Earl of Southampton was a title that was created three times in the Peerage of England. The first creation came in 1537 in favour of the courtier William FitzWilliam. He was childless and the title became extinct on his death in 1542. The second creation came in 1547 in favour of the politician Thomas Wriothesley, 1st Baron Wriothesley, Lord Chancellor between 1544 and 1547. He had already been created Baron Wriothesley (pronounced "rose ley" /ˈroʊzli/) in 1544, also in the Peerage of England. He was succeeded by his third but only surviving son, the second Earl. On his death the titles passed to his second but only surviving son, the third Earl. He is best remembered as a patron of William Shakespeare. He was succeeded by his second but only surviving son, the fourth Earl. He was a prominent statesman and served as Lord High Treasurer under Charles II between 1660 and 1667. In 1653 he had succeeded his father-in-law Francis Leigh, 1st Earl of Chichester as second Earl of Chichester according to a special remainder in the letters patent. However, Lord Southampton had no sons and the titles became extinct on his death in 1667. The third creation came in 1670 for Barbara Palmer, mistress of Charles II. She was made Baroness Nonsuch and Duchess of Cleveland at the same time. See the latter title for more information on this creation.
Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton (pronunciation uncertain: /ˈraɪzli/RYE-zlee (archaic),/ˈrɒtsli/ROTT-slee (present-day) and /ˈraɪəθsli/RYE-əths-lee have been suggested) (24 April 1545 – 4 October 1581), was an English peer.
Wriothesley had two brothers who died young, and five sisters: Elizabeth (buried 16 January 1555), who married, as his first wife, Thomas Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex; Mary (d. December 1561), who married firstly, Richard Lyster, grandson of Sir Richard Lyster, and secondly, William Shelley of Michelgrove; Katherine, who was contracted to marry Sir Matthew Arundell, but instead married Sir Thomas Cornwallis; Anne, who was contracted to marry Sir Henry Wallop, but who died before the marriage could take place, and Mabel, who married Sir Walter Sandys.
Southampton (i/saʊθˈæmptən, -hæmptən/) is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England, and is situated 75 miles (121km) south-west of London and 19 miles (31km) north-west of Portsmouth. Southampton is a major port and the closest city to the New Forest. It lies at the northernmost point of Southampton Water at the confluence of the River Test and River Itchen, with the River Hamble joining to the south of the urban area. The city, which is a unitary authority, has an estimated population of 253,651. The city's name is sometimes abbreviated in writing to "So'ton" or "Soton", and a resident of Southampton is called a Sotonian.
Significant employers in Southampton include The University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University, Southampton Airport, Ordnance Survey, BBC South, the NHS, ABP and Carnival UK. Southampton is noted for its association with the RMSTitanic, the Spitfire and more generally in the World War II narrative as one of the departure points for D-Day, and more recently as the home port of a number of the largest cruise ships in the world. Southampton has a large shopping centre and retail park called WestQuay. In October 2014, the City Council approved a follow-up from the WestQuay park, called WestQuay Watermark. Construction by Sir Robert McAlpine commenced in January 2015.Hammerson, the owners of the retail park, aim to have at least 1,550 people employed on its premises at year-end 2016.
Southampton is a station on the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, on North Main Street between Prospect Street and Willow Street in Southampton, New York. (Prospect and Willow Streets are on the west side of North Main Street, but the station is located on the east side.)
The station has one eight-car-long high-level side platform on the south side of the main track. Two siding tracks are on the north side of the main track.
Southampton, officially the Town of Southampton, is a town located in southeastern Suffolk County, New York, partly on the South Fork of Long Island. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town had a total population of 56,790. Southampton is included in the stretch of shoreline prominently known as The Hamptons.
The town was founded when settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts established residence on lands obtained from local Shinnecock Indian Nation in 1640. The first settlers included eight men, one woman, and a boy who came ashore at Conscience Point. These men were Edward Howell, Edmond Farrington, Edmund Needham, Abraham Pierson the Elder, Thomas Sayre, Josiah Stanborough, George Welbe, Henry Walton and Job Sayre.
By July 7, 1640, they had determined the town boundaries. During the next few years (1640–43), Southampton was further increased in population by 43 families.
The first meeting house was on a hill that is the site of the current Southampton Hospital. The oldest existent house in the town is the Halsey House at 249 Main Street, which was built by Thomas Halsey, one of the first Englishmen to trade with the Shinnecocks.

