Although he was never on a spaceflight, he served as backup pilot for the mission Gemini 10, which took place in July 1966. Following this mission he was selected to be the Lunar Module Pilot for an Apollo mission to the Moon commanded by Pete Conrad. Following Williams' death, Alan Bean became Lunar Module Pilot for Conrad's mission, which ended up being Apollo 12, the second lunar landing.
Williams began playing French horn, piano, and mellophone early on and played in the band at Little Rock High School. His senior class of 600 voted him as most outstanding in artistry, talent, and versatility.
Williams attended Louisiana State University (B.M., 1947) where he was a pupil of Helen M. Gunderson (1909–1997). He also attended the Eastman School of Music (M.M., 1949) where he studied with Bernard Rogers and Howard Hanson. It was Howard Hanson who led Williams to write for the wind band rather than the orchestra, counseling Williams that he would get larger audiences and a larger range of organizations to perform his music in doing so.
The Grand Canyon Suite is a suite for orchestra by Ferde Grofé, composed between 1929 and 1931. It was initially titled "Five Pictures of the Grand Canyon".
It consists of five movements, each an evocation in tone of a particular scene typical of the Grand Canyon. Paul Whiteman and his orchestra gave the first public performance of the work, in concert at the Studebaker Theatre in Chicago on November 22, 1931.
Structure
The movements of the suite are:
I. Sunrise
II. Painted Desert
III. On the Trail
IV. Sunset
V. Cloudburst
In the conductor's score, the coda to the Cloudburst movement is notated as a separate movement: VI. Distant Thunder with Crickets Chirping.
Influence
The Grand Canyon Suite is featured in the Grand Canyon Diorama on the Disneyland Railroad.

The Sinfonians By Clifton Williams
This is a nice march by Clifton Williams. The piccolo solo is especially noticeable :-) This march is unusual because it is in 4/4 time. Performed by the US Air Force Tactical Air Command Band.

If I was the Grand Canyon I'd echo everything you say but I'm just me I'm only me and you used to love me that way so you know how to love me that way If I was Paul Bunyan I'd carry you so far away but I'm just me I'm only me and you used to love me that way so you know how to love me that way
