The bridge consists of two bridge towers tied together at the upper level by two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal tension forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical components of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee.
The Tower Bridge replaced the 1911 M Street Bridge in Sacramento, which was originally a swing through-truss railroad bridge. Later, 9-foot (2.7m) roadway sections were added as cantilevered sections on both sides of the existing rail bridge. Sacramento's population more than doubled between 1910 and 1935, rendering the existing bridge inadequate to handle heavy traffic. In 1933, the city realized that it needed a better crossing over the Sacramento River in case of war.
Tower Bridge is a true London icon one we have walked past, driven over and floated under many times, yet we have never stopped to explore Tower Bridge and find out why it was built, how they did it, or how it all works!
In this video we take a tour of Tower Bridge, looking back at how the Victorian's designed and built this wonderful bridge. We'll go inside and walk across the pedestrian walkways and take in the views from the viewing areas which now includes a new glass floor.
It really was a fascinating insight into a bridge we take for granted each day, so join us as we explore the amazing Tower Bridge.

Flying Through London’s Tower Bridge (World First)
Skydivers Marco Fürst and Marco Waltenspiel became the first people to wingsuit fly through London’s iconic Tower Bridge. The two wingsuiters reached a top speed of 246 km/h in their dive over the river Thames before performing a complex aerial maneuver known as a flare to fly upwards after the close proximity of Tower Bridge to safely open their parachutes 🪂

Did you know London's Tower Bridge opens around 800 times a year?
Tower Bridge is one of London’s most famous landmarks, bursting with a rich and fascinating history to discover.
Tower Bridge opens around 800 times a year now, but when it was first built in 1894, the bascules were lifted an average of 17 times a day!
Today, most boats on this part of the Thames are tourist boats. Back then, the ships sailing on the Thames were carrying other important types of cargoes.

That Time a Bus Jumped Tower Bridge
Back in 1952, Albert Gunter pulled off one heck of a stunt by jumping his bus over Tower Bridge in London. I mean, talk about nerve! He revved up that double-decker and sent it flying over the open drawbridge, with passengers on board and everything. It was like a scene straight out of an action movie! The whole city was buzzing about it afterward, and Gunter became a bit of a local legend. Can you imagine being on that ride? Talk about an adrenaline rush!

Have you watched Tower Bridge on your visit to London?

Back in 1952, Albert Gunter pulled off one heck of a stunt by jumping his bus over Tower Bridge in London. I mean, talk about nerve! He revved up that double-decker and sent it flying over the open drawbridge, with passengers on board and everything. It was like a scene straight out of an action movie! The whole city was buzzing about it afterward, and Gunter became a bit of a local legend. Can you imagine being on that ride? Talk about an adrenaline rush!
