Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron and Bawdy Medieval Literature - Fabian Alfie
HSP Spring 2018 Class Promotional
Presented by: Professor Fabian Alfie
Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron (ca. 1348-1351) is a masterpiece of world literature. Boccaccio is one of the Three Crowns, the three founding authors of Italian literature (along with Dante and Petrarch). Yet his Decameron is a conundrum. Composed in the wake of the Black Plague of 1348, the Decameron presents a world populated with flesh-and-blood individuals motivated by personal desires. Often its characters are women, and their desires are sexual; Boccaccio’s female characters use their intellect to achieve personal gratification. Yet to his contemporary readership, Boccaccio did not appear revolutionary. Although he was an innovative author in many ways, Boccaccio grounded his text in the tradition of bawdy liter...

Yet to his contemporary readership, Boccaccio did not appear revolutionary. Although he was an innovative author in many ways, Boccaccio grounded his text in the tradition of bawdy literature already well established in the Middle Ages. In this seminar we will discuss the Decameron closely, examining its links to the works that preceded it, and its impact on subsequent literary developments throughout the world.

making a matcha latte at home 🍵
matcha latte at home 🍵 ~
Making myself a cup of matcha is one of the things I look forward to most in the morning. It’s almost peaceful, in a way - and I feel so energized after.
The most important ingredient is, of course, the matcha. You want to use the highest quality for drinking, which is ceremonial grade. It is pricy, but you’re going to save so much money compared to spending $8 each time at a cafe.
* the matcha I’m using is from @tenzotea — you can use my code for a discount! JASMINE15
-- https://tenzotea.co/
For today's matcha I used soy milk with a splash of homemade maple syrup (the best kind). On most days though, I’ll drink it the traditional way with just water and matcha. Experiment and see which flavor combinations you like best!

I Drank Green Tea Daily - Watch What Happened

CONTROL THE HEAT with this PEACH TEA #peachtea #tea #greentea #greentearecipe #denstea
Looking for a quick refresher? Look no further.
The basic ratio you'll need to make the peach syrup is 2 peaches (peel and seed included) to 1 sugar and 1 water. So, you would use same amount of weight in grams of sugar and water as you would two peaches.
Start by washing the peaches well with water. Then, cut them into pieces. Put all the ingredients in a pot and add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice for each of peach used.
Next, bring it to a boil on medium heat. Once boiled, turn the heat to low and simmer for 15min. Smash peaches with a fork and boil for another 10 minutes. Strain the syrup and let it cool down. You now have peace syrup ready to be used.
You can try combining it with your sencha to make an iced peach sencha tea. Enjoy!

In a nutshell:
Everyone today knows that drinking green tea is good for you but exactly how? Oh, and did you know that green tea is also good for oral health? Keep on watching to know more about what happens to you when you drink green tea daily. In an animal study, rats with rheumatoid arthritis that were given green tea extract had less severe symptoms than rats with RA that only had plain water. Although more studies are needed on humans, it has been established already that antioxidants in green tea can provide inflammation relief to those with arthritis and other inflammatory-driven diseases.
According to one study on 10 healthy men, they experienced a 4% increase in the number of calories burned after taking green tea extract. In another study on 12 healthy men, green tea extract enhanced fat oxidation by 17% compared with the placebo participants. Another benefit of drinking green tea every day is improved diabetes symptoms including insulin sensitivity, pancreatic cell damage, and inflammation. Also, green tea can help prevent diabetes in the first place.
And based on a study, women who had high rice diets and drank 7 or more cups of green tea a day had a lower diabetes risk than those who didn`t have green tea. Consider including green tea in your daily diet. Albeit not the most impactful reason to drink green tea daily, people who have compromised oral health would think otherwise. Thanks to the catechins in green tea, it can suppress the growth of bacteria, lowering the risk of infections.
For this reason, antioxidant-rich foods and beverages like green tea are believed to fight, if not prevent, this process. The antioxidants in green tea, specifically catechin EGCG have shown positive results for reducing metastasis and improving outcomes for cancers of the lungs, colon, breasts, skin, and many others. Drinking green tea regularly may help lower high blood pressure, leading to better heart health. According to nine studies, people who drank 1-3 cups of green tea daily had a lower risk of heart attack and stroke, as opposed to those who drank less than 1 cup.
In a different large study of more than 40,000 adults, it was shown that green tea drinkers had a lesser risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Based on human clinical studies, as well as cellular and animal experiments, green tea and its major component, EGCG, have anti-inflammatory effects. Apparently, drinking green tea doesn`t just help your heart, but also your brain, especially as you age. Several studies find that catechin compounds in green tea have different protective effects on neurons in test tubes and animal models.
And speaking of brain benefits, green tea has also been suggested to enhance one`s working memory and cognitive functions. Are there side effects to drinking green tea every day? Although there are heaps of reasons to drink green tea, there are also some reasons to avoid it. Those who have allergies or sensitivity to caffeine may need to limit or avoid green tea. The catechins and caffeine in green tea are famous for their health benefits.

Enjoy!
