Daniel Webster (January 18, 1782–October 24, 1852) was a leading American senator and statesman during the era of the Second Party System, which was the political system in the United States from about 1828 to 1854, characterized by rapidly increasing voter interest and personal loyalty to parties. Webster was the outstanding spokesman for American nationalism with powerful oratory that made him a key Whig leader. He spoke for conservatives, and led the opposition to Democrat Andrew Jackson and his Democratic Party. He was a spokesman for modernization, banking, and industry, but not for the common people who composed the base of his opponents in Jacksonian Democracy. "He was a thoroughgoing elitist, and he reveled in it," says biographer Robert Remini. During his 40 years in national politics, Webster served in the House of Representatives for eight years (representing New Hampshire and then Massachusetts) and in the Senate for 19 years (representing Massachusetts), and served as the United States Secretary of State twice for a total of more than four years, under presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore.
After receiving his engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, he worked in the family air conditioning and heating business that he now owns and operates. He has been a resident of Florida since the age of seven and resides in Winter Garden, Florida.
First elected in 1980, Webster served 28 years in the state legislature in Tallahassee, becoming the longest serving legislator in Florida history. During that time, he rose to become Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senatemajority leader, and left the legislature only after reaching the legal term limits in 2008. He ran unopposed in all of his elections for the state legislature except for the first three; 1980, 1982, and 1984.
Daniel Webster is an outdoor bronze sculpture of Daniel Webster by artist Thomas Ball, located at Central Park in Manhattan, New York. The "larger-than-life-size" statue was commissioned in the 1870s, to be installed along Central Park's Mall. It was instead installed along the West Drive at 72nd Street due to size restrictions. Daniel Webster was presented by Gordon W. Burnham in 1876.
The Daniel Webster Memorial consists of a 12-foot (3.7 m) bronze statue of Webster on an 18-foot (5.5 m) granite pedestal in a sober classical style. The statue was sculpted by Gaetano Trentanove.
On the east and west sides of the pedestal are bronze bas-relief panels illustrating events in Webster's life: the Webster–Hayne debate; the dedication of the Bunker Hill Monument.
Daniel W. Webster (born 1960) is an American health policy researcher and the director of the Center for Gun Policy and Research at Johns Hopkins University. He is also the deputy director for research at the Johns Hopkins Center for the Prevention of Youth Violence, and professor of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Education
Webster received his MPH from the University of Michigan in 1985 and his ScD from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 1990.
Research
Webster is known for his research into gun violence and laws, and he has published numerous articles on these and related subjects. In 2015, he and his colleagues published a study that found that the passage of a permit-to-purchase (PTP) handgun law in Connecticut was associated with a 40% reduction in firearm homicides in the state in the ten years after the law's enactment in 1995. Later that year, Webster co-authored another study looking at changes in such laws in Connecticut and Missouri, the latter of which repealed its permit-to-purchase law in 2007. This study found that the enactment of Connecticut's PTP law was associated with a 15.4% reduction in firearm suicide rates in the state, while Missouri's repeal of its PTP law was associated with a 16.1% increase in these rates. A previous study by Webster et al. had found that the repeal of Missouri's PTP law was associated with increased annual murders of 0.93 per 100,000 people, or about 55 to 63 per year.
Daniel is a masculinegiven name and a surname of Hebrew origin. It means, "God is my judge", and derives from two early biblical figures, primary among them Daniel from the Book of Daniel. It is a common given name for males, and is also used as a surname. It is also the basis for various derived given names and surnames.
Background
The name evolved into over 100 different spellings in countries around the world. Nicknames (Dan, Danny) are common in both English and Hebrew, although in some instances "Dan" may be a complete given name rather than a nickname. The name "Daniil" (Даниил) is common in Russia. Feminine versions (Danielle, Daniela, Daniella, Dani, Danitza) are prevalent as well. The Dutch names "Daan" and "Daniël" are also variations of Daniel. A related surname developed as a patronymic, Daniels. Other surnames derived from "Daniel" include McDaniel and Danielson.
In the United States, the U.S. Social Security Administration reports that Daniel has peaked as the fifth most popular name for newborns in 1985, 1990, 2007, and 2008. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that in the 2000 census, "Daniels" was the 182nd most common surname in the U.S., while "McDaniel" was ranked at 323, and "Daniel" (without a final "s") was ranked at 380.

