Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia
Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia was born on 18th June 1901. Disappointment at her birth was not hidden by anyone. Anastasia’s mother, Alix of Hesse or Alexandra Feodorovna, as she was known then, was devastated, to have given birth to a fourth daughter. Anastasia’s father, Nicholas, could not hide his disappointment, as he still had no heir after almost seven years, and went for a long walk before visiting his daughter for the first time…

Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov
Anastasia, the youngest daughter, born in 1901, was initially a tomboy and the family clown. She was shorter than the others, had a straight nose and beautiful gray eyes. Refined and witty, she had the talent of a comedienne and made everyone laugh. She was kind and loved animals. She had a small dog of Japanese breed, whom the whole family loved. Anastasia carried this dog in her arms when she went down into the cellar at Ekaterinburg on the fateful night of July 4th, and the little dog was murdered together with her.

The Enigmatic Tale of Anastasia Romanov
In July 1918, the Romanov family, Russia's last royal dynasty, was executed by Bolshevik revolutionaries. Despite the official reports, rumors persisted that Anastasia, the youngest daughter, had survived.
For decades, impostors like Anna Anderson claimed to be Anastasia, captivating the world. In 1991, the Romanovs' remains were found, but Anastasia and her brother Alexei were missing. The mystery deepened.
In 2007, another grave was discovered, and DNA tests confirmed the remains were Alexei and one of his sisters. The legend of Anastasia's escape was finally debunked, yet her story continues to captivate and inspire.

The Children of Nicholas II: Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna
Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Alexei were the five children of the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra Feodrovna. The entire family was tragically wiped out by the Bolsheviks during the first World War after they were imprisoned for a little over a year. In this five part series we will reflect all of their lives separately each Wednesday.

-Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia (Russian: Анастасия Николаевна Романова, romanized: Anastasiya Nikolaevna Romanova; 18 June [O.S. 5 June] 1901 – 17 July 1918) was the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, the last sovereign of Imperial Russia, and his wife, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna.
Anastasia was the younger sister of Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, and Maria, and was the elder sister of Alexei Nikolaevich, Tsarevich of Russia. She was killed with her family by a group of Bolsheviks in Yekaterinburg on 17 July 1918.
Persistent rumors of her possible escape circulated after her death, fueled by the fact that the location of her burial was unknown during the decades of Communist rule. The abandoned mine serving as a mass grave near Yekaterinburg which held the acidified remains of the Tsar, his wife, and three of their daughters was revealed in 1991. These remains were put to rest at Peter and Paul Fortress in 1998. The bodies of Alexei Nikolaevich and the remaining daughter—either Anastasia or her older sister Maria—were discovered in 2007. Her purported survival has been conclusively disproven. Scientific analysis including DNA testing confirmed that the remains are those of the imperial family, showing that all four grand duchesses were killed in 1918.

In this video we take a deep dive into the bedrooms of the four last Grand Duchesses of Russia: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanov. Despite living in a palace, the girls shared bedrooms in pairs, and filled these spaces with photographs, trinkets, and icons. Join me today to find out more about these bedrooms (and their rooms at Tobolsk) from when the Grand Duchesses occupied them, to the Revolution, to today!
