Risk management
Risk management is the identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks (defined in ISO 31000 as the effect of uncertainty on objectives) followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events or to maximize the realization of opportunities. Risk management’s objective is to assure uncertainty does not deflect the endeavor from the business goals.
Risks can come from various sources: e.g., uncertainty in financial markets, threats from project failures (at any phase in design, development, production, or sustainment life-cycles), legal liabilities, credit risk, accidents, natural causes and disasters as well as deliberate attack from an adversary, or events of uncertain or unpredictable root-cause. There are two types of events i.e. negative events can be classified as risks while positive events are classified as opportunities. Several risk management standards have been developed including the Project Management Institute, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, actuarial societies, and ISO standards. Methods, definitions and goals vary widely according to whether the risk management method is in the context of project management, security, engineering, industrial processes, financial portfolios, actuarial assessments, or public health and safety.

Occupational safety and health
Occupational safety and health (OSH) also commonly referred to as occupational health and safety (OHS) or workplace health and safety (WHS) is an area concerned with the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. The goals of occupational safety and health programs include to foster a safe and healthy work environment. OSH may also protect co-workers, family members, employers, customers, and many others who might be affected by the workplace environment. In the United States the term occupational health and safety is referred to as occupational health and occupational and non-occupational safety and includes safety for activities outside work.
In common-law jurisdictions, employers have a common law duty to take reasonable care for the safety of their employees. Statute law may build upon this to impose additional general duties, introduce specific duties and create government bodies with powers to regulate workplace safety issues: details of this will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Health and Safety Executive
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is a non-departmental public body of the United Kingdom with its headquarters in Liverpool, England. It is the body responsible for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare, and for research into occupational risks in England and Wales and Scotland. Responsibility in Northern Ireland lies with the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland. The HSE was created by the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and has since absorbed earlier regulatory bodies such as the Factory Inspectorate and the Railway Inspectorate though the Railway Inspectorate was transferred to the Office of Rail Regulation in April 2006. The HSE is sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions. As part of its work HSE investigates industrial accidents, small and large, including major incidents such as the explosion and fire at Buncefield in 2005. Though it formerly reported to the Health and Safety Commission, on 1 April 2008, the two bodies merged.

In a significant workplace safety case, bedding manufacturer Sartex Quilts and Textiles Limited faced prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following two severe incidents resulting in serious injuries to employees. The HSE inspector described these injuries as "serious and avoidable." The first incident occurred on March 29, 2020, involving a 32-year-old employee from Burnley. On his first day, he suffered a life-altering accident while cleaning a cutting machine, leading to the amputation of three fingers from his left hand. A second incident unfolded on October 22, 2021, involving a 51-year-old employee from Rochdale. In a significant workplace safety case, bedding manufacturer Sartex Quilts and Textiles Limited faced prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following two severe incidents resulting in serious injuries to employees. The HSE inspector described these injuries as "serious and avoidable."
The first incident occurred on March 29, 2020, involving a 32-year-old employee from Burnley. On his first day, he suffered a life-altering accident while cleaning a cutting machine, leading to the amputation of three fingers from his left hand.
A second incident unfolded on October 22, 2021, involving a 51-year-old employee from Rochdale. While operating a quilting machine, the worker's hand became entangled, resulting in lacerations, crush injuries, and the amputation of two fingertips.
HSE inspectors found that Sartex Quilts and Textiles Limited failed to guard machinery adequately and neglected to implement proper procedures to isolate machinery from power, as recommended by HSE guidelines.
The company pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and Regulation 11 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. Sartex Quilts and Textiles Limited was fined £251,250 plus costs at Manchester & Salford Magistrates’ Court on February 14, 2024.
These incidents highlight the critical importance of proper machinery guarding and safety procedures in the workplace. Employers must ensure the safety of their employees by identifying and mitigating risks associated with machinery operation.

Risk management
Risk management is the identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks (defined in ISO 31000 as the effect of uncertainty on objectives) followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events or to maximize the realization of opportunities. Risk management’s objective is to assure uncertainty does not deflect the endeavor from the business goals.
Risks can come from various sources: e.g., uncertainty in financial markets, threats from project failures (at any phase in design, development, production, or sustainment life-cycles), legal liabilities, credit risk, accidents, natural causes and disasters as well as deliberate attack from an adversary, or events of uncertain or unpredictable root-cause. There are two types of events i.e. negative events can be classified as risks while positive events are classified as opportunities. Several risk management standards have been developed including the Project Management Institute, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, actuarial societies, and ISO standards. Methods, definitions and goals vary widely according to whether the risk management method is in the context of project management, security, engineering, industrial processes, financial portfolios, actuarial assessments, or public health and safety.

In a significant workplace safety case, bedding manufacturer Sartex Quilts and Textiles Limited faced prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following two severe incidents resulting in serious injuries to employees. The HSE inspector described these injuries as "serious and avoidable."
The first incident occurred on March 29, 2020, involving a 32-year-old employee from Burnley. On his first day, he suffered a life-altering accident while cleaning a cutting machine, leading to the amputation of three fingers from his left hand.
A second incident unfolded on October 22, 2021, involving a 51-year-old employee from Rochdale. While operating a quilting machine, the worker's hand became entangled, resulting in lacerations, crush injuries, and the amputation of two fingertips.
HSE inspectors found that Sartex Quilts and Textiles Limited failed to guard machinery adequately and neglected to implement proper procedures to isolate machinery from power, as recommended by HSE guidelines.
The company pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and Regulation 11 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. Sartex Quilts and Textiles Limited was fined £251,250 plus costs at Manchester & Salford Magistrates’ Court on February 14, 2024.
These incidents highlight the critical importance of proper machinery guarding and safety procedures in the workplace. Employers must ensure the safety of their employees by identifying and mitigating risks associated with machinery operation.
