Garforth owes its size to expansion in the 17th and 18th centuries during which the local land-owning Gascoigne family ran several coalmines in the area. The surrounding settlements of Micklefield, Kippax, Swillington, Methley and Allerton Bywater Great and Little Preston are all villages that prospered and grew as a result of the coal industry. Nowadays manufacturing and motor-vehicle repair account for more than a third of the workforce in the area
William and his father Edmund Garforth, of Garforth House in York and Wiganthorpe Hall in Terrington (both houses which John Carr (architect) worked on.
Join me for a walk around the town of Garforth, located just a few miles east of central Leeds. Today a commuter town for the big city beside it, Garforth has a long history, with coal mining the biggest driver of growth in the town during the Industrial Revolution.
On our walk, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including The Miners Bar & Kitchen, Main Street, Garforth Miners' Welfare Hall, Garforth Library, Barleyhill Recreation Ground and Garforth Working Mens' Club.

Train Numbers – e.g. 43032 or 800110 – These are train numbers which are specific to that train. No trains can be numbered the same. Locos are 5 digit numbers where the first two numbers are the class of train e.g. 67010 would be a class 67. Multiple Units are 6 digit numbers where the first three numbers are the class of train e.g. 390154 would be a class 390. Click Here to learn more

Headcodes – e.g. 1F32 or 5M00 – These are used by the railway signallers to determine where trains are on the network. Every train within a region has a specific four code ID. Click Here to learn more

Set Number – e.g. WB64 or NL04 – These are semi-permanent loco hauled coach formations which are kept together for formalities. The first two letters usually indicate the maintenance depot responsible e.g. OC is Old Oak Common, LA is Laira. The number indicates the rake number.

Thank you to the following sites which really helped me out in my research about Garforth:

A game in the Northern Counties East Football League saw three consecutive cards shown by the referee. Garforth Town were playing against Bridlington when the home side's Alex Low made a late tackle on one of the Bridlington players. The referee played the advantage before Low made another sliding challenge further down the pitch. After the referee blew his whistle, he brandished two yellow cards at Low before adding a red. The game ended 1-1

Award-winning Indian restaurant Aagrah has expanded its offering in Garforth - check out the amazing buffet and local beer in this news report filmed and edited by FrontRowLive.

Catch me a shooting star, I need to hear some good news, Streetlight keeps calling me, into the shadows with you, I'll lie awake 'til, sweet morning breaks in my heart, I'll lie and wonder when lightning and thunder will pass, So I'm leaving coherent thoughts behind, I'm counting the hours, 'til I'm by your side, And I don't wanna feel, this weight on my shoulders, I'm hoping it ain't hopeless. Meet me at the parking lot, and we can both drive to the moon, You can be dynamite, and honey, I'll be the fuse, I'll lie awake 'til you fall asleep in my arms, One parting kiss and I'm already missing you now. So I'm leaving coherent thoughts behind, I'm counting the hours, 'til I'm by your side, And I don't wanna feel, this weight on my shoulders, I'm hoping it ain't hopeless. I'll lie awake 'til, sweet morning breaks in my heart, I'll lie and wonder when lightning and thunder will pass, So I'm leaving coherent thoughts behind, I'm counting the hours, 'til I'm by your side, And I don't wanna feel, this weight on my shoulders, I'm hoping it ain't hopeless.
