-Gower family's grasp until 1963, following the passing of the 5th Duke of #Sutherland. At this point, it transitioned to the #Egerton family, specifically the 5th Earl of Ellesmere.

I only found out about the colouring because another European reviewer read it off the label where it is required by their government. At least some countries do require the companies to mention whether colour was added but not here in Canada. Yes I was a bit disappointed but let's move on. Clynelish has historically played an important role in the John Walker & Sons blends and today is a big part of the Johnnie Walker Gold Label blend. In 2018, the company spent £150m on tourism facilities, including the new brand home for Johnnie Walker in Edinburgh, and upgrading the visitor centres at Clynelish, Glenkinchie, Cardhu and Caol Ila. These distilleries represent the four corners which are the regional styles present in Johnnie Walker blends. The Clynelish 14 year old, was originally launched as part of Diageo’s ‘Hidden Malts’ presentation, as well as the oloroso finished Distiller’s Edition. This whisky is an icon and definitely unique. Well after all the preamble, what do I think of this whisky? Watch the video. Slàinte Mhath
Please note that the contents of this video are my own personal opinion and perspective.

Description: Duke of Sutherland is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom which was created by William IV in 1833 for George Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford. A series of marriages to heiresses by members of the Leveson-Gower family made the Dukes of Sutherland one of the richest landowning families in the United Kingdom. The title remained in the Leveson-Gower family until the death of the 5th Duke of Sutherland in 1963, when it passed to John Egerton, 5th Earl of Ellesmere. The subsidiary titles of the Duke of Sutherland are: Marquess of Stafford , Earl Gower , Earl of Ellesmere, of Ellesmere in the County of Shropshire , Viscount Trentham, of Trentham in the County of Stafford , Viscount Brackley, of Brackley in the County of Northampton , and Baron Gower, of Sittenham in the County of York . The marquessate of Stafford, the earldom of Gower and the viscounty of Trentham are in the Peerage of Great Britain, the dukedom, the earldom of Ellesmere and the viscounty of Brackley in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, and the barony of Gower in the Peerage of England. The Duke is also a Baronet, of Sittenham in the County of York, a title created in the Baronetage of England in 1620. Between 1839 and 1963 the Dukes also held the titles of Lord Strathnaver and Earl of Sutherland, both in the Peerage of Scotland. The Scottish titles came into the family through the marriage of the first Duke to Elizabeth Sutherland, 19th Countess of Sutherland.

I take a bike ride up The Duke of Sutherland statue on top of Ben Bhraggie at Golspie taking in the glorious views across the Firth of Dornoch and the North east Scottish coastline. I manage to fly the drone around the monument and take in the fantastic views.

We are Kev & Yvonne and 3 Shih Tzu's, Charlie, Dolly & Delilah we live full-time in our motorhome spending the first 6 months travelling around Scotland. We first started our travels in a converted VW T6 that we brought from new as a panel van. After one year of travelling around we decided we need to find something that was more comfortable and less strenuous to set up.
We travel around the country in our Motorhome with our three Shih Tzu's taking wildlife photography and flying our drone for aerial photography and love to share it with a wider audience. We would like to take further steps and start doing commentary about the things that we see on our travels as our channel grows.

It reads:
"In lasting memorial of-George Granville-Duke of Sutherland Marquess of Stafford KG-An upright and patriotic nobleman-a judicious kind and liberal landlord-who identified the improvement of his vast estates-with the prosperity of all who cultivated them-a public yet unostentatious benefactor-who while he provided useful employment-for the active labourer-opened wide his hand to the distresses-of the widow the sick and the traveller-a mourning and grateful tenantry-uniting with the inhabitants of the neighbourhood-erected this pillar-AD MDCCCXXXIV (1834)"
The actual origin of the 1st Duke's title is a little complicated but the following brief account may shed some light:
The 1st Duke's family name was Leveson-Gower and Trentham Hall was their ancestral home along with three other mansions and over a million acres of land. His wife-to-be, Countess Elizabeth, was the daughter of the 18th Earl of Sutherland, a completely separate family, whose possessions included Dunrobin Castle and the entire County of Sutherland. In 1771, at the age of 7, Elizabeth applied to the House of Lords for her late father's title; this application was granted and she became known as Countess Elizabeth of Sutherland and Baroness Strathnaver. In 1785, Countess Elizabeth, who was Britain's greatest heiress, married George Granville Leveson-Gower. Some 48 years later he was made a Duke in recognition of his political service and, as a compliment to his wife, chose as his title the name Sutherland; his wife, therefore, became known as Duchess-Countess. Eventually the two titles were brought together by their son, the 2nd Duke."

