HMNZS Achilles was a Leander-classlight cruiser which served with the Royal New Zealand Navy in the Second World War, the second of five in the class. Originally constructed by the Royal Navy, she was loaned to New Zealand in 1936 before formally joining the new Royal New Zealand Navy in 1941. She became famous for her part in the Battle of the River Plate, alongside HMSAjax and HMSExeter and notable for being the first Royal Navy cruiser to have fire control radar, with the installation of the New Zealand-made SS1 fire-control radar in June 1940.
After Second World War service in the Atlantic and Pacific, she was returned to the Royal Navy. She was sold to the Indian Navy in 1948 and recommissioned as INS Delhi. She was scrapped in 1978.
Design
She was the second of five ships of the Leander-class light cruisers, designed as effective follow-ons to the Yorkclass. Upgraded to Improved Leander-class, she could carry an aircraft and was the first ship to carry a Supermarine Walrus, although both Walruses were lost before the Second World War began. At one time she carried the unusual DH.82 Queen Bee which was a radio-controlled unmanned aircraft, normally used as a drone.
Six ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Achilles, after the Greek hero Achilles. Four others, mostly prizes, have had the French spelling of the name, Achille.
HMSAchilles(1747) was an 8-gun schooner purchased in 1747. She was captured in 1748 by the Spanish.
HMSAchilles(1863) was a broadside ironcladfrigate launched in 1863. She became a base ship in 1902 and was renamed HMS Hibernia. She was renamed HMS Egmont in 1904, HMS Egremont in 1916 and HMS Pembroke in 1919. She was sold in 1923.
She was renamed Achille in 1786 to prevent confusion with the Petit Annibal.
She served with the French Navy until 1794, when she was captured by the Royal Navy during the battle of the Glorious First of June. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy as the third-rateHMS Achille, retaining the French spelling of the name. However, she was in a poor state and was broken up at Plymouth in 1796, just two years after her capture.
HMS Achilles was a Leander-class frigate of the Royal Navy. She was built by Yarrow at Glasgow. She was launched on 21 November 1968 and commissioned on 9 July 1970. She was sold to Chile in 1991 and washed away from her berth at Talcahuano by a tsunami in February 2010. She was scuttled the following month by the Chilean Navy as a danger to navigation.
Service history
In 1970, Achilles deployed to the Far East where there was, at that time, a large British naval presence. She escorted a number of larger vessels while there, including Eagle.
In 1974, Achilles joined the 3rd Frigate Squadron, and later that year deployed to the Far East on a nine-month deployment as part of Task Group 317.2. The task group visited a number of African ports on their way to the Far East and Indian Ocean, including South Africa, a visit that caused some controversy back in the UK at the time. The task group visited a variety of ports in the Far East and took part in a number of exercises. Achilles was active as a radio relay vessel during the fall of South Vietnam.
Achilles’ most notable feat during the Trojan War was the slaying of the Trojan hero Hector outside the gates of Troy. Although the death of Achilles is not presented in the Iliad, other sources concur that he was killed near the end of the Trojan War by Paris, who shot him in the heel with an arrow. Later legends (beginning with a poem by Statius in the 1st century AD) state that Achilles was invulnerable in all of his body except for his heel. Because of his death from a small wound in the heel, the term Achilles' heel has come to mean a person's point of weakness.
Etymology
Achilles' name can be analyzed as a combination of ἄχος (akhos) "grief" and λαός (laos) "a people, tribe, nation." In other words, Achilles is an embodiment of the grief of the people, grief being a theme raised numerous times in the Iliad (frequently by Achilles). Achilles' role as the hero of grief forms an ironic juxtaposition with the conventional view of Achilles as the hero of κλέος kleos ("glory", usually glory in war).
A range of cars were advertised, mostly with single-cylinder engines by Aster and De Dion. Other mechanical parts were also bought in, and it seems likely that only the bodies were originated by Achilles. At least 5 different models were produced including the 8hp, 9hp and 12hp.
The Achilles, a Leander class cruiser of the Royal, Royal New Zealand and Indian Navies, is today's subject.

A Royal Navy Instructional film Anti-submarine Warfare (ASW) featuring HMS Achilles (F12) 1974
Navy Instructional film on the role of the Medium-range Anti-submarine Torpedo Carrying Helicopter (MATCH) in co-ordinated anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations. The film uses stock footage of German U-boat attacks on allied convoys during the Battle of the Atlantic, and various shots of Soviet submarines, to emphasise the importance of ASW. A Royal Navy Wasp helicopter, launched from the Leander Class frigate HMS Achilles (F12) then carries out an attack on a submarine using air-dropped torpedoes, with direction from the parent ship's operations room, including computer plotting. The Wasp is then re-armed and scrambled to make another attack. The roles of the RAF's Nimrod long-range maritime patrol aircraft and the dipping-sonar equipped Sea King helicopter are also described.
