Jack Huston and Arliss Howard on Manhunt: Deadly Games and the cult of Eric Rudolph
Though Eric Rudolph pled guilty to several deadly bombings—including the ones that rocked the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games—he still has quite a cult of criminal personality going for him as he serves life behind bars in a maximum security federal prison. He’s written his memoirs and maintains that he did it to serve as a member of the “Army Of God,” something that experts including the creators of Spectrum’s new bingeable series Manhunt: Deadly Games dispute as total bullshit. The A.V. Club sat down with Jack Huston, who plays Rudolph in the series to talk about his views on the murderer, as well as what he and co-star Arliss Howard would want to say to the much maligned and falsely accused Richard Jewell.

Arliss Howard as John C. Calhoun in Spielberg's "Amistad"
From the 1997 "Amistad" film by Steven Spielberg, wherein Sen. Calhoun of South Carolina crashes a state dinner hosted by U.S. Pres. Van Buren.
I do not own the copyright to this video. Uploaded for educational purposes under "fair use." I hope that posting this piques an interest in the life and works of John C. Calhoun, a philosophic statesman and arguably the greatest American political philosopher since Founders like Jefferson and Adams.
Clyde N. Wilson, professor emeritus of South Carolina and the editor of the Papers of John C. Calhoun, wrote a critical review of this film, an excerpt whereof follows:
"One of Spielberg's assistants called me early on, wanting advice on the characterization of John C. Calhoun, whom I am supposed to know something about. For a moment visions of fa...

The baby T-Rex gets its first kill… at Ludlow's (Arliss Howard) expense.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Just when you'd think that scientists would realize dinosaurs and humans don't mix, along comes The Lost World: Jurassic Park to prove you wrong. In this sequel, John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) summons chaos theorist and onetime colleague Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) to his home with some startling information -- while nearly everything at his Jurassic Park had been destroyed, engineers were also operating a second site, where other dinosaurs, resurrected through DNA cloning technology, had been kept in hiding. Hammond has learned the dinosaurs on the second island are alive and well and even breeding; Hammond wants Malcolm to observe and document the reptiles before Hammond's financiers can get to them. Malcolm declares he had enough of the dinosaurs the first time out, but decides to make the trip when he finds out that his girlfriend, paleontologist Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore), is already there. However, Ian and Sarah aren't the only visitors expected on the island; a camera crew led by ecological activist Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn) is on the way, as is Roland Tembo (Pete Postlethwaite), a world-class wild game hunter who is supposed to round up the dinosaurs and who hopes to bag a prehistoric trophy for himself in the process. This sequel to Jurassic Park boasted even more impressive special effects than the first film, though the acting and screenplay aren't always at the same level.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:

For a moment visions of fat Hollywood fees danced before my eyes. Then, I remembered what Grandmother staid: Stand up straight, look 'em in the eye, and always tell the truth. I had to say, well Calhoun had nothing to do with the Amistad case and nothing to say about it. (The assistant, by the way, identified himself as a South Carolinian. By his speech and the fact that he had a scholarship to Harvard, I assumed he is an African-American. He was very good, almost as slick as a young Strom Thurmond. I would advise him to come home and go into politics.)
"Calhoun is shown in the movie (and the actor who plays him is very good, by the way) as declaiming about slavery and impending civil war in relation to the case. This did not happen and could not have.
"I have since learned were they got it. Like Ken Burns, Spielberg's people have been taken in by the great Boston-o-centric stream of American myth and 'history.' They got the idea of using Calhoun from Samuel F. Bemis' romanticized biography, John Quincy Adams and the Union, as well as the idea that the case was some kind of major event and triumph for Adams. The idea of having Adams, one of the nastiest major figures in American history, portrayed by Anthony Hopkins as a shrew, cuddly old teddy bear, I assume they thought up in Hollywood itself. Get his picture and look at that cold hateful face sometime. I guarantee the next time you have indigestion you will see it in your nightmare as one of the devils tormenting you in Hell. Randolph of Roanoke called him Blifel after the Puritan hypocrite in Tom Jones.
"Bemis claimed that Calhoun introduced resolutions in the Senate on the Amistad case to thwart Adams. He even quoted two of the resolutions, conveniently leaving out the third, which was specific. In fact, Calhoun’s concern at this time was a different question. British officials in the Bahamas were undertaking to free the slaves on American coastal vessels that came by accident into their waters. (It was common for plantation families to move with their slaves from the South Atlantic to the Gulf Coast states by ship.) The British freed any who came into their hands, as a matter of policy. They also executed those guilty of killing, like the Amistad Africans, and later paid indemnity to the U.S., an admission of illegality.
"Adams was at this time a marginalized figure, a failed President who could not even get elected Governor of Massachusetts. Calhoun was much more influential. By falsely setting up Adams as an antagonist to Calhoun at this time, Bemis, and the movie, lend more importance to Adams than is deserved. There is also the question of motivation. It is all a love of liberty on Adams’s part, according to this rendering. (Part of the larger myth that the later brutal conquest of the Southern people by the government to preserve a political and economic empire, something Adams longed for but did not live to see, was entirely explained as a righteous crusade to free the suffering black man.) Adams had become President in an election that was brokered in the House of Representatives under cries of 'corrupt bargain.' He had proceeded to propose grandiose plans of centralization and mercantilism, repudiating everything been taught by Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. He was immediately shot down and destroyed by Southern strict constructionists. He hated what one of his descendants called 'the sable genius of the South' and devoted his last years to attacking it at its weakest point, slavery. It had nothing to do with freedom or with the welfare of people of African origin."
