Princess Elisabeth "Ella" of Hesse and by Rhine (1895--1903)
Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine (Prinzessin Elisabeth Marie Alice Viktoria von Hessen und bei Rhein) ( 11 March 1895 -- 16 November 1903) was the only daughter of Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and his first wife, Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She was named after her paternal great-grandmother, who was born Princess Elisabeth of Prussia. Her paternal aunt, Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine (1864--1918), had the same name and was also nicknamed Ella. Elisabeth's early death was rumored to be a result of poison meant for her uncle, Tsar Nicholas II, but the court physician said she died of virulent typhoid, probably caused by her taking a drink of water from a contaminated stream.

Tragic Ella, Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine
A tribute to the sweet and beautiful little Elisabeth of Hesse. Despite the fact over a century has passed, her tragic death still causes watery eyes, sorrow and pure shock.
Like many dear children of her time, she became the victim of a violent episode typhoid fever. The Russian Court Physician gave her as much caffeine as she could bare to keep her little heart from slowing too critically. She had woken up so suddenly, exclaiming that she new she was about to die and ordered a telegram to be sent to her mother... unfortunately her mother did not receive the telegram until the following morning when her dearest little girl Elisabeth has already died.

Her parents were first cousins, both grandchildren to Queen Victoria (through Princess Alice and Prince Alfred "Affie"). Their marriage was an arranged one and soon the couple started to drift apart and they wanted to divorce, but Queen Victoria would not allow it due to how it might affect their daughter Elisabeth.
When the Queen died in 1901 Ella's parents divorced and shared costody of 6 year old Ella. Ella spent 6 months with each parent at a time. She was very close to her father and blamed her mother for their divorce.
When Ella was 8 years old and was on a trip to visit her Russian cousins (the Romanov family), she fell ill with typhoid fever. On her sick bed, Ella told the governesses to send a telegram to her mother because she thought she was dying. At first the Empress (Ella’s aunt) and Ella’s father didn’t think Ella was severely ill, but as Ella’s condition worsened, the telegram was eventually sent. However, it reached Victoria Melita too late. Ella passed away at just 8 years old in 1903.

She was the sunshine of her father's life, hundreds of civilians gathered for her funeral and sobs could be heard for miles. Even Kaiser Wilhelm II claimed he had never seen so much distraught in a crowd and that "we wept in unison for that darling little girl".
I share her story today to honor the beautiful little soul she carried within. It's a darn shame she didn't grow to be a Queen or Empress. So much potential gone so soon..

Ella was 19 when she and Serge married and she went to Russia. Eventually, after much study, thought and prayer, she decided to become an Orthodox Christian and she was received into the Orthodox Church in 1891. This conversion formally marked what had been a journey of faith as the Grand Duchess embraced Russia, her culture and her peoples and loved them as she loved her husband.
A special video production about the life of Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna, presented by Russian Arts Specialist and writer Sophie Law. Sophie has contributed to the book “The Romanov Royal Martyrs” by working on the chapter on Grand Duchess Elisabeth and a selection of letters by her to Tsar Nicholas II. Most of these letters will be published for the first time in our book.
"The Romanov Royal Martyrs” is an impressive 512-page book, featuring nearly 200 black & white photographs, and a 56-page photo insert of more than 80 high-quality images, colorized by the acclaimed Russian artist Olga Shirnina (Klimbim) and appearing here in print for the first time.

Today, July 18th, is the anniversary of Grand Duchess Elizaveta Feodrovna of Russia's tragic death at the hands of the Bolsheviks in 1918. "Ella" was born in 1864 to Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt and Princess Alice of Great Britain, who was the 3rd daughter of Queen Victoria. In 1884, when Ella was twenty, she married Grand Duke Serge of Russia, who was sadly assassinated in 1905. After her husband's death, the beautiful Grand Duchess renounced all of the splendors and extravagances of court life; founded the Convent of Sts. Martha and Mary in 1909, and became a nun. "To find something good in every person was the goal of all her heart," said one contemporary. "I think from my very childhood, I wanted to help the suffering, and especially those who suffer in their soul..." --Elizabeth Feodrovna
This is a tribute to the artistic, pure soul of Ella of Hesse. Rest in Peace.
(The quote in the end of the video is from a poem written by Grand Duke Serge's assasin, Ivan Kalyaev, about Ella's visit to him in prison.)

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on Tuesday visited Luxembourg, saying the country must play its part in the EU’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Metsola on Tuesday met with Grand Duke Henri, prime minister Xavier Bettel (DP) and foreign affairs minister Jean Asselborn (LSAP), as well as speaking at the Chamber of Deputies during an official state visit.
#Henri #Duke #Metsola #Luxembourg #Palace
“Luxembourg has always played a leading part in championing European integration and European democracy,” Metsola said, from the grand duchy’s role in founding the European Coal and Steel Community to the signing of the Schengen agreement and beyond.
“You and your citizens believe in Europe,” the president said. Speaking 20 days into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she said Luxembourg’s “homes and hearts have been opened to people fleeing war.”
As Europe in the aftermath of WW2 pooled together precious coal and steel resources, Metsola said it is now time to rethink our resources once again and wean the EU off Russian gas, which she said funds bombs “raining down on Ukraine.”
The EU must become more self-reliant, she said, not only on energy but also food security, as well as building a stronger security and defence union. “The threat that we face are real,” Metsola said.
The European Parliament president called for bold and ambitious solutions to the crisis, adding that the EU has already passed unprecedented sanctions packages and stands united with Ukraine. “We are only as big as our ideas.”
Metsola said more aid needs to be channelled to Ukraine and support to countries that have welcomed refugees. But the president also warned that Poland and Hungary would not be exempt from rule of law obligations over their support for fleeing Ukraine.
Rule of law
Poland has taken in around 1.7 million people, with more than 255,000 received in Hungary. Both countries, however, face EU sanctions for refusing to take in refugees as part of a 2015 mechanism aimed at relocating 120,000 refugees over a period of two years.
Both countries had launched a legal challenge against a rule-of-law mechanism that give the European Commission the power to withhold funds for rule of law violations. The European Court of Justice in February dismissed the case, but the EU could now hold back off on blocking Poland and Hungary’s budget as they provide support for refugees from Ukraine.
Still, Metsola said that curbs on press freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights and other rule of law violations wouldn’t be annulled by the country’s humanitarian response to the war in Ukraine.
“We thought ourselves secure in peace. Putin’s invasion has shattered peace in Europe,” she said. “Europeans are experiencing crimes of war,” Metsola said, calling the shelling of a maternity ward and children’s hospital in the eastern city of Mariupol “an act of pure evil.”
She said the EU stands with the people of Ukraine, who have a future in the bloc, but also with those in Russia who are protesting against the war. “They are also on the right side of history.”
