Prussia's First King | Frederick I, King IN Prussia (1688-1713) | HoP #8
Last week we have seen the Great Elector’s 48-year reign. It was marked by war and struggle, but it ensured the future generations of House Hohenzollern of one very important certainty: sovereignty over Ducal Prussia. This week his son, Frederick III, makes work of the potential bestowed upon him. After succeeding his father as elector of Brandenburg in 1688, he embarked on a painstaking process of diplomacy and negotiations. Eventually, his efforts would be rewarded with the first royal title of the Hohenzollern family. Through diplomacy, he had achieved what his father, quite literally, fought towards all his life. Frederick III would become known as the first King in Prussia. Welcome to the complete History of Prussia.

The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa
Barbarossa was one of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. He was neither a conqueror, a liberator, nor a reformer. Nevertheless, his name has become legendary over time. What was so special about him?

History's Worst Dad | Prussia's Soldier King and Frederick the Great
Welcome to House of History. In a study of the relationship between Frederick William, ‘the Soldier King, and his son Frederick the Great’, it is written that the dominant attitude of Frederick’s father moulded “the once effeminate and gaily frivolous young Crown Prince into the most feared and respected monarch of his day.” I believe this is spot-on, and after this video you hopefully will as well. Their relationship is an incredibly tragic story of a gifted, young boy that suffered tremendously at the hands of his military father in the war that was waged with immense emotional and psychological intensity between the two. Welcome to the complete history of Prussia.

This is the second Frederick the second I’ve talked about on this channel, ain’t that neat? Frederick II of Prussia was the son of Frederick William of Prussia and the grandson of George I of England on his mom’s side, ooh I am just full of trivia. Now Frederick’s parents had some pretty different opinions about parenting. When his mother learned that her eldest daughter was being physically beaten by her tutor everyday, uh, she hired a different tutor. Frederick’s father… preferred to do the beating himself. But despite his troubled upbringing, Frederick would go on to become a progressive leader and one of the 18th century's greatest generals.
Music (in order of appearance):
Grieg - Nocturne Op. 54 no. 4
Mozart - Sonata for Harpsichord Four Hands in C Major, K19 I. Allegro
Kevin Macleod - Hidden Past
Beethoven - Piano Concerto no. 3 II. Largo
2Unlimited - Jump for Joy (karaoke)
Queen - Don't Stop me Now (Sangah Noona Jazz cover)
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor - Symphony in A Minor II. Lament
Johan Strauss Sr. - Radetzky March
Offenbach - Gallop Infernal (aka The Can Can)

Now, in order to understand how an Elector of the Holy Roman Empire would be able to crown himself King, we have to go back to the Treaty of Westphalia, by this point signed half a century ago. The conditions of the treaty that ended the Thirty Years’ War curtailed, if not destroyed, the power of the Holy Roman Emperor. The prestige of the office had eroded. German princes virtually became sovereigns of their own estates and they certainly felt like it. Yet it was forbidden for anyone to hold the title of King within the Empire - the Empire and Emperor still existed and it would be an unwise provocation that would certainly warrant a military response if an Elector suddenly crowned himself king within the empire. As a matter of fact, it was not until Napoleonic times, a century later, that the Kings of Bavaria, Saxony and Württemberg came into existence, and their ascension to the throne signalled the real end of Empire. During this time, within the Holy Roman empire only two royal titles were permitted: that of King of the Romans (held by the Emperor) and King of Bohemia.
But some Electors of the Empire were Kings… of territories outside of the empire. They made use of a loophole, so to say. Royal crowns of foreign territories were acquired in order to boost the prestige of a House. For example, Augustus II “the Strong” of House Wettin was Elector of Saxony but became King of Poland in 1697 when he was elected as such.

Frederick, Crown Prince of Brandenburg-Prussia will become a warrior king and an enlightened monarch that the likes of Prussia has never seen. His climb to power would be great but his childhood was not so easy. He would live with mistrust and violence at his heels. With relentless bullying from his own flesh and blood.

How Did Prussia Become a Great Power? | Frederick the Great & Enlightened Despotism
From humble beginnings, the Kingdom of Prussia came to be synonymous with military might. Voltaire called it "the army with a state." Prussia's rise began with the union of Brandenburg and Ducal Prussia in 1618, but it didn't become a Great Power until over a century later. Under Frederick the Great, Prussia ballooned in size, but far from being a common warlord, 'Der alte Fritz' was a man of the Enlightenment who brought Prussia into the modern age.

Frederick William I, the father of Frederick the Great, did a lot to set the stage for Prussia's rise to great power status. However, he was also a severe, overbearing, violent, and obsessive lunatic. This is his story.

From humble beginnings, the Kingdom of Prussia came to be synonymous with military might. Voltaire called it "the army with a state." Prussia's rise began with the union of Brandenburg and Ducal Prussia in 1618, but it didn't become a Great Power until over a century later. Under Frederick the Great, Prussia ballooned in size, but far from being a common warlord, 'Der alte Fritz' was a man of the Enlightenment who brought Prussia into the modern age.
