Elmet and Rothwell is a constituency in West Yorkshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since its creation in 2010 by Alec Shelbrooke, a Conservative. In the 2015 General Election, Elmet & Rothwell recorded the largest turnout of any seat in West or South Yorkshire, with nearly 58,000 electors casting a vote.
Situated to the east of Leeds is the seat of Elmet and Rothwell in West Yorkshire. The constituency is named after the town of Rothwell and the ancient British Celtic kingdom of Elmet. The market town of Wetherby and the suburb communities of Garforth, Rothwell and Kippax have largely become commuter towns for Leeds.
Elmet was an independent Brittonic kingdom covering a region of what later became the West Riding of Yorkshire in the Early Middle Ages, between about the 5th century and early 7th century. Although its precise borders are unclear, it appears to have been bounded by the River Sheaf in the south and the River Wharfe in the east. It adjoined Deira to the north and Mercia to the south, and its western boundary appears to have been near Craven, which was possibly a minor British kingdom. As such it was well to the east of other territories of the Britons in Wales and the West Country (i.e.Cornwall and Dumnonia), and to the south of those in the Hen Ogledd or Old North. As one of the southeasternmost Brittonic regions for which there is reasonably substantial evidence, it is notable for having survived relatively late in the period of Anglo-Saxon conquest.
The City of Leeds wards of Barwick and Kippax, Garforth and Swillington, Wetherby, and Whinmoor.
The constituency was created in 1983 to cover the far eastern wards of Leeds and neighbouring areas, notably Wetherby, Barwick-in-Elmet, Kippax, Garforth and Swillington. It also includes the Whinmoor area of east Leeds. Initially the Boundary Commission for England proposed calling the constituency Leeds East, with the existing Leeds East constituency being renamed Leeds East Central. This was opposed during local enquiries where the seat was instead named for the ancient kingdom of Elmet although it covers a significantly smaller area. Wetherby and Garforth are the largest settlements in the constituency.
Why are there Welsh words in Yorkshire place names? (Brittonic/Brythonic place names)

The Old North: British Celtic Kingdoms in the North of England (Hen Ogledd)
Before the Romans arrived and conquered Britain in the 1st century AD, and after they were sent packing in the 5th century AD, the Britons lived in the lands we now divide into England, Scotland and Wales. Most of the time in our modern view of history we consign these "Celtic" peoples to Scotland, Wales and Cornwall after the Anglo-Saxon Invasion, ignoring the existence of independent British kingdoms that continued to hold out against the invaders for hundreds of years. While those in the south were soon swamped by the newly arrived Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians, a swathe of land from the Dee to the Clyde was known as the Hen Ogledd, the Old North, and remained a bastion of British resistance right up until the Norse arrived in the 8th century. The legacy of these northern Britons ...

Roman woman found? but it's the kingdom of Elmet!
Another Classic! Denial of the Britons in modern mainstream archelogy.
Article from the BBC today describing an archaeological dig in modern day Yorkshire where they found graves from around 400ad. The article describes the find as Roman, not British or no mention of the Britons, but goes on to describe how the discovery will allow them to find out about the kingdom on Elmet without mentioning the britons! Elmet was a British kingdom of the old north,Hen Ogledd!

This Summer, meet the residents of Element City
Watch the new trailer for Disney and Pixar’s #Elemental and see the movie in 3D, only in theaters June 16!
Check out a brand-new trailer for Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental,” an all-new original feature film that transports moviegoers to an extraordinary place called Element City, where a host of elements live and work. The trailer showcases each element—air, earth, water and fire—and what sets them apart according to Ember, a quick-witted and fiery woman who’s always stayed close to home in Firetown. In “Elemental,” which opens in theaters on June 16, she finally ventures out of her comfort zone to explore this spectacular world born from the imaginations of Pixar’s filmmakers and specifically crafted for the big-screen experience. Element City is inspired by big cities around the globe and embraces theorized contributions from each elemental community—from giant pine-tree-like buildings and waterfall skyscrapers to a tornado-shaped arena called Cyclone Stadium.
Joining the previously announced voice cast including Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade, respectively, are Ronnie del Carmen as Ember’s soon-to-be retired dad, Bernie; Shila Ommi as Ember’s love-seeking mom, Cinder; Wendi McLendon-Covey as Wade’s stormy and Air-Ball-loving boss, Gale; Catherine O’Hara as Wade’s welcoming mom, Brook; Mason Wertheimer as Ember’s admiring earth neighbor, Clod; and Joe Pera as an overgrown city bureaucrat, Fern.
Directed by Peter Sohn, produced by Denise Ream, p.g.a., and executive produced by Pete Docter, “Elemental” features a screenplay by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh with story by Sohn, Hoberg & Likkel and Hsueh. The film’s original score was composed and conducted by Thomas Newman.

Apologies for the bad Welsh pronunciation!
This video has gained a lot of views recently, so I want to let everyone know that I'm aware of how amateurish and poorly made it seems. I made it quite a few years ago, and I've improved so much as a historian and video maker since then. Please make sure to watch my more newer videos to see for yourself!
The legacy of these northern Britons of the Gododdin, Strathclyde, Rheged, Cumbria and Elmet can still be seen all around us in the north, from the dialects, place names and archaeology to the culture itself.
