Giant Robo, or(ジャイアントロボ,Jaianto Robo), is a manga and tokusatsu series created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama. It is similar to Yokoyama's Tetsujin 28-go (known as Gigantor in the US), but Giant Robo has more elements of fantasy.
The original 26-episode tokusatsu TV series, produced by the Toei Company, aired on NET (later renamed TV Asahi) from October 11, 1967 to April 1, 1968. The English-dubbed version of the series, developed by Reuben Guberman for American television, was produced by American International Television and directed by Manuel San Fernando (with Salvatore Billitteri as line producer) as Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot.
Plot
Earth is invaded by an interstellar terrorist group, Big Fire (the Gargoyle Gang in the English version), led by Emperor Guillotine. Guillotine spends most of his time in a multicolored space ship hidden at the bottom of an Earth ocean, from which he issues his orders.
The group captures scientists to create an army of monsters to rampage on Earth. A boy, Daisaku Kusama (Johnny Sokko), and a young man named Jūrō Minami (Jerry Mano, a member of the secret peacekeeping organization Unicorn) are shipwrecked on an island after their ship is attacked by Dracolon (a sea monster) and captured by Big Fire. They end up in an elevator leading to a complex where a Pharaoh-like robot is being built by captive scientist Lucius Guardian, who gives Daisaku and Jūrō its control device. Guardian helps them escape before he is shot to death; before he dies, he triggers an atomic bomb which destroys the base. The explosion activates the robot, which obeys Daisaku. The boy is invited by Jūrō and his chief, Azuma, to join Unicorn and fight Big Fire with Giant Robot.
Giant Robo(ジャイアントロボ,Jaianto Robo) is a manga by Mitsuteru Yokoyama, in which the huge robot of the same name as the title appears. Tokusatsu, Anime, etc. based on this manga were produced.
Since Toei requested a plot for Tokusatsu TV series from Yokoyama, he wrote this manga. Yokoyama made the setting "Giant Robo follows only a hero" for differentiation with his Tetsujin 28 which everyone can control.
Plot
Part 1
The secret society "Big Fire" scheming to conquer the world is furthering Project GR. The special investigation organization of the United Nations dispatches an agent in Country T to interfere with the plan. Daisaku Kusama, a Japanese tourist, is mistaken for the agent, and is abducted by "BF".
Part 2
Daisaku Kusama comes back barely alive to Japan with Secret Agent Azuma with GR1. However, "BF" plans an attempt on Daisaku's life to recapture GR1, and they let GR2 and GR3 attack Tokyo.
Part 3
A bomber carrying a hydrogen bomb crashes into Japanese waters. The hydrogen bomb has already been recovered by "BF" though the bomber is recovered at once. "BF" demands that GR1 should be exchanged for a hydrogen bomb.
Giant Robo is a homage to Yokoyama's career. The series features characters and plotlines from the manga artist's entire canon of work, effectively creating an all-new story. The events take place in the near future, ten years after the advent of the Shizuma Drive triggers the third energy revolution. The series follows the master of the titular Robo, Daisaku Kusama, and the Experts of Justice, an international police organization locked in battle with the BF Group, a secret society hell-bent on world domination.
The OVA is recognized for its "retro" style and operatic score. The character designs emulate Yokoyama's drawing style, and the action setpieces are influenced by Hong Kong action cinema, specifically the new school of wuxia and the 1970s kung fu wave.
Giant Robot emotes such great memories for many of us. Cheesy for sure, but holds a special place in our hearts

According to the Daniels, there was no other choice for the photo shoot tribute to the campy Japanese genre Tokusatsu, which blessed us with such cinema icons as Godzilla, Mothra and GiantRobo.
