Ferde Grofé (27 March 1892 – 3 April 1972) was an American composer, arranger and pianist. During the 1920s and 1930s, he went by the name Ferdie Grofé. Grofé is best known for his composition of the Grand Canyon Suite (1931), a work regarded highly enough to be recorded for RCA Victor with the NBC Symphony conducted by Arturo Toscanini (in Carnegie Hall in 1945, with the composer present). The earlier Mississippi Suite is also occasionally performed and recorded. Originally a ballet, Grofé extracted the music heard here for a six-movement suite. This is light (I might even say frivolous) music, but it's fun all the same. Rip Van Winkle An orchestral suite by the American composer and arranger Ferde Grofé (1892-1972), best known for his collaboration with the Paul Whiteman orchestra in the 1920's. The Hudson River Suite consists of a series of tableaux depicting the river, its environs, its history and folklore, and its passage through New York City. Grofé had been working on a tone poem called Rip Van Winkle, after the story by Washington Irving, but rather than finishing it as a stand-alone work, he included it as the third movement of this suite.
