Frances Fitzgerald, "The Evangelicals"
http://www.politics-prose.com/book/9781439131336
Fitzgerald made her name with her now classic Fire in the Lake, which won both the Pulitzer and the National Book Award and is still considered one of the best accounts of the Vietnam War. Her sixth book chronicles the social and political roles of Evangelicals in America. Now constituting twenty-five percent of the American population, Evangelicals have helped shape the country since the Puritans, though they became a dominant force only with the Great Awakenings of the nineteenth century. A populist rebellion centered in revivals, the movement split along North-South lines with the Civil War, then into modernist-fundamentalist factions. Preachers like Billy Graham worked to unite the groups, but the turbulent 1960s divided them further.

Frances FitzGerald: Evangelicals and Trump's Republican Party
Why white evangelicals voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump has been a subject of discussion both within and outside the evangelical community—particularly since most evangelical leaders were as surprised as anyone else at his victory. In this talk, Pulitzer-winning author Frances FitzGerald explains that evangelicals put aside considerations of Trump’s morality and character not only to achieve goals they have been fighting for over three decades, such as restricting abortion, but also, for the most part, because they support Trump on immigration, the environment, and reducing social services.

Frances Fitzgerald is a Fine Gael TD (Teachta Dála) for the constituency of Dublin Mid -West and a parliamentarian for over 20 years.
Frances served as Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise and Innovation from 14 June 2017 - November 2017. She previously served as Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality from May 2016 - June 2017; Minister for Justice and Equality from May 2014 – May 2016; and Minister for Children and Youth Affairs from March 2011 - May 2014.
Between 2007 and 2011 Frances served as Leader of the Opposition in the Irish Senate; having previously served as a TD for ten years before that. In opposition she served in six different portfolios including Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Defence, Social Community and Family Affairs, Equality and Family Affairs, and Social Welfare. She served as Spokesperson on Health and Children while in the Senate.
Frances gained a B. Soc. Science in University College Dublin and an M. SC. in Social Administration and Social Work in the London School of Economics.
Frances entered politics as a campaigner on social issues immediately after her tenure as chairperson of the National Women’s Council (1988-1992). As Chair of the National Women’s Council she initiated and served on the second Commission on Women, chairing the Employment Sub-Committee. She held the first conference on Women and Decision Making and championed the cause of introducing equality proofing mechanisms. Frances also led a number of high profile health campaigns. She has served on the boards of the Employment Equality Agency, Arthritis Ireland, The O’Reilly Theatre and the Breast Research Unit in St. Vincent’s Hospital. Frances was also Vice Chair of Europa Donna, the European breast cancer campaign.
Frances trained as a social worker and family therapist. She worked in the Mater Hospital, St James’ Hospital and Ballymun Child and Family Centre for ten years. She also worked in inner city communities in London and Dublin. She specialised in family-work including adoption and fostering. She also lectured in social work in Adult Education Courses and in Trinity College, Dublin.
Introducing legislation for the Marriage Equality referendum ranks as one of the proudest moments in Frances political career. On 23rd May 2015, Ireland became the first country in the world to introduce same sex marriage by way of popular vote.
She also pioneered the Children and Family Relationship Act, the biggest reform of child and family law for a generation.
As Ireland's first senior Minister for Children and Youth Affairs 2011-2014, Frances pioneered a number of groundbreaking reforms, including the comprehensive reform of the child protection and welfare system in Ireland. She oversaw the successful Children’s Referendum in 2012 to strengthen the protection and rights of children and to ensure equality for all children irrespective of their parent’s marital status.
She established Tusla, a dedicated Child and Family Agency and introduced the Children First Legislation, putting the guidelines on a statutory footing. She also led other major improvements on the promotion, regulation and enforcement of standards in early years and childcare settings.
Frances lists John Hume as her political hero. She is married to Michael and has three sons.

Frances Fitzgerald was 26 when she got the guts to go to Vietnam and cover the war as a freelance reporter.
Her Radcliffe education, where she studied Middle Eastern history, didn't really prepare her for understanding this war. But two years spent writing for the Sunday magazine of the Herald Tribune at least gave her some idea about magazine writing.
With that under her belt, off she went.
As an outsider, and a woman, she wasn't taken seriously at first but this allowed her to some degree of freedom since the US military thought she was harmless.
Her book about the war, Fire in Lake, won a Pulitzer Prize. She went on to cover other conflicts and countries including in Iran and Central America.
She believed that the US Military was off base because they thought Vietnam was about a war of ideology. A grand struggle between Western Democracy and Communism. When in fact it was a local war about nationalism. No matter what it was about the US Military believed its vast arsenal and power would defeat the local guerillas. They couldn't think that anyone could defeat them.
