Hezbollah rockets hit Haifa after Israel pounds Beirut
At least ten people have been injured, after rockets from southern Lebanon landed in Haifa.
This is the first time the port city has been hit since the war on Gaza began a year ago.
Haifa is situated on Israel's Mediterranean Coast, about 30 kilometres from the border with Lebanon.
Until now, rockets fired towards the port city from southern Lebanon have been largely intercepted by Israel's air defence systems.
Al Jazeera’s Laura Khan reports from Beirut, Lebanon.

The Predictive Business
Lecture by Dr. Kira Radinsky - March 27, 2014 at Technion Computer Engineering Center
In our highly data-driven environment, businesses are essentially becoming semi-autonomous agents, constantly competing for resources, customers and talent. How can they adapt and remain competitive in an ever-changing market? What techniques could leverage real-time data to boost their customer acquisition process? How can they learn about their competition, when the competition is learning them? Can the effects of business decisions on the eco-system be anticipated? To answer those questions, I will present machine learning and text mining techniques, that mine data from heterogeneous sources, to predict in such multi-agent temporal environments.

From Sensors to Sense
The amount of data that a single mobile device can collect is staggering. The critical question that arises is how to make sense of these data? I will present a framework that translates sensor streams into plain language. We will explain how automatic machine translation can be used to facilitate understanding of human behavior from data in a way that is interpretable and searchable. This understanding can ultimately lead to better treatment and diagnosis for many medical conditions.

A well is an excavation or structure created in the ground by digging, driving, or drilling to access liquid resources, usually water. The oldest and most common kind of well is a water well, to access groundwater in underground aquifers. The well water is drawn up by a pump, or using containers, such as buckets or large water bags that are raised mechanically or by hand. Water can also be injected back into the aquifer through the well. Wells were first constructed at least eight thousand years ago and historically vary in construction ...

Sweet foods, such as this strawberry shortcake, are often eaten for dessert.
Sweetness is one of the five basic tastes and is universally regarded as a pleasurable experience. Foods rich in simple carbohydrates such as sugar are those most commonly associated with sweetness, although there are other natural and artificial compounds that are sweet at much lower concentrations, allowing their use as non-caloric sugar substitutes. Examples of foods that may be used as non-sugar sweet substitutes include saccharin, aspartame, xylitol and acesulfame potassium. Other compounds may alter perception of sweetness itself.

Acre was an important city during the Crusades, and was the site of several battles. It was the last city held by the Crusaders in the Levant before it was captured in 1291.
In present-day Israel, the population was 49,380 in 2019, made up of Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze, and Baháʼís. In particular, Acre is the holiest city of the Baháʼí Faith in Israel and receives many pilgrims of that faith every year. Thirty-two per cent of the city's population is Arab. The mayor is Shimon Lankri, re-elected in 2018 with 85% of the vote.

Contextual Recommendations in Multi-User Devices
Lecture by Technion alumnus Ronny Lempel, Chief Data Scientist, Yahoo! Labs - Technion Computer Engineering Center, March 27, 2014
Recommendation technology is often applied on experiences consumed through a personal device such as a smartphone or a laptop, or through personal accounts such as one's social network account. However, in other cases, recommendation technology is applied in settings where multiple users share the application or device. Examples include game consoles or high end smart TVs in household livingrooms, family accounts in VOD subscription services, and shared desktops in homes. These multi-user cases represent a challenge to recommender systems, as recommendations exposed to one user may actually be more suitable for another user.
This talk tackles the shared device recommendation problem by applying context to implicitly disambiguate the user (or users) that are being recommended to. Specifically, we address the household smart-TV situation and introduce the WatchItNext problem, which — given a device — taps the currently watched show as well as the time of day as context for recommending what to watch next. Implicitly, the context serves to disambiguate the current viewers of the device and enables the algorithm to recommend significantly more relevant watching options than those output by state-of-the-art non-contextual recommenders. Our experiments, which processed 4-months long viewing histories of over 350,000 devices, validate the importance and effectiveness of contextual recommendation in shared device settings.

Excavation or structure to provide access to groundwater
This article is about water wells. For other uses, see Well (disambiguation).

Wells were first constructed at least eight thousand years ago and historically vary in construction from a simple scoop in the sediment of a dry watercourse to the qanats of Iran, and the stepwells and sakiehs of India. Placing a lining in the well shaft helps create stability, and linings of wood or wickerwork date back at least as far as the Iron Age.

The difference between a well and a cistern is in the source of the water: a cistern collects rainwater where a well draws from groundwater.
Wells have traditionally been sunk by hand digging, as is still the case in rural areas of the developing world. These wells are inexpensive and low-tech as they use mostly manual labour, and the structure can be lined with brick or stone as the excavation proceeds. A more modern method called caissoning uses pre-cast reinforced concrete well rings that are lowered into the hole. Driven wells can be created in unconsolidated material with a well hole structure, which consists of a hardened drive point and a screen of perforated pipe, after which a pump is installed to collect the water. Deeper wells can be excavated by hand drilling methods or machine drilling, using a bit in a borehole. Drilled wells are usually cased with a factory-made pipe composed of steel or plastic. Drilled wells can access water at much greater depths than dug wells.
Two broad classes of well are shallow or unconfined wells completed within the uppermost saturated aquifer at that location, and deep or confined wells, sunk through an impermeable stratum into an aquifer beneath. A collector well can be constructed adjacent to a freshwater lake or stream with water percolating through the intervening material. The site of a well can be selected by a hydrogeologist, or groundwater surveyor. Water may be pumped or hand drawn. Impurities from the surface can easily reach shallow sources and contamination of the supply by pathogens or chemical contaminants needs to be avoided. Well water typically contains more minerals in solution than surface water and may require treatment before being potable. Soil salination can occur as the water table falls and the surrounding soil begins to dry out. Another environmental problem is the potential for methane to seep into the water.

