Gotland (/ˈɡɒtlənd/; Swedish pronunciation:[ˈɡɔtland], older spellings include Gottland/ˈɡɒtlənd/ or Gothland/ˈɡɒθlənd/,), Gutland in the local language Gutnish, is a province, county, municipality, and diocese of Sweden. It is Sweden's largest island. The province includes the small islands of Fårö and Gotska Sandön to the north, as well as the even smaller Karlsö Islands (Lilla and Stora) to the west. The population is 57,221, of which about 23,600 live in Visby, the main town. The island of Gotland and the other areas of the province of Gotland make up less than one percent of Sweden's total land area.
The island's main sources of income are agriculture along with food processing, tourism, IT solutions, design, and some heavy industry such as concrete production from locally mined limestone. From a military viewpoint, it occupies a strategic location in the Baltic sea.
History
The island is the home of the Gutes (the tribal name of the Gotlandic people), and sites such as Ajvide show that it has been occupied since prehistory. A DNA study conducted on the 5,000-year-old skeletal remains of three Middle Neolithic seal hunters from Gotland showed that they were related to modern-day Finns, while a farmer from Gökhem parish in Västergötland on the mainland was found to be more closely related to modern-day Mediterraneans. This is consistent with the spread of agricultural peoples from the Middle East at about that time.
Gotland pony or Gotland russ is an old Swedishpony breed. Gotland ponies are claimed to descend from Tarpans that lived on the small island of Gotland that is on the South-Eastern coast of Sweden right after the last ice age. The Gotland pony is the only breed of pony native to Sweden. The Öland horse from the neighbouring island of Öland was a close relative of the Gotland, but went extinct in the early 20th century.
Characteristics
The Gotland Russ has a light and narrow build with sloping quarters and a low-set tail. Their hooves are solid and hard. This pony generally stands from 115 to 130 centimetres (11.1 to 12.3 hands; 45 to 51in) at the withers and is ideally between 123–126 centimetres (12.0–12.2 hands; 48–50in). Three-year-old ponies must be 115–128 centimetres (11.1–12.2 hands; 45–50in). The pony is strong and hardy, and can be ridden by children and small adults.

Gotland is Sweden's largest island. It is also a province, county, municipality, and diocese. The province includes the islands of Fårö and Gotska Sandön to the north, as well as the Karlsö Islands (Lilla and Stora) to the west.
Visby is the main town in Gotland total land area.
The county formed by the archipelago is the second smallest by area and is the least populated in Sweden. In spite of the small size due to its narrow width, the driving distance between the furthermost points of the populated islands is about 170 kilometers.
Gotland is a fully integrated part of Sweden with no particular autonomy, unlike several other offshore island groups in Europe. Historically there was a linguistic difference between the archipelago and the mainland with Gutnish being the native language....

Sweden joined NATO earlier this month, becoming the 32nd member of the military alliance. Around the Baltic Sea, nations are worried about what Russian President Vladimir Putin could do next after he showed he was capable of invading neighbour Ukraine. Sweden has officially put an end to its traditional neutrality and its prime minister has even told his people they need to be prepared for war. Military service was already reintroduced back in 2018. Our reporters Clovis Casali and Julien Sauvaget went to the Swedish island of Gotland, deemed the most strategic location in the Baltic Sea.

Gotland: Visby’s Last Stand | Medieval Dead | Timeline
Midsummer 1361. In Gotland, Sweden King Valdemar and his Danish army attack the walled town of Visby. While the town’s rich merchants look on, a hastily recruited army of feudal peasants is quite literally cut to pieces by the Danes right outside the main gates. 1800 of the townsfolk are killed in the most brutal and clinical way.
In 1905 the first mass grave at Visby was found and so far more than 1185 bodies have been recovered – many more are awaiting excavation. In this episode, Tim Sutherland – a battle expert and one of the country’s foremost medieval archaeologists – travels to the battle site to unearth the chilling story of the Gotland Militia. Malin Holst inspects the extraordinary collection of bones found buried outside Visby, many of which were buried in full armour – somethi...

I am Grace on Tour and travel has been my biggest passion ever since I can remember. My very first international trip was done two weeks after I was born. In the summer of 2018 I started posting on this channel as I set off on a trip around Asia before studying a semester in Taiwan. During this time my love for travel grew and I tried to travel to new places during my weekends off from university. Throughout uni I made travel a priority and worked multiple side jobs to fund my travels. After doing my thesis in Hong Kong I graduated in June 2019. At this point I decided to take a gap year and go traveling. My goal was to visit as many countries as possible. I soon realized that travel is what I love and wan´t to keep on doing.

Malin Holst inspects the extraordinary collection of bones found buried outside Visby, many of which were buried in full armour – something that was almost unheard of at the time. And the team searches for the ‘Fourth Grave Pit- of Visby legend – can they locate the site?

I now dream of visiting every country in the world.
