Frank Butler (February 18, 1928– July 24, 1984) was an Americanjazz drummer. Butler was born in Kansas City, Missouri, but later moved west and was associated in large part with the West Coast school. He never became well known but was highly regarded by fellow musicians and performed with jazz notables like Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Art Pepper in the 1950s and 1960s. In the mid-to-late 1950s, he was a member of the Curtis Counce Quintet. Sidelined for many years by an addiction to heroin, he did not record an album under his own name until the 1970s.

Frank Butler - Drums
Teddy Edwards, Joe Farrell - Tenor Saxophone
Dolo Coker - Piano
Monty Budwig - Bass

Frank Butler's second and last recording as a leader followed his first by just under one year. He retains the same rhythm section as on The Stepper (Dolo Coker and Monty Budwig), while featuring two tenor saxophonists, Joe Farrell and Teddy Edwards, this time around. Missing are the longer drum solos of the earlier album; instead the focus is primarily on the two saxes.

Who is FRANK BUTLER? #1 of the " SPOTLIGHT " series
Today we are starting the " SPOTLIGHT " series where we feature overlooked drummers and transpose some of their playing. I write out and play what I think he is doing .... We know who the top drummers are and how great they play. But what about what I call the ( 2nd tier) drummers who were somewhat left behind and really didn't get the recognition they deserved? Well today we take a look at one of the greats, who for whatever reason, never got his rightful place in history, be it for drugs, mental illness, personal reasons etc.