The Highland Clearances of Scotland (A Short Documentary)
The Highland Clearances of Scotland (A Short Documentary)
The Highlands of Scotland – known for their immense beauty, legends of old, and one of the last wild, sparsely populated places in Europe. The rugged terrain and wild weather may cause you to think that it has always been this way - but there was a time when these lands weren’t quite so empty.
In this short documentary, I'll take you to the abandoned village of Arichonan in Argyll and back into history to discover crofting communities and the highland clearances that dispersed them.
In the second half of the documentary, we'll touch upon the Scottish Gaelic Renaissance and the work being done to preserve the Gaelic language and culture.

Highland Clearances
Season 04 : British Isles
Episode 01 : Highland Clearances : Scotland, UK
A person’s home country is often closely tied to their identity. Even countries with similarities like the United States, Canada and England have their own customs and heritage that makes the people born there unique. It’s easy to assume that continuing to call your country home is your birthright. After all, you were born there and citizenship is all you know. Sometimes though, outsiders can take that birthright away.

Evicted By Force - The Tragedy of the Highland Clearances
At the start of the 18th century, roughly 30% of Scots lived in the Highlands and Islands. By the turn of the 20th century, the figure was only 8%. It is estimated that somewhere around 70,000 people were driven out of their homes and their country. And there continue to be ripple effects of the Highland Clearances down to the present day.
The Highland Clearances is a deeply complex subject. In this video we set the stage, then illustrate two of the most egregious examples of what happened.

What they Don't Say About Highland Clearance
The Highland Clearances seem like a relentlessly negative story of downtrodden victims. However there were small victories for poor Highland tennants. Scottish history tour guide, Bruce Fummey, tells the tale of the women of Coigach, and how they made a stand against the family with the worst reputations of all clearing landlords.

THE HIGHLAND CLEARANCES AND THE MODERN SCOTTISH DIASPORA: stories from Scotlands history

HIGHLAND CLEARANCES, HENRY DUNDAS, AND THE SCOTTISH SLAVE TRADE: Oh, and the Duke of Sutherland
In HIGHLAND CLEARANCES, HENRY DUNDAS, AND THE SCOTTISH SLAVE TRADE: And the Duke of Sutherland Scottish history tour guides Bruce Fummey links three of the tales from Scotlands History that are too often obscured. At the time of filming we are in the middle of a discussion of Black Lives Matter #BLM. The debate about racial justice has often focused on controversial statues, Henry Dundas the most prominent. The Scottish slave trade is almost forgotten in our consciousness, but the Highland clearances remain.
Even Robert the Bruce has been bizarrely brought into the recent statue debate. I hope this video provides a broad context

The Highland Clearances and the Death of the Scottish Clan System
Did the Highland Clearances destroy the Scottish clan system? Well sort of, but it’s not that simple. Few events in Scottish history had such a profound impact as the Highland Clearances, not only on the clan system, but the resulting emigration from Scotland is one key reason why so many people of Scottish heritage live in places such as the US, Canada and Australia to name a few. I know a lot of people from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries watch this channel, so if you have a story about the highland clearances in your family history, I would love to hear about it in the comments below…
On a very high-level, the Highland Clearances were the forced eviction of inhabitants of the Highlands and the western islands beginning in the 18th century and continuing intermittently into the mid-19th century. People were forced to leave their homes and many were burned out, with the removals clearing the land of people primarily to allow for the introduction of the more profitable sheep farming. The clearances also had a profound impact on the clan system and the highland way of life, but the destruction of the Scottish clan system did not start with the clearances (more of them later), it started hundreds of years earlier.
The story starts with this guy. What the hell is he wearing a? Imagine walking down a rough part of Glasgow with that on today. He ruled as the King of Scotland as James VI from 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death in 1625. It is confusing that he has two names, was he not thinking about YouTubers in 2023, so I’m just going to call him James I in this video.
When James ascended the throne of England in 1603, he moved south to Westminster and ruled Scotland from there, only visiting Scotland once more before he died. It was under his reign that the Ulster plantation began for Irish viewers by the way. James I was very suspicious of the highland clans, and in order to better control the north, James kept the chiefs away from their clans for extended periods, requiring them to do duties that kept them away from their people. This was to ensure that the peoples’ allegiance was to their King and not to their clan Chief. Official documents from the time described the people of the Highlands as "void of the knawledge" who were prone to "all kynd of barbarous and bestile cruelteis". The Gaelic language, spoken fluently by James IV, became known in the time of James VI as "Erse" or Irish, implying that it was foreign in nature.
