Garfield Park is a 128-acre (52ha) regional city park in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Established in the late 19th century, it is the oldest city park in Indianapolis and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The park is located at the confluence of Pleasant Run and Bean Creeks on the near Southside of Indianapolis. The 10,000-square-foot (930m2)Conservatory and Sunken Gardens are located in the eastern portion of the park. The noted landscape architect George Edward Kessler designed the Sunken Gardens along with many of the other features of the park as part of his Park and Boulevard Plan for the city.
Geography
Garfield Park is bounded by Raymond Street on the north; South Garfield Drive, East Garfield Drive, and Shelby Street on the east; Southern Avenue on the south; and the Louisville and Indiana Railroad tracks on the west. Emmerich Manual High School lies directly to the west on the other side of the railroad track embankment.
Much of the park is rolling fields, due at least in part to its location at the confluence of Pleasant Run and Bean Creeks. Pleasant Run enters the park from the north and flows southwest before exiting on the west. Bean Creek enters from the south near Shelby Street and flows northwest until joining Pleasant Run. Seven bridges span the streams within the park; three of them are for pedestrians only. The oldest of these bridges are constructed of limestone.
The first 40 acres (160,000m2) segment of Garfield Park was formally opened to the public in August 1874. Originally known as Central Park, it was conceived as the centerpiece of the West Park System.
Jenney, now best known as the father of skyscrapers, was influenced by the French parks and boulevards he had seen and studied while living in Paris. That influence is reflected in his design of these Westside parks and the connecting boulevards. The park was renamed in 1881 in honor of slain PresidentJames A. Garfield.
In 1905, Jens Jensen, now known as the Dean of Prairie-style landscape architecture, was appointed as the superintendent of the West Park System where he experimented with design ideas and improvements to the deteriorated and unfinished sections of Garfield Park. Some of the most notable areas are the existing lawns which became the setting for development of the Prairie style of landscape architecture. His most notable work in Garfield Park can be seen in the formal flower garden south of Madison Street where he combined Prairie style elements with traditional formal elements and in the Conservatory.
Indianapolis was a New Zealand bred Standardbred racehorse. He is notable in that he won three New Zealand Trotting Cup races, the richest harness race, and sometimes the richest horse race in New Zealand. Indianapolis was one of two horses to win the NZ Trotting Cup three times, the other being False Step. He held the world record for a three-year-old, a record which stood for 14 years.
He was a brother to Tondeleyo (a notable taproot dam) and Miraculous (contested two Inter Dominion heats, sire) and was a half-brother to the sire, Red Raider.

The Story of the Deadliest Shark Attack in US History
If you've seen Jaws, then you know the basics about the tragic descent of the USS Indianapolis. Considered one of the most grievous disasters in the history of the American Navy, it saw the sinking of a US heavy cruiser towards the end of WWII and the gruesome loss of a majority of its crew. If the Japanese strike had been carried out just a few days earlier, the crew might not have been able to deliver materials for the first working atomic bomb, Little Boy.

The caller said a man matching Qualls' description was on her front porch waving a gun and making threats. Officers buck and flick arrived at the 911 caller's home to find Qualls on the porch. Officer flick was the first to approach and can be heard telling Qualls to put his "Hands Up".
When officer Flick stepped onto the porch, Qualls was sitting in a chair and holding a gun in his right hand. Qualls raised the gun and pointed it at officer Flick. Officer Flick discharged his service weapon followed by officer Buck. The Firearm slid across the patio floor. Officers waited for additional assistance before approaching Qualls. As officer #3 approached the home, Qualls' firearm was visible on the patio stairs. The preliminary investigation indicates damage to the magazine was caused by a round from one of the officers. The impact caused Qualls to lose possession of the firearm which then landed on the stairs. Officers secured Qualls and began medical aid until the arrival of Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services. Qualls was transported to Methodist Hospital where he later died. No officers or uninvolved citizens were injured in this incident.

Indianapolis, Indiana — On May 2, 2024, just after 2:00 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) received a 911 call regarding a man waving a gun and threatening to shoot people near a housing complex in the 600 block of East 38th Street. Security camera video captured the man, later identified as 35-year-old Lemar Qualls walking around the perimeter of the housing complex. Responding IMPD officers received an update from dispatch regarding an additional 911 caller in the 3900 block of Broadway Street.
