The Egyptian Theater is one of the most iconic historical buildings in Hollywood. Sid Grauman looking to draw moviegoers from the theater district in down town Los Angeles, built the first major movie theater on Hollywood Blvd. in 1922.
The Egyptian Theater was constructed for a cost of $800,00 dollars and feature an ancient Egyptian decor influenced by the recent discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1920.
Hieroglyphic murals fill walls along the courtyard and massive columns mark the entry. During the theater's golden age, the forecourt held various animals in cages and staff in Egyptian costumes showed movie goers to their seats.
The Egyptian opened in October of 1922, with Hollywood's first movie premiere for "Robin Hood" staring Douglas Fairbanks. This is where Hollywood as we know it began. With the first star studded movie premiere ever staged.
Sid Grauman invented the movie premiere. Bringing in photographers and search lights, lining the first red carpet with movie fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite Movie Star. The lavish event set the standard of Movie premiere one hundred years ago.
The Egyptian was the first movie theater wired for sound in 1926, adding innovative new technology with pre recorded sound tracks with music and sound effects.
In the 1950's Hollywood introduced wide screen cinema and the Egyptian was equipped with special wide screen projectors and screens to pull audiences away from their new television sets.
Long a favorite of Hollywood, the Egyptian hosted an amazing number of movie premiers from the 1920s to the 1960s featuring some of the biggest movies in motion picture history.
But after years of decline and damage from an earthquake the theater closed its doors and was left empty and abandoned. Threatened with demolition, the Egyptian was restored to its original grander after a $15 million renovation.
Today, the theater hosts new movie premieres and a mix of foreign films, Indies and film festivals in all formats. A hundred years after its first opening, the Egyptian has been returned to its golden age splendor as a culture landmark helping in the rebirth of Hollywood itself.

Lev Konstantinovskiy - Next generation of word embeddings in Gensim
Filmed at PyData London 2017
www.pydata.org
Description
There are many ways to find similar words/docs with an open-source Natural Language processing library Gensim that I maintain. I will give an overview of modern word embeddings like Google's Word2vec, Facebook's FastText, GloVe, WordRank, VarEmbed and discuss what business tasks fit them best.
Abstract
What is the most similar word to "king"? It depends on what you mean by similar. "King" can be interchanged with "Canute", but it's attribute is "crown". We will discuss how to achieve these two kinds of similarity from word embeddings. Also touch on how to deal with the common issues of rare, frequent and out of vocabulary words.

Chris Tanner: Hard NLP Tasks: Determining who is who and what is what | IACS Seminar
Speaker: Chris Tanner, Lecturer, Institute for Applied Computational Science at Harvard University
While natural language processing (NLP) has experienced enormous progress in recent years, some tasks remain incredibly challenging. Namely, Coreference Resolution is a fundamental, unsolved task that attempts to resolve which words in a body of a text all refer to the same underlying "thing" (e.g., entity or event). This serves as an essential component of many other core NLP tasks, including information extraction, question-answering, document summarization, etc. However, decades of research have primarily focused on resolving entities (e.g., people, locations, organizations), with significantly less attention given to events -- the actions performed. In our work, we developed a state-of-t...

We continue our never-ending investigation game by beginning to discuss and analyze Chico's 4th Tape: Interrogation.
PyData is an educational program of NumFOCUS, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the United States. PyData provides a forum for the international community of users and developers of data analysis tools to share ideas and learn from each other. The global PyData network promotes discussion of best practices, new approaches, and emerging technologies for data management, processing, analytics, and visualization. PyData communities approach data science using many languages, including (but not limited to) Python, Julia, and R.
We aim to be an accessible, community-driven conference, with novice to advanced level presentations. PyData tutorials and talks bring attendees the latest project features along with cutting-edge use cases. 00:00 Welcome!

In our work, we developed a state-of-the-art model for event coreference that uses almost no features. Last, we touch on remaining challenges and future directions.

We continue our never-ending investigation game by beginning to discuss and analyze Chico's 4th Tape: Interrogation. Though we don't get very far in the tape itself, I spend a lot of time sketching out some very crucial context and references made by MGSV to the subject of Constantine the Great and Paul the Apostle. We end with a discussion of Neo-totalitarianism in a certain Asian country, and what MGSV's elusiveness may have to do with its status as an anti-totalitarian masterpiece.
0:00-5:28 The Apostle Paul and the Co-Opting of Monotheism
5:28 - 9:37 Constantine the Great and the Co-Opting of the Co-Opting of Monotheism and Pax Romana
9:37 - 14:00 The Plagues of Egypt, the Blood of the Lamb, and Postmodernism
14:00 - 20:34 Skull Face's perversion of logical implication and treatment of Chico as a 'Big Brother'
20:34 - 31:23 A certain Asian country's neo-totalitarianism, the perversion of Truth, and how tyranny learns from history by interpolating it
"It is only by means of forgetfulness that man can ever reach the point of fancying himself to possess a "truth"."