Please join me in my investigation of the two portraits of Henry Wriothesley which depict him in the Tower of London. I trace the circumstances of his imprisonment, and what happened during his time there and afterwards. I then take a close look at two paintings of him in the Tower, addressing several questions. When were they painted? Why are there two of them? and what are the messages? and how did they get where they are today? It's a fascinating tale.

JOHN FLORIO & HENRY WRIOTHESLEY: A COLLABORATION? | PART II
Who first discovered that Henry Wriothesley was John Florio’s patron? The Answer is: A Shakespeare’s scholar.
Charlotte Carmichael Stopes was a British scholar, author, and campaigner for women's rights. Her most successful publication was British Freewomen: Their Historical Privilege (published 1894), a book which influenced and inspired the early twentieth century British women's suffrage movement. She wrote several books relating to the life and work of Shakespeare. And she published the very first biography of Henry Wriothesley in 1922: The life of Henry, third earl of Southampton. Shakespeare's patron.
In the preface of her book, Stopes pointed out that she began a research into the life of Henry Wriothesley in attempt to find traces of Shakespeare. Sadly, she found nothing.
But she...

They didn’t have a master-student relationship, they were very close friends. They also played tennis together, went at theatre together. Henry Wriothesley was very close with the Danvers brothers. The Danvers brothers were Henry and Charles danvers. they were sons of magistrate Sir John Danvers. Henry was a soldier and like Southampton he was 20 years old, at an early age he became a page to Sir Philip Sidney, whom he accompanied to the Low Countries, and was probably present at the battle of Zutphen in 1586 where Sidney lost his life. Subsequently, he served the Earl of Essex and was knighted by him for his services in the field; the earl of Essex was very closet to henry so there was a double bond of union between henry and the young Earl.
The Danvers brothers shared lots of hobbies with Henry: they loved literature, Italy, theatre. They were young, rich, and beautiful aristocrats and spent a lot of time together.
However, in 1594 the danvers family had a problem with their neighbours. The Long family.

In the preface of her book, Stopes pointed out that she began a research into the life of Henry Wriothesley in attempt to find traces of Shakespeare. Sadly, she found nothing.
But she found John Florio!

William Shakespeare is on trial. Questioned about his relationship with the 3rd Earl of Southampton. What exactly did happen between them?
The evidence: Tender poems. Financial dependency. Attempted revolution. A charge of treason.
A compelling new romantic drama set in the powder keg of sex, politics and power in Elizabethan England.
This world premiere is written by award-winning playwright Nick Dear (Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch, The National Theatre; The Art of Success, Royal Shakespeare Company, Olivier Nomination) and directed by Nuffield’s Director, Samuel Hodges, following his critically-acclaimed production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie in 2015.

Rather surprisingly there are clues to the relationship between Elizabeth 1st and Henry Wriothesley 3rd Earl of Southampton, hidden in the text and the cartouche of the Pregnancy Portrait. Take a fascinating trip with me into the minds of Tudor cryptographers. The result may surprise you. Part 2 coming shortly looks at whether or not what is revealed could possibly have taken place.

In this video I assess the evidence for Henry Wriothesley being the Queen's son, hinted at by the poem in the Pregnancy Portrait. I have collected information from several sources and present it as clearly as possible. So read it all through and make up your own mind. I will be very interested to receive comments.

When John Florio lived with Henry Wriothesley, he was a real factotum for him: he was his servant, his writer, his secretary, writing letters for him…he was his teacher, sharing with henry his passion for Italian literature and Italian theatre. They didn’t have a master-student relationship, they were very close friends. They also played tennis together, went at theatre together. Florio followed henry everywhere, and he also got involved in his private affairs.

Henry Wriothesley was the son of Henry second earl of Southampton and Mary Browne.
In 1591 John Florio entered the patronage of Henry Wriothesley, and he began a successful career not just as a writer, but continuing his activity as ghostwriter, collaborating with his friends and colleagues. Despite having received many harsh criticism and attacks, even death threats from his enemies, Florio enjoyed several happy years at Titchfield, and thanks to Henry’s generous patronage, he worked safely, happily, at the centre of London most interesting literary circle.

But she found John Florio!

Patron? Collaborator? Employer? Voyeur? Lover?
Dramatic design by Alex Lowde (Linda, Royal Court [Costume Design], Tis Pity She’s A Whore, Shakespeare Globe) transforms the auditorium into an intimate setting that places the audience on the stage at the heart of the performance.
New Evidence that Shakespeare was NOT his Son's Father!
*A YouTube presentation by John Anthony (uploaded 9 February 2021, link below) deciphers the jewels on the earl's coronet in one of these engravings, thus corroborating the theory laid out here.
