The Salafi movement or Salafist movement is an ultra-conservative reform movement within Sunni Islam that references the doctrine known as Salafism. The doctrine can be summed up as taking "a fundamentalist approach to Islam, emulating the Prophet Muhammad and his earliest followers—al-salaf al-salih, the 'pious forefathers'...They reject religious innovation, or bida, and support the implementation of sharia (Islamic law)." The movement is often divided into three categories: the largest group are the purists (or quietists), who avoid politics; the second largest group are the activists, who get involved in politics; the smallest group are the jihadists, who form a small (yet infamous) minority.
The Salafi movement is often described as being synonymous with Wahhabism, but Salafists consider the term "Wahhabi" derogatory. At other times, Salafism has been described as a hybrid of Wahhabism and other post-1960s movements. Salafism has become associated with literalist, strict and puritanical approaches to Islam and–particularly in the West–with the Salafi jihadists, who espouse offensive jihad as a legitimate expression of Islam against those they deem to be enemies of Islam.
In this episode, we explore the history and key features of the movement known as Salafism, which has become a significant force in modern Islam.

What is Salafism & Wahhabism? | Dr. Shabir Ally & Dr. Safiyyah Ally
Question: "As a Sunni Muslim, I've always learned that Sunnis have four branches: Hanafi, Hanbali, Shafi'i and Maliki. Where does Wahhabism and Salafism come from, and are they actually part of Sunni Islam or recognized by the Hanafi, Hanbali, Shafi'i and Maliki schools to be part of Sunni Islam? What is the Aqeedah of Wahhabism and Salafism?" Most Muslims in a way look back to the earliest generations as people to follow. But Wahhabism and Salafism developed as movements, and Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally discusses their defining features, including their emphasis on the authenticity of hadith and the emergence of bid'ah. I hear a voice say "Don't be so blind" It's telling me all these things That you would probably hide Am I your one and only desire? Am I the reason you breathe Or am I the reason you cry? Always, always, always Always, always, always I just can't live without you I love you, I hate you I can't get around you I breathe you, I taste you I can't live without you I just can't take anymore This life of solitude I guess that I'm out the door And now I'm done with you I feel like you don't want me around I guess I'll pack all my things I guess I'll see you around It's all been bottled up until now As I walk out your door All I can hear is the sound of Always, always, always Always, always, always I just can't live without you I love you, I hate you I can't get around you I breathe you, I taste you I can't live without you I just can't take anymore This life of solitude I guess that I'm out the door And now I'm done with you I love you, I hate you I can't live without you I left my head around your heart Why would you tear my world apart? Always, always, always, always I see the blood all over your hands Does it make you feel more like a man? Was it all just a part of your plan? The pistol's shakin' in my hands And all I hear is the sound I love you, I hate you I can't live without you I breathe you, I taste you I can't live without you I just can't take anymore This life of solitude I guess that I'm out the door And now I'm done with you I love you, I hate you I can't live without you I love you, I hate you I can't live without you I just can't take anymore This life of solitude I pick myself off the floor And now I'm done with you Always, always, always
