The seat of the municipality, Halden is a border town located at the mouth of Tista River on the Iddefjord, the southernmost border crossing between Norway and Sweden. The town of Halden is located about 120km (75mi) south of Oslo, 190km (120mi) north of Gothenburg, and 12km (7.5mi) east of the border crossing at Svinesund.
History
Evidence of early human settlements in this region of Norway have been found, particularly in the Svinesund area of the municipality where evidence of early settlements from the Nordic Bronze Age have been found. Named after a small farm Hallen (English: "rise" or "slope") first mentioned in 1629, "Halden", became the city of Fredrikshald in 1665, named after Frederick III of Denmark. The Gud med oss (God be with us) coat-of-arms created in 1665 shows a knight standing on a mountain, yellow on a blue background, and was inspired by the bravery of the citizens of the city in the Dano-Swedish War (1658–1660).
Halden was a Norwegian newspaper, published in Halden in Østfold county.
Halden was started in 1882 as a liberal competitor to the city's dominant, conservative newspaper Smaalenenes Amtstidende. The first editor was Jens Olsen. Sigurd Østensen Sandberg later took over informally, then formally from 1906 until his death in 1931. From the same year the newspaper was jointly printed with Glommen. The circulation was stable at around 1,500 copies in both 1920 and 1932.
The newspaper struggled to survive, and the German occupation of Norway worsened the situation. The last edition of Halden came on 1 October 1941. The stop came at the same time as Glommen was forcibly shut down, and neither newspaper returned.

Many inmates in Finland live in “open prisons,” where they are allowed to own a vehicle, leave for work or school, and host overnight guests. Now, the country is funding educational programs where prisoners learn technology skills like artificial intelligence.

Halden Prison in Norway looks sort of like a fancy dorm room or a hotel — much different than the barbed wire and cramped cells we often associate with prison design. Its look is all part of a plan to create a more humane prison, one where the architecture isn’t part of the punishment.
Most prisons around the world are consolidated into one single building. This style makes it easy and efficient for inmates to move around, but the design is monotonous and full of visually unappealing materials, like steel and concrete. Plus, tight quarters inside these spaces can foster conflict.
Halden has a different structure: a campus design, where inmates move from one building to another, and are surrounded by lots of windows and construction materials that help muffle noise and take advantage of natural light.
The prison’s layout also encourages guards to interact with inmates face-to-face, which fosters better relationships and reduces security-related incidents.
Halden’s design style is expensive — which is why we mostly see it implemented in places with good social support systems, like Western Europe and Scandinavia. Still, the design is setting new standards for what prisons could be like in the future.

I remember Daddy's hands, folded silently in prayer And reaching out to hold me, when I had a nightmare You could read quite a story, in the callouses and lines Years of work and worry had left their mark behind I remember Daddy's hands, how they held my Mama tight And patted my back, for something done right There are things that I've forgotten, that I loved about the man But I'll always remember the love in Daddy's hands Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin' Daddy's hands, were hard as steel when I'd done wrong Daddy's hands, weren't always gentle But I've come to understand There was always love in Daddy's hands I remember Daddy's hands, working 'til they bled Sacrificed unselfishly, just to keep us all fed If I could do things over, I'd live my life again And never take for granted the love in Daddy's hands Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin' Daddy's hands, were hard as steel when I'd done wrong Daddy's hands, weren't always gentle But I've come to understand There was always love in Daddy's hands Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin' Daddy's hands, were hard as steel when I'd done wrong Daddy's hands, weren't always gentle But I've come to understand There was always love
