Spain also controls the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean. One of the balearic islands is called Ibiza, which is a renown part destination.
Spain also controls the Canary Islands in the
Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Morocco and the cities of Ceuta and Mellia in North Africa.
The Autonomous communities of Spain can sometimes have powers that even exceed states in federations, such as collecting the taxes instead of the central government doing it. As well some of the communities have distinct nationalities and languages such as Catalan, Galician, and Basque.
This situation arose because before the reconquista of the iberian peninsula, the northern christian kingdoms were separated and this allowed different languages to develop.
However, Spain is extremely careful to make sure its communities cannot federalize because it wants to remain an indivisible single state, and being a federation means its easier to separate it apart.
After spain transition to democracy the consitution said that autonomous communities could form with the choice of some powers in a list. This is similar to a federation, but important distinctions is that the communities have no say in reforming the constitution, the consitution itself does not establish or give these powers to the communities and is instead done by a statute of autonomy which is legislation from the central Spanish government.

Context:
-Galicia: its culture has some Celtic elements, but it isn’t considered one of the Celtic Nations.
-Asturias & Cantabria: the north of Spain is known for its frequent precipitations. Also, they are toasting with cider, a typical drink in Asturias.
-Basque Country: search about ETA, I don’t want to explain it.
-Navarre: it’s known for the Sanfermines and for its stories about witches, but I didn’t know how to draw any of these.
-Aragon: the Kingdom of Aragon could be considered predecessor of both equally, but Catalonia designed its flag first and Aragon had use its coat to avoid confusion.
-La Rioja: the only thing it’s known for is its wine.
-Catalonia: it’s a place with many protests especially in Barcelona, where the Mossos d’Esquadra (the police of Catalonia) have to intervene.
-The two Castiles: they are very peaceful and rural places, where not much happens.
-Balearic Islands: many German tourists come there.
-Community of Madrid: in the city of Madrid the best quality water in all of Spain can be found and in the city of Valencia there is the worst quality water,
-Community of Murcia: the Valencian have a very specific criteria to determine what’s a paella whereas in the rest of Spain a paella is just anything with dry rice.
-Region of Murcia: it’s recurring to say that “Murcia doesn’t exist” as a joke, just like Paraguay or Wyoming. This could be the result of Murcia being overshadowed by other communities as Valencia or Andalusia.
-Extremadura: other recurrent joke is that “Extremadura has no railroads”. As far as I know, Extremadura has some secondary railroads but not any high speed ones.
-Andalusia: as it is the most southern community in the Peninsula, it’s also the hottest (not in the way you are thinking) community, especially in summer.
Ceuta & Melilla: Morocco claims these two autonomous cities, for that reason there are some “situations” in the border with Morocco.
Canary Islands: they are called the Hawaii of Spain and are known for its bananas.
The dust thing, it refers to that during the eruption of the volcano in La Palma its ashes fell on the ground of the island.
Contexto:

Contexto:

Political Poems: W.H. Auden's 'Spain 1937'
In their second episode, Mark and Seamus look at W.H. Auden's, ‘Spain’. Auden travelled to Spain in January 1937 to support the Republican efforts in the civil war, and composed the poem shortly after his return a few months later to raise money for Medical Aid for Spain. It became a rallying cry in the fight against fascism, but was also heavily criticised, not least by George Orwell, for the phrase (in its first version) of ‘necessary murder’. Mark and Seamus discuss the poem’s Marxist presentation of history, its distinctly non-Marxist language, and why Auden ultimately condemned it as ‘a lie’.
Mark Ford is Professor of English at University College, London, and Seamus Perry is Professor of English Literature at Balliol College, Oxford.

The Spanish Civil War & Literature: Orwell, Auden, Eliot and Hemingway
In this video, I look at how the Spanish Civil War shaped the literature of the modernist movement. George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway both visited Spain during the war, and T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden asked questions about a poet's duty in the modern world.

22. W. H. Auden
Modern Poetry (ENGL 310) with Langdon Hammer
This lecture presents the early poetry of W.H. Auden. In "From the Very First Coming Down," Auden's relationship to the reader is considered, as well as the role of economy, truth, and morality in his poetics. The political Auden is examined in "Spain" and "September 1, 1939," along with his later practice of revising controversial poems. Finally, his interest in traditional forms, his vision of love, and his characteristic perspectivism, are explored in "This Lunar Beauty" and "As I Walked Out One Evening."

