Frascati (pronounced[fɾaˈskaːti]) is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Rome in the Lazio region of central Italy. It is located 20 kilometres (12mi) south-east of Rome, on the Alban Hills close to the ancient city of Tusculum. Frascati is closely associated with science, being the location of several international scientific laboratories.
The most important archeological finding in the area, dating back to Ancient Roman times, during the late Republican Age, is a patrician Roman villa probably belonging to Lucullus. In the first century AD its owner was Gaius Sallustius Crispus Passienus, who married Agrippina the Younger, mother of Nero. His properties were later confiscated by the Flavian imperial dynasty (69–96 AD). Consul Flavius Clemens lived in the villa with his wife Domitilla during the rule of Domitian.
According to the Liber Pontificalis, in the 9th century Frascati was a little village, probably founded two centuries earlier. The name of the city probably comes from a typical local tradition of collecting firewood ("frasche" in Italian)—many place-names around the town refer to trees or wood. After the destruction of nearby Tusculum in 1191, the town's population increased and the bishopric moved from Tusculum to Frascati. Pope Innocent III endorsed the city as a feudal possession of the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, but in the following centuries its territories were ravaged by frequent raids that impoverished it. It was owned by various baronial families, including the Colonna, until, in 1460, Pope Pius II fortified the city with walls.
Frascati was built between 1821 and 1823 for Philip Pendleton Barbour, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and statesman. Barbour's father, Thomas Barbour arrived in Orange County as a young man from Culpeper County. In 1806, Thomas Barbour and his wife, Mary, sold their home tract of 885 acres (3.58km2) to their son, Philip. Barbour entered into his "Articles of Agreement" with master builder John M. Perry on 7 November 1821. Barbour was familiar with Perry's capabilities through his work at the University of Virginia and was attracted to Somerset, the home of his neighbor, Thomas Macon. Like Somerset, Frascati was influenced by the more conventional, central hall Federal house style. This conventional format contrasted with the tastes of Barbour's brother, Senator James Barbour of Barboursville. Barboursville was designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1822 and displayed Jefferson's mixing of French and Palladian forms similar to that at Monticello.
Frascati is an Italianwhite wine from the region of Frascati, (name of the town 25km from Rome) in Lazio, Italy. Archeological discoveries from the ancient town of Tusculum, now Frascati, demonstrate the cultivation of grapes for wine since the 5th century B.C. it was one of the preferred wines of Ancient Rome, then of the Renaissance Popes, (Caravaggio would have drunk Frascati wine in his favorite Hostaria), Poets and artists visiting on the Grand Tour 1700s and 1800s, and in the 1960s of the Dolce Vitaх. If there is a wine that is synonymous with Rome, it is Frascati. Made from Malvasia di Candia, Malvasia del Lazio, Grechetto, Bombino bianco and Trebbiano grapes and has Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) and since 2013 DOCG status. The Frascati DOC/DOCG area is located in the heart of the Castelli Romani, Tuscolum and Albani Hills south of Rome, and north of Lake Albano. The vineyards range from 200 to 1,000 feet in altitude. The soils are well drained and volcanic. The DOC allows for a minimum of 70% Malvasia (Bianca di Candia) and/or Trebbiano (Toscano), a 30% maximum of Greco and/or Malvasia (del Lazio) and a maximum of 10% other white grapes. Many of the vineyards' cellars have ancient Roman caves. The Frascati wine consortium was founded in 1949, DOC status obtained in 1966, making it one of Italy's first DOC wines. Modern cellars and techniques are now leading the way to an ever growing reputation of a good quality wine, with many award winning labels. Frascati wine is an ingredient in the Frascati Frizz aperitif.

Not every day goes according to plan when traveling independently. We missed out on a few things we hoped for during this day in Frascati and Castel Gandolfo, but the views of the spectacular Lake Albano made the day beautiful regardless.

