Greater Manchester spans 493 square miles (1,277km2), which roughly covers the territory of the Greater Manchester Built-up Area, the second most populous urban area in the UK. It is landlocked and borders Cheshire (to the south-west and south), Derbyshire (to the south-east), West Yorkshire (to the north-east), Lancashire (to the north) and Merseyside (to the west). There is a mix of high-density urban areas, suburbs, semi-rural and rural locations in Greater Manchester, but land use is mostly urban — the product of concentric urbanisation and industrialisation which occurred mostly during the 19th century when the region flourished as the global centre of the cotton industry. It has a focused central business district, formed by Manchester city centre and the adjoining parts of Salford and Trafford, but Greater Manchester is also a polycentric county with ten metropolitan districts, each of which has at least one major town centre and outlying suburbs.
Greater Manchester Police had its early origins in the Metropolitan Manchester City Police which formed sometime in the 1830s, just after the Metropolitan Police Force in London. The service then changed its name to Manchester Borough Police. Upon Manchester gaining city status in 1853, the police service then changed its name again to Manchester City Police to reflect this status. The name of Manchester City Police remained for over a century until 1968 when Salford City Police was merged in Manchester City Police, resulting in the new name of Manchester and Salford Police. Then in 1974, in accordance with the Local Government Act 1972, Greater Manchester Police was formed with parts of the Cheshire Constabulary and Lancashire Constabulary merged into GMP.
Manchester was settled by colonists around 1672 as a farming community, although at the time it was known just as Orford Parish (the name that can be found on the memorial to the Revolutionary soldiers from the town). The many rivers and brooks provided power for paper, lumber and textile industries, and the town quickly evolved into an industrial center. The town of Hartford once included the land now occupied by the towns of Manchester, East Hartford, and West Hartford. In 1783, East Hartford became a separate town, which included Manchester in its city limits until 1823.
The Pitkin Glassworks operated from 1783-1830 as the first successful glassworks in Connecticut. The Pitkin Glassworks Ruin have been preserved by a historical society.
The station has two side platforms in the median of the Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway). The platforms can be accessed using elevators and lifts from Manchester Avenue below the freeway. This station has two parking lots, one or each side of the freeway with a total of 127 spaces. The entrance to the station is provided by stairs and elevators under the freeway. Metro Local line 115 stops directly below the station at the street level (Manchester Avenue). On September 6, 2011, the new stop located directly below the Manchester Silver Line station opened for Metro Local line: 115. The new stop is only for eastbound passengers. A westbound stop for lines 115 was not constructed. The station was upgraded with improved lighting in December 2010. CCTV and next bus trip arrival television screens were added onto the station in December 2012 and the monitors became activated on June 2013.

Greater Manchester Police making 'disproportionate arrests'
An investigation by Channel 4 News has uncovered serious concerns among serving officers at Greater Manchester Police who've told this programme they're taking "unacceptable risks" and that "dozens of inappropriate and disproportionate" arrests are being made every week.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
It comes amid the current Chief Constable's drive to double arrest figures which has been one of the key factors in getting the force out of special measures.

Teen says Greater Manchester police officer throttled him. This is what his friend filmed
Greater Manchester police have launched an internal investigation after a teenager said an officer throttled him following a protest on Saturday. Footage of the incident shows the student pressed against a police van by three officers, one of whom he says held him by his throat. 'I genuinely thought he wanted to kill me,' the student said. 'That’s all I could read from his body language and his eyes and his facial expressions – he just kept squeezing.' The 18-year-old was taken to another police van across the street, searched and detained for breach of the peace before being released.

Dannika Stewart says that she was detained after complaining that an alleged sexual crime committed against a young person was not being investigated properly.
Dannika is a subject of an inquiry by Dame Vera Baird into police strip searches and the treatment of women in custody.
Dannika agreed to tell Sky News her story ahead of the Baird review's publication.
A GMP spokesperson told Sky News: "Greater Manchester Police activity is driven by just three things: to fight, prevent and reduce crime, keep people safe and care for victims. Where we are not successful, we admit our failings and we work transparently within governance and regulatory arrangements to redress what has gone wrong.
"Miss Stewart's complaints continue to be reviewed by Dame Vera Baird and the Professional Standards Directorate. Until these reviews have concluded and reported their findings to Miss Stewart, it wouldn't be right for the force to comment publicly."

A Sky News investigation has revealed allegations of abuse made by three women against Greater Manchester Police.
They say officers conducted unjustified strip searches.
GMP said in a statement one investigation is ongoing but there was "no evidence to suggest any GMP employees have misconducted themselves or committed a criminal offence".
Sky's home editor Jason Farrell talks to Kay Burley about the case.

Among the many damning criticisms in her report last year, Dame Louise Casey described the Met Police as institutionally sexist and misogynistic.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Later this year - a report will be published on another of the UK’s biggest police forces.
Dame Vera Baird is expected to make serious criticisms of Greater Manchester Police over their treatment of women in custody.
But this programme has heard from women who say a wider investigation is needed into the police force.
They say there’s a 'boys club culture' - and raise questions about the way women are treated when they make complaints about the force.

An independent inquiry into the experience of women and girls who are taken into police custody in Greater Manchester has been commissioned following a Sky News investigation.
The inquiry will have a particular focus on the use of strip searches and intimate searches and removal and replacement of clothing.
It will also assess the care given to female detainees as well as how effectively complaints are handled after their release and if there is any inequality between the treatment of men and women.
