GeneralFrederic Augustus Thesiger, 2nd Baron ChelmsfordGCB,GCVO (31 May 1827–9 April 1905) was a British Army officer best known for his commanding role during the Anglo-Zulu war. The centre column of his forces was defeated at the 1879 Battle of Isandlwana, an unanticipated victory for the Zulu and the British Army's worst ever defeat from a technologically inferior indigenous force. He would avenge his defeat at the Battle of Ulundi in the same year, which ended the Zulu campaign.
He wished to pursue a military career, and after unsuccessfully trying to obtain a place in the Grenadier Guards, he purchased (1844) a commission in the Rifle Brigade. He served (1845) with the Rifles in Halifax, Nova Scotia before purchasing an exchange (November 1845) into the Grenadiers as Ensign and Lieutenant. He was promoted Lieutenant and Captain in 1850, and became aide-de-camp (1852) to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Lord Eglinton, and then to the Commander-in-Chief in Ireland, Sir Edward Blakeney, from 1853 to 1854.
Several other members of the Thesiger family have also gained distinction. Sir Frederic Thesiger (d. 1805), uncle of the first Baron, was a Captain in the Royal Navy and served as Aide-de-Camp to Lord Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. The Hon. Charles Wemyss Thesiger (1831–1903), second son of the first Baron, was a Lieutenant-General in the Army. His eldest son George Thesiger was a temporary Major-General in the Army and was killed in the First World War. His son Sir Gerald Thesiger was a Judge of the High Court of Justice. The Hon. Alfred Thesiger, third son of the first Baron, was a Lord Justice of Appeal. The Hon. Sir Edward Pierson Thesiger (1842–1928), fourth son of the first Baron, was Clerk-Assistant to Parliament from 1890 to 1917. His second son Sir Bertram Sackville Thesiger (1875–1966) was a naval commander and served as Commander-in-Chief of the East Indies Station between 1927 and 1929 while his third son Ernest Thesiger was an actor. The Hon. Wilfred Gilbert Thesiger (1871–1920), third son of the second Baron, was Consul-General and Minister Plenipotentiary to Addis Abeba. His eldest son Sir Wilfred Thesiger was an explorer and travel writer. The Hon. Eric Thesiger, fourth son of the second Baron, was a soldier and courtier.
Chelmsford (/ˈtʃɛlmzfəd/) is the principal settlement of the City of Chelmsford and the county town of Essex, in the East of England. It is located in the London commuter belt, approximately 32 miles (51km) northeast of Charing Cross, London, and approximately 22 miles (35km) from Colchester. The urban area of the city has a population of approximately 110,000, whilst the district has a population of 168,310.
Chelmsford's population consists of a large number of City and Docklands commuters, attracted by the 30–35 minute journey from Central London via the Great Eastern Main Line. The same journey takes approximately 60 minutes by road via the A12.
Chelmsford Prison began as a county jail in 1830 before transforming into a Category B prison, a young person's prison, and a local prison. It was expanded in 1996.
In 1999 the management at Chelmsford Prison were severely criticised by the Chief Inspector of Prisons, after findings that staff were failing to respond to cell alarms five years after a prisoner was beaten to death by his cell-mate. The prison was also criticised for unacceptably bad conditions of cleanliness. A further inspection a year later confirmed these failings at the prison. In 2002, "conditions at Chelmsford...[were] condemned as 'poor and cramped' by the gaol's board of visitors."
However, in 2005, Chelmsford was praised in its inspection for improving standards and procedures for inmates at the prison. This was confirmed a year later by the Independent Monitoring Board which praised the new management at the prison.
The current district was formed on 1 April 1974 from the borough of Chelmsford, and most of the Chelmsford Rural District.
Chelmsford City Council
The mayor of the city is Councillor Paul Hutchinson and is the first citizen of the borough and an ambassador for Chelmsford. A cabinet of ten councillors, from the 57 that constitute the council, are led by Cllr Roy Whitehead.Local elections are held every four years in the borough. After being under Liberal Democrat control between 1995 and 1999, the council moved to no overall control before coming the Conservative party gained a majority at the 2003 elections.

A Zulu Dawn: The Curious Case of Lord Chelmsford's Medals
In this video we uncover the real life medals awarded to Lord Chelmsford, the British commander of the Anglo-Zulu War, and discover if they were portrayed accurately in the hit movie Zulu Dawn.
We chronicle the 2nd Baron Chelmsford Frederic Thesiger's life and campaigns prior to him taking command of the British Invasion of Zululand leading to the disaster at Isandlwana. These include the Crimean War, the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the British expedition to rescue hostages in Abyssinia in 1867.
We also cover some controversial comments made by Sir Garnet Wolseley about Lord Chelmsford at the time.