Indivisible: Daniel Webster and the Birth of American Nationalism
When the United States was founded in 1776, its citizens didn’t think of themselves as “Americans.” They were New Yorkers or Virginians or Pennsylvanians. It was decades later that the seeds of American nationalism—identifying with one’s own nation and supporting its broader interests—began to take root. But what kind of nationalism should Americans embrace? The state-focused and racist nationalism of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson? Or the belief that the U.S. Constitution made all Americans one nation, indivisible, which Daniel Webster and others espoused?

7th March 1850: Daniel Webster makes his "Seventh of March" speech in favour of Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was a series of legislative measures designed to address the divisive issue of slavery and its expansion following the Mexican-American War. The compromise aimed to maintain a balance between the interests of free and slave states, while averting the looming threat of secession and civil war.

Paul tells the fascinating story of how Webster, a young Dartmouth graduate and New Hampshire attorney, rose to political prominence by capturing the national imagination through his powerful oratory and unwavering belief in the United States. In his speeches—on the floors of the House and the Senate, in court, and as secretary of state—Webster argued that the Constitution was not a compact made by states but an expression of the will of all Americans. As the greatest orator of his age, Webster saw his speeches and writings published widely, and his stirring rhetoric convinced Americans to see themselves differently, as a nation bound together by a government of laws, not parochial interests. As these ideas took root, they influenced future leaders, among them Abraham Lincoln, who drew on them to hold the nation together during the Civil War.

The Compromise of 1850 was a series of legislative measures designed to address the divisive issue of slavery and its expansion following the Mexican-American War. The compromise aimed to maintain a balance between the interests of free and slave states, while averting the looming threat of secession and civil war.
Key provisions of the Compromise of 1850 included the admission of California as a free state, the organization of the territories of New Mexico and Utah without reference to slavery, the abolition of the slave trade in the District of Columbia, and the enactment of a stricter Fugitive Slave Law to aid in the capture and return of runaway slaves.
Daniel Webster’s "Seventh of March" speech saw the prominent senator from Massachusetts, who was a staunch defender of the Union, deliver an address endorsing the compromise measures as a means to preserve national unity and avert a possible civil war. The speech saw Webster argue that the preservation of the Union was paramount, and that compromises were necessary to maintain the delicate balance between the free and slave states, even if it meant making concessions on the issue of slavery.
Webster’s endorsement of the Compromise of 1850, particularly his support for the Fugitive Slave Law, sparked intense debate and controversy. While some praised his dedication to preserving the Union, others condemned him for betraying the principles of freedom and justice. Nevertheless, the passage of the Compromise of 1850 temporarily defused the immediate crisis and postponed the outbreak of the Civil War for another decade.

I just spoke on the House Floor in opposition to H.R. 737 which does nothing to protect sharks from finning. This bill would have a devastating effect on responsible American fishermen, including many in my own district, who have made many sacrifices to conserve and rebuild our shark populations.
I have introduced H.R. 788, which recognizes the sacrifices American fishermen have made to rebuild and sustain our shark populations. It encourages other nations wishing to export shark products to the United States to adhere to the same high standards for conservation and management.

The Daniel Webster Memorial is located beside Washington, DC's Scott Circle at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue, NW.
Webster twice served as U.S. Secretary of State, and represented both New Hampshire and Massachusetts in Congress, serving in the House of Representatives for the former, and the Senate for the latter. With Henry Clay of Kentucky and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, Webster was one third of the "Great Triumvirate" in the mid-19th century's "Golden Age" of the U.S. Senate.
Sculpted by Gaetano Trentanove, the statue was a gift of "Washington Post" founder Stilson Hutchins, and was dedicated in 1900.
Historian Richard Norton Smith narrates.

Prof. Allison describes Daniel Webster, a Massachusetts Statesman who supported the Fugitive Slave Act, which would mark the downfall of his political career.