Places to see in ( Frascati - Italy )
Frascati, in Lazio at a short distance from Rome, is a popular daytrip destination from the capital. Frascati is one of several attractive historic hilltowns to the south-east of Rome known collectively as the Castelli Romani. Every weekend these towns, and Frascati in particular, fill up with Romans looking for a change of pace, clean air, good food and wine. Often groups of Romans will drive here just for the evening, dining at one of the many informal restaurants which serve rich regional specialities and the local white wine.
The air is noticeably fresher than in the city, and in the sweltering summer months it has always been a popular resort. The wealthy built villas here, many of which are still standing although they're not open to the public. The most impressive is the Villa Aldobrandini, designed by Giacomo Della Porta for the nephew of a pope. This palace dominates the town, hovering above the central piazza in faded splendour. The gardens are open to the public and are free to visit - you just need to collect a permit from the tourist office first. On a weekday the grounds may be completely empty, and you can explore the terraces in solitary state. A gigantic water feature (no longer functioning), sculptures and architectural follies dominate the gardens behind the Villa, and you can climb up beside the crumbling cascade and imagine the estate in its glittering heyday.
The Villa Torlonia, nearby, was destroyed in the war. Nowadays it is a public park, where office workers jog in their lunch hour. You can still admire the gardens, and an impressive fountain, the Teatro delle acque (water theatre), designed by Carlo Maderno. The cathedral is worth a look, as are some of Frascati's other churches. There's no tourist circuit of important sights in Frascati. The chief appeal of an excursion is the relaxing ambience, fine feasting, and wandering around the evocative medieval streets and the faded grandeur of the aristocratic past.
Frascati is 13 miles (21km) from Rome, and is easily reachable by public transport. COTRAL buses run frequently from Anagnina metro station (remember to buy your tickets in advance from the kiosk at Anagnina, and to validate them when you get on the bus). For more information about COTRAl buses, see the Lazio transport page. There is also a local train service from Rome, which leaves from Stazione Termini.
The Frascati tourist information office is situated on the main square, Piazza Marconi. This is where the buses from (and to) Rome stop. There is also a panoramic terrace and a gelateria close at hand, so it's a good place to sit down and get your bearings when you arrive. Both the tourist office and the gardens of Villa Aldobrandini are closed for a couple of hours at lunchtime.

**Some History**
The area around Frascati and Tusculum have been famed since roman times for their majestic villas, built by roman elite during the roman republic and roman empire. The ruins of the Flavii family villas and of Lucullus have been discovered in this area.
This tradition has continued to more recent times, as the most distinguished families connected with the papal nobility built their own villas in this area, thanks to its closeness to Rome and for the healthy weather conditions found here. A grand total of 12 majestic villas are still here, some visible, some converted to museums or to hotels.
Frascati is also a renowned winery are as well.
The virtual walk starts just in the north-eastern part of the old town and heads over to the main square, to then continue along a panorama view towards Rome, to the main square showing the Villa Aldobrandini , then to the old park of the Villa and back to the promenade.

Frascati has the best Porchetta Sandwich for just 3 euros. Frascati is one the the perfect day trips from Rome and takes just 30 minuted by train from the Termini train station. Frascati is part of the Castelli Romani region of Rome and makes a great base for exploring other nearby cities. Frascati is known for its wine and porchetta and I had the best porchetta sandwich there. The people were friendly and warm. I walk the street, talk to people and eat some great food.

Not every day goes according to plan when traveling independently. We missed out on a few things we hoped for during this day in Frascati and Castel Gandolfo, but the views of the spectacular Lake Albano made the day beautiful regardless.

Dark is the sky inside your mind You can't meet him, you wanna hide Perhaps one more try Are you brave enough to fight? Vorsicht! When you face your sinister fiend Vorsicht! When you blame your demon within Loneliness makes you need a friend Then you remember he's always there Gas for your lethal pire Lock your closet and make yourself alive Vorsicht! When you blame your sinister fiend Vorsicht! When you're face to face with him Oh, you got it all so wrong Like children crying when they are alone You kept your fears and you lost the game He gets your soul either way
