"Hanging on the Telephone" is a song written by Jack Lee. It was first performed by his short-lived US West Coast power pop trio The Nerves.
Background
The tune was the lead-off track on The Nerves's 1976 EP, the group's only release. New wave band Blondie later popularised "Hanging on the Telephone", when it released a cover of the song as the second single off Parallel Lines in both the US and UK. The tune eventually reached number 5 in the UK in November 1978, as well as inspired other cover versions.
Like one of Blondie's subsequent singles, "Sunday Girl", "Hanging on the Telephone" employs a double backbeat rhythm in its drumming pattern. This percussion style also appeared on other power pop singles from the period, like The Romantics' 1978 release "Tell It to Carrie".
"Hanging On" is a song by American recording artist Active Child from his debut studio album, You Are All I See (2011). It was written by Active Child and Ariel Rechtshaid, and produced by Rechtshaid. The song's music video, directed by T.S. Pfeffer and Robert McHugh, debuted on January 19, 2012. English singer Ellie Goulding covered "Hanging On" in 2012, while Australian alternative rock band Something for Kate included an acoustic cover of the song as a bonus track on the two-disc special edition of their 2012 album Leave Your Soul to Science.

In 2012, "Hanging On" was covered by English recording artist Ellie Goulding for her second studio album, Halcyon. An alternative version featuring English rapper Tinie Tempah was released as a free download on 10 July 2012 via Goulding's SoundCloud page, serving as a promotional single for the album. The accompanying music video was directed by Ben Newbury and released on 13 July.
The Telephone, or L'Amour à trois is an English-language comic opera in one act by Gian Carlo Menotti, both words and music. It was written for production by the Ballet Society and was first presented on a double bill with Menotti's The Medium at the Heckscher Theater, New York City, February 18-20, 1947. The Broadway production took place on May 1, 1947, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The Metropolitan Opera presented it once, on July 31, 1965.
Roles
Synopsis
Ben, bearing a gift, comes to visit Lucy at her apartment; he wants to propose to her before he leaves on a trip. Despite his attempts to get her attention for sufficient time to ask his question, Lucy is occupied with interminable conversations on the telephone. Between her calls, when Lucy leaves the room, Ben even takes the risk of trying to cut the telephone cord, though his attempt is unsuccessful. Not wanting to miss his train, Ben leaves without asking Lucy for her hand in marriage. But Ben makes one last attempt: He calls Lucy from a telephone booth outside on the street and makes his proposal. She consents, and the two join in a romantic duet over the phone line, at the end of which Lucy makes sure that Ben remembers her phone number.
The Telephone is a 1988comedy-drama film starring Whoopi Goldberg as an out-of-work actress who starts doing some prank phone calls which creates a chain of events. Actor Rip Torn makes his directorial debut with this film, with Elliott Gould and John Heard in supporting roles. It was released on January 22, 1988 and was distributed by New World Pictures.
Plot
Vashti Blue is an out-of-work actress who we watch make a series of prank calls throughout the night, that causes a chain of events. She is eventually revealed as being medically unstable, as a telephone contractor turns up to her home to confiscate the handset due to arrears with her phone bill. It is revealed that her telephone line was disconnected some time ago, much to her denial. As he struggles to take the handset, she strikes him in the head and stabs him with a knife.
The Telephone was produced by Hawkeye, a company formed by screenwriters Terry Southern and Harry Nilsson. According to Southern, "We had this idea about an out-of-work actor who gets so into hallucinatory-type improvisations that he even makes up phone calls to himself." Nilsson and Southern wrote the screenplay with Robin Williams in mind for the main character, and attempted to get the comedian a copy of the script, but Williams' manager did not want him to make the film. After viewing Whoopi Goldberg's standup performances, Nilsson and Southern thought that she would be right for the part. After seeing Rip Torn's direction of stage plays, the writers felt that Torn would be ideal to direct the film.

I'm in the phone booth, it's the one across the hall If you don't answer, I'll just ring it off the wall I know he's there, but I just got to call Don't leave me hanging on the telephone Don't leave me hanging on the telephone I heard your mother now she's going out the door Did she go to work or just go to the store All those things she said, I told you to ignore Oh, why can't we talk again Oh, why can't we talk again Oh, why can't we talk again Don't leave me hanging on the telephone Don't leave me hanging on the telephone It's good to hear your voice you know it's been so long If I don't get your calls then everything goes wrong I want to tell you something you've known all along Don't leave me hanging on the telephone I had to interrupt and stop this conversation Your voice across the line gives me a strange sensation I'd like to talk when I can show you my affection Oh, I can't control myself Oh, I can't control myself Oh, I can't control myself Don't leave me hanging on the telephone Hang up and run to me (Oh!) Hang up and run to me (Oh!) Hang up and run to me (Oh!) Hang up and run to me (Oh-whoa-oh!)
Slang terms that often confuse parents include ‘roadman’, meaning a young man or boy who hangs out on the street, ‘peng’ (attractive), ‘bare’ (a lot of), ‘OMG’ (oh my God) and ‘boujee’ (classy or fancy).
