The Kūhistoni Badakhshon Autonomous Region (Tajik:Вилояти Мухтори Кӯҳистони Бадахшон, Viloyati Mukhtori Kūhistoni Badakhshon; also known as Gorno-Badakhshan, after Russian:Горно-Бадахшанская автономная область, Gorno-Badakhšanskaya avtonomnaya oblast’) is an autonomous region in eastern Tajikistan.
Located in the Pamir Mountains, it makes up 45% of the land area of the country but only 3% of its population.
History
Prior to 1895, the area of today's Gorno-Badakhshan A.R. consisted of several semi-self governing statelets, including Darwaz, Shughnun-Rushan, and Wakhan, who ruled over territories that today are part of Gorno-Badakhshan A.R. in Tajikistan and Badakhshan Province in Afghanistan. The territory was claimed by the Chinese and Russian empires and the Emirate of Afghanistan. The Qing rulers of China claimed control of the entire Pamir Mountains, but Qing military units only controlled the passes just east of Tashkorgan Town. In the 1890s, the Chinese, Russian, and Afghan governments signed a series of agreements that divided Badakhshan, but the Chinese continued to contest these borders, until it signed a 2002 agreement with the government of Tajikistan. The Republic of China continues to claim the territory as part of its land area, along with the rest of China.

The people of Tajikistan's semi-autonomous region of Gorno-Badakhshan have their own distinct culture, language and identity, and they have resisted the authority of the Chinese, British, and Russians in the past.
The government in Dushanbe faces the same problem, after demonstrations for better infrastructure and jobs in September brought the army and a crackdown on dissent.

Analysts have said that President Emomali Rahmon is aware of the risks, but critics worry that unrest may again be coming to the region the makes up nearly half Tajikistan's geographical size.
Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford reports from Khorog where the army was sent in after protests earlier this year.

The Pamiris, the native inhabitants the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region in eastern Tajikistan, have been the target of a relentless crackdown since violence sparked by government security forces broke out there in May. In November alone, at least 15 Pamiris were given long prison sentences, with five sentenced to life in prison. Two of the region's four registered lawyers are about to go on trial, behind closed doors, and they also face long prison sentences. Joining host Bruce Pannier to discuss the topic are Suzanne Levi-Sanchez, author of the book Bridging State And Civil Society: Informal Organizations In Tajik/Afghan Badakhshan; and Bakhtiyor Safarov, founder of Central Asia Consulting in the United States, who is originally from Gorno-Badakhshan.

Gorno-Badakhshan is a unique region in Tajikistan. People there are distinct from ethnic Tajiks and have lived in the remote mountains of the region for centuries. There have been conflicts there before, some recently, and now people are wondering if fighting is set to break out again.

In mid-May 2022, the Tajik government initiated a brutal crackdown on the people of eastern Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan region: the Pamiris. Pamiris are ethnically and culturally distinct from Tajiks; and unlike most Tajiks who are Sunni Muslims, Pamiris are Shi’ite. Dozens of Pamiris have been killed, more than 100 imprisoned, and over the course of the last year, there has been a systematic destruction of Pamiri culture in Gorno-Badakhshan. Joining host Bruce Pannier to look at the repressive targeting of Pamiris are guests Suzanne Levi-Sanchez, author of the book Bridging State And Civil Society: Informal Organizations In Tajik/Afghan Badakhshan and Bakhtiyor Safarov, founder of Central Asia Consulting in the United States, who is originally from Gorno-Badakhshan.

The Wakhan Corridor is the narrow strip of territory located within the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan. This corridor stretches eastward, connecting Afghanistan to Xinjiang, China. It also separates the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan in the north from the northern regions of Pakistan in the south. The Wakhan Valley also includes the slopes and peaks on the northern side of the Panj river, in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) in Tajikistan. We travelled by 4WD vehicle from Khorog (capital of GBAP) through this valley, which is populated by Pamiri and Wakhi people. In addition to the gorgeous landscapes of Tajikistan are views beyond, to the south, including the Wakhan corridor in Afghanistan and the high peaks that constitute the border with Pakistan.
