In November 1969, Prince Philip caused controversy by claiming that the monarchy was on the verge of going broke. Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press, the Duke of Edinburgh was asked about reports that the Royal Family's was facing financial trouble. In response, the prince replied half-jokingly that the Royal Family would be "going into the red next year". He described earnestly how he had been forced to sell a yacht and faced the prospect of having to give up polo.
His comments were inevitably met with derision from some quarters as the subject of the value and cost of the monarchy became a subject of widespread debate.
