In 1967, during the Vietnam War, a group of new U.S. Marine Corps recruits arrive at Parris Island, South Carolina, for basic training. After having their heads shaved, they meet Senior Drill InstructorGunnery Sergeant Hartman, who employs excessively forceful methods to turn the recruits into hardened, combat-ready Marines. Among the recruits are privates "Joker", "Cowboy", and the overweight, bumbling Leonard Lawrence, who earns the nickname "Gomer Pyle" after attracting Hartman's wrath.
A full metal jacket (FMJ) bullet is a small-arms projectile consisting of a soft core (often lead) encased in a shell of harder metal, such as gilding metal, cupronickel, or less commonly a steel alloy. In military nomenclature, it is often labelled "Ball" ammunition.
The use of full metal jacketing in military ammunition came about because of the need for improved feeding characteristics in small arms using internal mechanical manipulation of the cartridge to chamber rounds as opposed to externally hand-reloading single-shot firearms. The harder gilding was less prone to deformation than softer exposed lead, which improved feeding. It is often thought that military use of FMJ ammunition was the result of The Hague Convention of 1899, Declaration III, prohibiting the use in international warfare of bullets that easily expand or flatten in the body, but this only addresses that projectiles must not be designed to flatten or expand, not that they be jacketed. Jacketed bullets had been in use since at least 1882.

FULL METAL JACKET - "THIS IS MY RIFLE, THIS IS MY GUN" MARINE CORPS BOOT CAMP SCENE
From the Academy-Award nominated film, Full Metal Jacket, is this scene from the Marine boot camp basic training. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is a real tough act, but he is fair. In this scene, he drills into the recruits the difference between a "rifle" and a "gun." So you will never hear a member of the US Armed Services refer to their rifle as their "gun." They refer to their pistol as their sidearm, but they also do not call their pistol a "gun." So in this scene, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman has them parading up and down the barracks chanting "This is my rifle, this is my gun, this is for fighting, this is for fun." A memorable scene in a movie full of them.

"What an intro. That was intense." | Meet Gunnery Sergeant Hartman | Full Metal Jacket (1987)
R. Lee Ermey 1944-2018
One of the best openings of all time, in my own humble opinion. Hartman is hilarious... until he isn't. You know how in First Blood everyone is cheering for Rambo to shoot up the town and the sheriff and then the mood immediately changes when Rambo breaks down (I think I made a compilation of that scene, you should check it out). I think this scene is very similar... Everyone is laughing until it suddenly isn't funny at all. The change in their expressions as Pyle is choked is striking.

About Full Metal Jacket 4K:
Director Stanley Kubrick rips the skin from the face of war to expose the dehumanizing effect of the military on the people fed to its emotional meat grinder in Full Metal Jacket. Through the eyes of an 18-year-old recruit--from his first days in the seeming hell of Marine Corps boot camp as his superiors try to strip of him his individuality and re-create him as a Marine, to the hell of the 1968 Tet offensive, Kubrick reveals the damage done to the collective human soul by the inhumanity of war. Based on the novel The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford.