Very early neolithic wells are known from the Eastern Mediterranean: The oldest reliably dated well is from the pre-pottery neolithic (PPN) site of Kissonerga-Mylouthkia on Cyprus. At around 8400 BC a shaft (well 116) of circular diameter was driven through limestone to reach an aquifer at a depth of 8 metres (26 ft). Well 2070 from Kissonerga-Mylouthkia, dating to the late PPN, reaches a depth of 13 metres (43 ft). Other slightly younger wells are known from this site and from neighbouring Parekklisha-Shillourokambos. A first stone lined well of 5.5 metres (18 ft) depth is documented from a drowned final PPN (c. 7000 BC) site at ‘Atlit-Yam off the coast near modern Haifa in Israel.
"WATER on FOREST: OLD Heritage Onderwater".
Wood-lined wells are known from the early Neolithic Linear Pottery culture, for example in Ostrov, Czech Republic, dated 5265 BC, Kückhoven (an outlying centre of Erkelenz), dated 5090 BC, and Eythra in Schletz (an outlying centre of Asparn an der Zaya) in Austria, dated 5200 BC.
Some of the earliest evidence of water wells is located in China. The neolithic Chinese discovered and made extensive use of deep drilled groundwater for drinking.[citation needed] The Chinese text The Book of Changes, originally a divination text of the Western Zhou dynasty (1046 -771 BC), contains an entry describing how the ancient Chinese maintained their wells and protected their sources of water. A well excavated at the Hemedu excavation site was believed to have been built during the neolithic era. The well was cased by four rows of logs with a square frame attached to them at the top of the well. 60 additional tile wells southwest of Beijing are also believed to have been built around 600 BC for drinking and irrigation.

The UEFA Champions League (abbreviated as UCL) is an annual club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by top-division European clubs, deciding the competition winners through a round robin group stage to qualify for a double-legged knockout format, and a single leg final. It is one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition in European football, played by the national league champions (and, for some nations, one or more runners-up) of their national associations.

Introduced in 1955 as the Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens (French for European Champion Clubs' Cup), and commonly known as the European Cup, it was initially a straight knockout tournament open only to the champions of Europe's domestic leagues, with its winner reckoned as the European club champion. The competition took on its current name in 1992, adding a round-robin group stage in 1991 and allowing multiple entrants from certain countries since 1997.[1] It has since been expanded, and while most of Europe's national leagues can still only enter their champion, the strongest leagues now provide up to four teams.[2][3] Clubs that finish next-in-line in their national league, having not qualified for the Champions League, are eligible for the second-tier UEFA Europa League competition, and from 2021, teams not eligible for the UEFA Europa League will qualify for a new third-tier competition called the UEFA Europa Conference League.[4]
In its present format, the Champions League begins in late June with a preliminary round, three qualifying rounds and a play-off round, all played over two legs. The six surviving teams enter the group stage, joining 26 teams qualified in advance. The 32 teams are drawn into eight groups of four teams and play each other in a double round-robin system. The eight group winners and eight runners-up proceed to the knockout phase that culminates with the final match in late May or early June.[5] The winner of the Champions League qualifies for the following year's Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.[6][7] Spanish clubs have the highest number of victories (18 wins), followed

The chemosensory detects sweetness, which varies between both individuals and species, has only begun to be understood since the late 20th century. One theoretical model of sweetness is the multipoint attachment theory, which involves multiple binding sites between a sweetness receptor and a sweet substance.
Studies indicate that responsiveness to sugars and sweetness has very ancient evolutionary beginnings, being manifest as chemotaxis even in motile bacteria such as E. coli.[1] Newborn human infants also demonstrate preferences for high sugar concentrations and prefer solutions that are sweeter than lactose, the sugar found in breast milk.[2][3] Sweetness appears to have the highest taste recognition threshold, being detectable at around 1 part in 200 of sucrose in solution. By comparison, bitterness appears to have the lowest detection threshold, at about 1 part in 2 million for quinine in solution.[4] In the natural settings that human primate ancestors evolved in, sweetness intensity should indicate energy density, while bitterness tends to indicate toxicity[5][6][7] The high sweetness detection threshold and low bitterness detection threshold would have predisposed our primate ancestors to seek out sweet-tasting (and energy-dense) foods and avoid bitter-tasting foods. Even amongst leaf-eating primates, there is a tendency to prefer immature leaves, which tend to be higher in protein and lower in fibre and poisons than mature leaves.[8] The 'sweet tooth' thus has an ancient evolutionary heritage, and while food processing has changed consumption patterns,[9][10] human physiology remains largely unchanged.[11
