Earl of Peterborough was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1628 for John Mordaunt, 5th Baron Mordaunt (see Baron Mordaunt for earlier history of the family). He was succeeded by his eldest son, Henry, the second Earl. He was a soldier and courtier. Lord Peterborough had two daughters but no sons. He was succeeded in the barony of Mordaunt (which could be passed through female lines) by his daughter, Mary, 7th Baroness. The earldom was passed on to his nephew, Charles Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Monmouth (see below for earlier history of this branch of the family), who became the third Earl. He was a prominent soldier and politician. In 1705 he also succeeded his cousin Mary Mordaunt, 7th Baroness Mordaunt, in the barony of Mordaunt. His eldest son John Mordaunt, Viscount Mordaunt, predeceased him, and Lord Peterborough was consequently succeeded by his grandson, Charles, the fourth Earl (the eldest son of Viscount Mordaunt). The barony of Mordaunt (of the 1659 creation), the viscountcy of Mordaunt and the earldoms of Peterborough and Monmouth, became extinct on the death of the latter's son, the fifth Earl, in 1814. The barony of Mordaunt was passed on to his half-sister, Lady Mary Anastasia Grace Mordaunt (see Baron Mordaunt for further history of this title).
He returned to England in 1642, and served for a little while in the parliamentary army, where he commanded his ailing father's troop of horse. In April 1643, after his father's death, he deserted to the king at Oxford. Now Earl of Peterborough, he joined the Cavaliers and fought at the battles of Bristol, Gloucester and Newbury in 1643. At Newbury (20 September 1643) he was wounded in the arm and thigh, and had his horse shot under him. In command of a regiment raised at his own expense he served in the west during the following summer and winter, at Cropredy Bridge and Lostwithiel in 1644. In about December 1644, he married Lady Penelope O'Brien (the only daughter of the 5th Earl of Thomond) and they had two daughters. He was in France during the later phases of the struggle. In 1646 he returned to England and compounded for his estates. A private interview with Charles as he passed through Ampthill to Hampton Court, in the summer of 1647, prompted him to make a last effort on the king's behalf, and in July 1648 he united with the George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Henry Rich, 1st Earl of Holland in raising the royal standard at Dorking. The plan was to seize Reigate, but foiled in this, the insurgents were driven back on Kingston, and eventually dispersed in the neighbourhood of Harrow by the parliamentary forces (7 July). Mordaunt was severely wounded, but escaped to Antwerp, and in the following year returned to England and recompounded for his estates (May 1649).
The local topography is flat and in some places lies below sea level, for example in the Fens that lie to the east of Peterborough. Human settlement in the area began before the Bronze Age, as can be seen at the Flag Fen archaeological site to the east of the current city centre also with evidence of Roman occupation. The Anglo-Saxon period saw the establishment of a monastery, Medeshamstede, which later became Peterborough Cathedral.
It now consists of the City of Peterborough and the municipalities of Douro-Dummer, Trent Lakes, Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, North Kawartha and Selwyn plus the Curve Lake First Nation.
History
The riding's borders have differed slightly since its creation in 1953, but has always included most or all of Peterborough County and its county seat of Peterborough, Ontario. Prior to 1952, the riding was split in two, sometimes partly joined to neighbouring Hastings County. Since 1999, the riding boundaries and names of the provincial and federal electoral districts have been identical.
It was created in 1953 from Peterborough Westriding. It consisted initially of the city of Peterborough and the townships of Galway, Cavendish, Harvey, Ennismore, Smith, Douro, Otonabee, and North Monaghan. In 1966, the townships of Galway, Cavendish and Harvey were removed from the riding, and the townships of Belmont and Methuen, Dummer, Smith and Asphodel (excluding the Village of Hastings) were added.

Why is Peterborough the worst city in England? If you’re one of my subscribers, you no doubt would have seen at least one of my videos about Peterborough. How I wish I had an opportunity to rank Peterborough among good cities! Unfortunately, the reverse has been the case. It’s been found among the five most hated cities in the United Kingdom. It once ranked among the worst cities to live in England. Please try and see my videos on this to understand the background. Responses from my subscribers who know enough to really comment about Peterborough show that the city deserves more attention. And we’ve vowed not to relent until things change there. Therefore, we are now fully focusing on Peterborough as the worst city to live in England.
Where Is Peterborough?
Peterborough is such a famous city that doesn’t need to be described to anyone who knows a thing or two about cities in the UK. However, since there’s no harm in reiteration, we’ll take this route for the umpteenth time. Peterborough is a cathedral city and unitary authority area in Cambridgeshire. It was initially part of Northamptonshire before it was ceded to the present county in 1974.
It is located on the Nene River which flows some 30 miles (or 49 kilometers) to the northeast. Peterborough is about 76 miles (122 kilometers) from London. The city with the motto: “upon this rock I will build my church” is far cry from what the leader that made the promise over two thousand years ago had in mind. Today, people who know the city claim that Peterborough is the worst city to live in England.
A View From the Past
The city whose original name was Medeshamstede before it was later changed to Burgh and later to what it is now, together with its surrounding areas has been inhabited for thousands of years. The city may have been established as early as 44 AD because the archeological finds from the first century contain numerous references to Peterborough in its original name. Going by that original name, it was likely an Anglian settlement around 655 AD when Sexwulf established a monastery on the parcel of land granted to him by Peada of Mercia. It was an important center for ceramic production during Roman civilization. Throughout the Middle Ages, the city featured in the history of Britain. It played some roles during the civil war.
The modern history that can help us understand how Peterborough inherited what would turn it into the worst city in England began in the 1840s. That was when railway lines began operating locally. The Great Northern Railway line from London to York was opened in 1850 and it transformed Peterborough from just a market town to an industrial center.
The rise and fall of various industries including brickmaking, sugar, and woodwork, contributed to the current plight of the city.
Peterborough Today
Today's Peterborough covers an area of 132.58 square miles or 348.38 square kilometers. This is where you find over 200,000 people, most of who are unhappy with their city. Interestingly, Peterborough is a multi-ethnic society. About 82.5 percent of the city's residents are white, 11.7 percent Asian, 2.3 percent black, and 0.8 percent others, while 2.8 percent of the residents are mixed race. The population started growing rapidly with the arrival of railways in the 19th century. While the Second World War dealt some blow to this city’s population, it was designated a New Town in 1960.
It thereafter stopped being a center for brick manufacture and industrial employment fell. Today, most of the jobs available in the city are in financial services and distribution. Peterborough is at the Junction 15 of the A1/A1 (M) primary route.