Poetry: September 1, 1939 by W. H. Auden ‖ Michael Sheen
"September 1, 1939" by W. H. Auden
I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentionable odour of death
Offends the September night.
Accurate scholarship can
Unearth the whole offence
From Luther until now
That has driven a culture mad,
Find what occurred at Linz,
What huge imago made
A psychopathic god:
I and the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those to whom evil is done
Do evil in return.
Exiled Thucydides knew
All that a speech can say
About Democracy,
And what dictators do,
The elderly rubbish they talk
To an apathetic grave;
Analysed all in his book,
The enlightenment driven...

"Funeral Blues" by W.H. Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message 'He is Dead'.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every...

The Poets of the 1930s #thepoetsofthe1930s #englishliterature #ugcnet #upsc #macspaunday #audengroup
In this video, we will talk about the Poets of the 1930s.
The term 'Poets of the 1930s' refers to a group of British and Irish poets in the Thirties such as W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Louis MacNeice, Cecil Day Lewis, Christopher Isherwood, Edward Upward and Rex Warner.
They were also known as the Auden Group or the Auden Generation after the most prominent poet of the Thirties, W. H. Auden. Poet critic Roy Campbell, in his 1946 book Talking Bronco coined the name "MacSpaunday" to designate a group comprising of the four poets of the Thirties. These four poets are--
Louis MacNeice ("Mac")
Stephen Spender ("sp")
W.H. Auden ("au-n")
Cecil Day Lewis ("day")
Later on, the term "MacSpaunday" was occasionally used as a synonym for the "Thirties poets".
These poets of the Thirties such as W....

"September 1, 1939" by W. H. Auden
I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentionable odour of death
Offends the September night.
Accurate scholarship can
Unearth the whole offence
From Luther until now
That has driven a culture mad,
Find what occurred at Linz,
What huge imago made
A psychopathic god:
I and the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those to whom evil is done
Do evil in return.
Exiled Thucydides knew
All that a speech can say
About Democracy,
And what dictators do,
The elderly rubbish they talk
To an apathetic grave;
Analysed all in his book,
The enlightenment driven away,
The habit-forming pain,
Mismanagement and grief:
We must suffer them all again.
Into this neutral air
Where blind skyscrapers use
Their full height to proclaim
The strength of Collective Man,
Each language pours its vain
Competitive excuse:
But who can live for long
In an euphoric dream;
Out of the mirror they stare,
Imperialism's face
And the international wrong.
Faces along the bar
Cling to their average day:
The lights must never go out,
The music must always play,
All the conventions conspire
To make this fort assume
The furniture of home;
Lest we should see where we are,
Lost in a haunted wood,
Children afraid of the night
Who have never been happy or good.
The windiest militant trash
Important Persons shout
Is not so crude as our wish:
What mad Nijinsky wrote
About Diaghilev
Is true of the normal heart;
For the error bred in the bone
Of each woman and each man
Craves what it cannot have,
Not universal love
But to be loved alone.
From the conservative dark
Into the ethical life
The dense commuters come,
Repeating their morning vow;
"I will be true to the wife,
I'll concentrate more on my work,"
And helpless governors wake
To resume their compulsory game:
Who can release them now,
Who can reach the deaf,
Who can speak for the dumb?
All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual man-in-the-street
And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die.
Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

These poets of the Thirties such as W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Christopher Isherwood, Louis MacNeice and Cecil Day Lewis were sometimes also referred to as the Oxford Poets as they were all Oxford graduates and were known to each other.
There is another name by which these poets of the 1930s were known and that is-- "Pylon Poets".
"The Pylons" is a poem by Stephen Spender and it perfectly reflects the political and social concerns of its members. The Pylon Poets were-- W.H. Auden, Cecil Day Lewis, Louis MacNeice, Stephen Spender and Christopher Isherwood. So the poets of the 1930s are known by different names, such as--
1. The Auden Group/The Auden Generation
2. MacSpaunday
3. The Oxford Poets and
4. The Pylon Poets.
Please don't get confused between the Oxford Poets and the Oxford Movement. The Oxford Movement was a 19th century religious movement that centered at the University of Oxford and it sought to bring spiritual renewal within the Church of England. On the other hand, the Oxford Poets were the poets of the 1930s such as W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Christopher Isherwood, Louis MacNeice and Cecil Day Lewis.
Along with an introduction to the Poets of the Thirties, you will find insights on the social, political and economic background of the 1930s, characteristics of the Poets of the Thirties and a detailed discussion of some of the representative poems of the Thirties. These will definitely help you if you are a student of English literature and preparing for your Undergraduation/Post Graduation/UGC NET- JRF/ SET. If you are an IAS aspirant and want to opt for English literature as your optional subject, then this video is made for you.
