Victorian Pseudosciences: Brain Personality Maps
in 19th-century England, scientists were figuring out that certain parts of our brains were connected with certain parts of our bodies- but they came up with some terrible and misleading ideas that spread without rigorous scientific backing.

A Brief History of Phrenology
Phrenology is the belief that different parts of your brain control different aspects of your personality, and these personality traits can be measured by looking at the bumps on specific parts of the skull.
It was developed by Franz Joseph Gall and was popular in Europe and America during the early 1800s

Franz Joseph Gall, (1758-1828), anatomista e fisiologista alemão, foi o primeiro cientista a atribuir funções cerebrais específicas a diferentes áreas do cérebro.

It was a dark and stormy night, like any other in the big city. I was on my lunch break when the mutton-chopped Methusalah came through my door in a hurry. He said “I like my historians like I like my eggs. Hard-boiled.” “Then you’ve come to the right place.” He said “There’s about to be a murder, the people need to know the truth!” I said “Well that’s a cute bit, but what am I, a low-budget YouTube film critic from 10 years ago? I can’t commit a whole episode to-” but he was already gone.
Two years later, Austria-Hungary turns up on the curb. Open and shut case, the cops say. A suicide. Too many nations under one empire, army was preoccupied with losing a w...

Austria's Last Imperial Family
Charles I and his wife Zita of Bourbon Parma were the last Emperor and Empress of Austria and King and Queen of Hungary. Charles ascended to the throne in 1916 in the midst of the first World War after the death of his grand uncle, Franz Joseph. A chain of events made Charles directly in line to the throne: Franz Joseph’s only son and heir: Rudolph committed suicide in 1889. Franz Joseph’s next younger brother Maximilian was already dead at that point. His third brother Karl Ludwig died in 1896, leaving his son Franz Ferdinand directly in line to the throne. As Franz Ferdinand married, as it was declared, morganatically, his children were not eligible to inherit the throne. It therefore became clear that Franz Ferdinand’s younger brother, Archduke Otto most likely would succeed his brother...

Enjoying the Netflix romantic drama "The Empress"? Check out the real story of Empress Elisabeth "Sisi" of Austria.
Elisabeth of Austria was a shy woman who’s beauty won the heart of Emperor Franz Joseph. She suffered under heavy expectations and a frankly evil mother in law. She was forced into a limelight she never wanted and into the path of an assassin.
This video is part of my 20 episode series profiling the most fascinating Queens of Europe.

A suicide. Too many nations under one empire, army was preoccupied with losing a war and he erupted from the inside. Something didn’t seem right. Austria-Hungary was hardly the only ethnically diverse country in the world, and a 600-year-old monarchy doesn’t splatter itself on the pavement for any old war. And look at the remains… Czechoslovakia. The kingdom of Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes? If it was only nationalism killed the beast, then why were so many of the successor states just as multinational? Then I remembered the old man. And I knew I had to get to the bottom of this.

It therefore became clear that Franz Ferdinand’s younger brother, Archduke Otto most likely would succeed his brother. But Otto died in 1906 aged only 41 leaving his elder son Charles as his heir.

This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers the birth, rise, stagnation and swift fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Beginning with the 1848 Revolutions through the 1867 compromise this episode will take a look at the political and social issues the empire had. It covers the reign of Ferdinand, Franz Joseph and Karl I (Charles I) and how the empire launched the First World War which would ultimately be its downfall. The episode finishes by cover the treaties which were signed after the war and carved up the empire into the nations of eastern and central Europe.
Ten Minute History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
Recommended books:
A Concise History of Austria - Steven Beller. A fantastic book which covers all of Austrian History whilst pointing out the relevant parts of Hungarian history, too.
The Last Years of Austria-Hungary - Mark Cornwall.
