Construction of Belfast, the first Royal Navy ship to be named after the capital city of Northern Ireland, and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day, 17 March 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939 Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment and armour. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943, and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944 Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945 Belfast was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 1950–52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963.
Belfast (/ˈbɛl.fɑːst/ or /ˈbɛl.fæst/; from Irish:Béal Feirste, meaning "mouth of the sandbanks") is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. Most of Belfast, including the city centre, is in County Antrim, but parts of East and South Belfast are in County Down.
It is on the flood plain of the River Lagan. The city's motto is Pro Tanto Quid Retribuamus (roughly Latin for "what shall we give in return for so much").
By population before the 2015 council reform, Belfast was the 17th largest city in the United Kingdom and the second largest on the island of Ireland. It is the seat of the devolvedgovernment and legislative Northern Ireland Assembly. At the time of the 2011 census, the city of Belfast had a population of 286,000. With the 2015 council reform it is 333,871 and lies at the heart of the Belfast Urban area, which has a population of 483,418 and the Belfast Metropolitan Area, which had a population of 579,276 at the 2001 census. The larger urban zone, as defined by the European Union, had an estimated total population of 673,000 on 1January2012. Belfast was granted city status in 1888.

Now a museum ship, the Town-class HMS Belfast has a long, proud service history. In World War II she assisted in the destruction of German battleship Scharnhorst and supported the Normandy landings. However, the Royal Navy ships faced another enemy — mines. Belfast fell prey to the most dangerous of them. It's a miracle that she remained afloat, and it's a miracle that she could return to her base for repairs.

Battle of North Cape: HMS Belfast and the sinking of the Scharnhorst
Scharnhorst was one of the most dangerous German warships of the Second World War, and the last of her kind. In late December 1943, she was sunk, after attempting to intercept two Arctic convoys. What happened at the Battle of North Cape?
On Boxing Day 1943, Vice Admiral Robert Burnett was in Soviet Russia on board HMS Belfast, having escorted an Arctic convoy there. Burnett’s warships were preparing to escort the next convoy back to Britain, when intelligence reached them from the Admiralty in London. The battleship Scharnhorst and five destroyers had left their Norwegian base. These convoys had baited out one of the Allies’ most wanted warships. HMS Belfast and the rest of the convoy were no longer embarking on a return journey home, they were heading for battle.

What was it like to work in the gun turrets? | HMS Belfast's Armament
HMS Belfast's primary armament throughout her life was her 6-inch guns. It took over 200 men working together over 8 decks to keep these guns firing - what made these guns so complicated? Our experts take us from the Gun Direction Platform to the Fire Control Table, then into A-Turret and A-Turret's shell room to see how exactly they worked. We then take a look at her secondary 4-inch guns and where her two Supermarine Walruses used to stand.

'Inside Britain's Last Surviving WW2 Cruiser | HMS Belfast'
Listen to James' Warfare podcast here: https://play.acast.com/s/the-world-wars
It's a 12,000 tonne light cruiser moored on the River Thames in the middle of London. It's the last surviving vessel of its kind from the Second World War. It was involved in the sinking of the Scharnhorst, played a critical role on D-Day and later the Korean War. This is the HMS Belfast.
In this video James Rogers, a war historian, dives into the story of one of the world’s best known warships. The ship's service in the Royal Navy extended from the beginning of the Second World War to the height of the Cold War, during which its capabilities were tested and developed.
We’re going to find out what made HMS Belfast one of the most impressive cruisers of the 20th century, and why so many people still feel a connection to this vessel today.

Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

Battle Stations: HMS Belfast - Steel Fortress (War History Documentary) The illustrious career of HMS Belfast. Commissioned in 1938, the vessel was a ...
