Located in the southeast corner of Dell Grove Township, Friesland is named after the northern province of the Netherlands. The community was originally called South Junction, as it was at the juncture of the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads. It operated a post office from 1896 to 1917.

Friesland (Dutch pronunciation:[ˈfrislɑnt]; West Frisian:Fryslân[ˈfrislɔ̃ːn]) or Frisia is a province in the northwest of the Netherlands. It is situated west of Groningen, northwest of Drenthe and Overijssel, north of Flevoland, northeast of North Holland, and south of the North Sea. In 2010, the province had a population of 646,000 and a total area of 5,749km2 (2,220sqmi).
The north-western area of the province was once part of the ancient, larger region of Frisia. The official languages of Friesland are West Lauwers Frisian and Dutch.
Name
In 1996 the States of Friesland resolved that the official name of the province should follow the Frisian spelling rather than the Dutch spelling, resulting in "Friesland" being replaced by "Fryslân". In 2004 the Dutch Government confirmed this resolution, putting in place a three-year scheme to oversee the name change and associated cultural programme.
The Frisian region was ruled by local chieftains until the 15th century; see East Frisia for details.
In 1438 in the northern part of today's Landkreis Friesland the Lordship of Jever was founded. East Frisia was from then on regarded as a hostile territory, and lots of skirmishes between Jever and East Frisia took place during the 15th and 16th centuries. The last ruler of Jever was Mary of Jever, who ruled until 1575.
After her death Jever became a part of Oldenburg, but East Frisia made a claim for the territory as well. In the following decades East Frisia tried to block all roads between Jever and Oldenburg. It was not before the 17th century that the hostilities between East Frisia and Oldenburg ended.
Minnesota (i/mɪnᵻˈsoʊtə/; locally[ˌmɪnəˈso̞ɾə]) is a state in the Midwestern United States. Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858, created from the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory. The name comes from the Dakota word for "clear blue water". Owing to its large number of lakes, the state is informally known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". Its official motto is L'Étoile du Nord (French: Star of the North).
Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 21st most populous of the U.S. States; nearly 60 percent of its residents live in the Minneapolis–Saint Paulmetropolitan area (known as the "Twin Cities"), the center of transportation, business, industry, education, and government and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of western prairies now given over to intensive agriculture; deciduous forests in the southeast, now partially cleared, farmed and settled; and the less populated North Woods, used for mining, forestry, and recreation.
Minnesota wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Minnesota is part of the largest American Viticultural Area (AVA), the Upper Mississippi Valley AVA, which includes southwest Wisconsin, southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and northwest Illinois. The state also has a smaller designated American Viticultural Areas, the Alexandria Lakes AVA. Minnesota is a very cold climate for viticulture and many grapevarieties require protection from the winter weather by being buried under soil for the season. Minnesota is home to extensive research on cold-hardy French hybrid and other grape varieties.
The Minnesota Grape Growers Association (MGGA) is a statewide organization that promotes grape growing and wine making in the state and also in cold-hardy climates. Minnesota is home to the International Cold Climate Wine Competition (ICCWC) hosted annually by a partnership between MGGA and University of Minnesota. This is the only wine competition solely dedicated to the promotion of quality wines made mainly from cold-hardy grape varieties. In 2014, the 6th annual competition saw 284 wines entered from 59 commercial wineries in 11 states. Awards were based on blind tastings by 21 expert judges, who include enologists, wine writers, restaurateurs, retailers, and wine educators.
The Minnesota River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, approximately 332 miles (534km) long, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It drains a watershed of nearly 17,000 square miles (44,000km2), 14,751 square miles (38,200km2) in Minnesota and about 2,000sqmi (5,200km2) in South Dakota and Iowa.
It rises in southwestern Minnesota, in Big Stone Lake on the Minnesota–South Dakota border just south of the Laurentian Divide at the Traverse Gap portage. It flows southeast to Mankato, then turns northeast. It joins the Mississippi south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, near the historic Fort Snelling. The valley is one of several distinct regions of Minnesota. Of Dakota language origin, the name Minnesota means "sky-tinted water or cloudy-sky water", from mní (often transcribed as "minne" or "mini") meaning "water" and sóta meaning "sky-tinted" or "cloudy sky", and, refers to the milky-brown color its waters take on when at flood stage. An illustration of the meaning of these words was shown by dropping a little milk into water. For over a century prior to the organization of the Minnesota Territory in 1849, the name St. Pierre (St. Peter) had been generally applied to the river by French and English explorers and writers. Minnesota River is shown on the 1757 edition of Mitchell Map as "Ouadebameniſsouté [Watpá Mnísota] or R. St. Peter". On June 19, 1852, acting upon a request from the Minnesota territorial legislature, the United States Congress decreed the aboriginal name for the river, Minnesota, to be the river’s official name and ordered all agencies of the federal government to use that name when referencing it.
The Netherlands has 12 provinces, and today we are visiting Friesland, one of the most northern provinces.
While we’ve lived in the Netherlands for over 5 years, it’s rare that we are tourists in our home country. Although in Friesland it almost felt like we were in a different country, because they speak a completely different language: Frisian! It’s closer to Old English than to Dutch.
We explore Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland, Natural Parks and the Wadden Sea!

The History of Friesland / Fryslân / Frisia
The Dutch province of Friesland has a rich history. The history of Friesland goes back to the Frisii who lived during the time of the Romans. The Frisii culture declined to make way for the Frisians. They eventually founded the Kingdom of Frisia (Magna Frisia). From that moment the history of Frisia began. The Frisian Kingdom contained large parts that are today part of the Netherlands. Therefore the history of Friesland is part of the history of the Netherlands. Dutch history has been influenced by the Frisians. Also by the Vikings. The Vikings arrived in the Netherlands when a power vacuum was created because of the crumbling of the Frankish Empire (Francia or the Carolingian Empire). In Frisia Vikings raided and traded. The Viking Rorik of Dorestad settled as well. This made the Vikings...

This made the Vikings in the Netherlands also colonizers. Later Friesland would be taken over by the County of Holland. In 1588 Friesland was one of the founding members of the Dutch Republic. After the Batavian Revolution Friesland would be incorporated into the Batavian Republic; the Kingdom of Holland; the First French Empire and then the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Friesland is a unique province of the Netherlands with its own flag, culture and Frisian language.

Greg Shapiro explains in a few minutes why your next business meeting or event should take place in this beautiful, versatile and green province.
Located in the southeast corner of Dell Grove Township, Friesland is named after the northern province of the Netherlands. The community was originally called South Junction, as it was at the juncture of the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads. It operated a post office from 1896 to 1917.
