French Mandate of Syria and Lebanon: Part I (MENA 53)
This presentation will follow Episode 39 (Ottoman Levant) and the Palestinian Campaign of World War I discussed in Episode 46 (World War I, Part II) and demonstrate how Lebanon and Syria entered the Interwar period and interacted with the French. We will discuss the physical conflict between the Arabs and the French and the ideological conflicts between Arab Nationalism, Muslim Modernism, and Traditional Sensibilities in the region. These issues will be compounded by the religious diversity of Lebanon (Maronite Catholics, Other Christians, Sunni Muslims, Druze, Alawites, and increasingly Shiite Muslims). Guest Presenter Marc Witham will additionally discuss (1) the historic French-Maronite Relationship and (2) the British Interventions in French Syria, especially during World War II.

Watch The Great War on Nebula: https://go.nebula.tv/the-great-war
100 years ago at the conference of San Remo, one thing became clear: Great Britain and France wanted control over the Middle East. Justified by the fighting in the previous years and painted as "liberators" of the Middle Eastern minorities, the new map of the Middle East emerged - under the cover of the League of Nations Mandate system.

French Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon
Officially, the Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon,, was a League of Nations mandate founded after the First World War and the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire.
During the two years that followed the end of the war in 1918 – and in accordance with the Sykes-Picot Agreement that was signed between Britain and France during the war – the British held control of most Ottoman Mesopotamia and the southern part of the Ottoman Syria, while the French controlled the rest of Ottoman Syria and other portions of southeastern Turkey. In early 1920s, the British and French control of these territories became formalized by the League of Nations' mandate system, and France was assigned the League of Nations mandate of Syria on 29 September 1923, which included the territory of present day Lebanon and Al...

France sent thousands of troops from Morocco and Senegal, leading the French to regain many cities, although resistance lasted until the spring of 1927. The French sentenced Sultan al-Atrash to death, but he had escaped with the rebels to Transjordan and was eventually pardoned. He returned to Syria in 1937 after the signing of the Syrian-French Treaty.
Syria and France negotiated a treaty of independence in September 1936, and Hashim al-Atassi was the first president to be elected under the first incarnation of the modern republic of Syria. However, the treaty never came into force because the French Legislature refused to ratify it. With the fall of France in 1940 during World War II, Syria came under the control of Vichy France until the British and Free French occupied the country in the Syria-Lebanon campaign in July 1941. Continuing pressure from Syrian nationalists and the British forced the French to evacuate their troops in April 1946, leaving the country in the hands of a republican government that had been formed during the mandate.

In early 1920s, the British and French control of these territories became formalized by the League of Nations' mandate system, and France was assigned the League of Nations mandate of Syria on 29 September 1923, which included the territory of present day Lebanon and Alexandretta in addition to Syria proper.
